I get asked a lot about what insulated Jacket I prefer to use while hiking. Well, I own quite a few synthetic and down jackets. In this video we go through my 6 favourite jackets and I tell you which one I would prefer If I could only pick one. It’s gear day! And today we’re looking at insulated jackets!

+1 for the Arc Nuclei FL. So warm and light. It stops the wind better than anything else I have tried. I have a bunch of Arc stuff all purchased used for 50% off retail or less.

@@mowsertas I never buy retail, I just buy everything used. Geartrader, various forums where people list used gear, local store that sells used gear....Maybe once a year Arctery will send me a coupon for their regear(used) online store.

Really interesting to hear your experience with down v synthetic. Good info. Funny I'm a down person but i guess we all base things on our environment and likes. Ps these reviews really help people make informed choices without wasting money.

Glad to hear the vids are a help! Comments like that make producting them all the more worthwhile! If I lived in a drier climate (more snow, less rain) I would definately prefer to use down. I love my down jacket but for hiking in Tassie it's just too impractical. When I'm not on a multi day walk though, I find I wear my down all the time. Actually just considering a new down jacket from Norrona. Stay tuned!

You reported Arcteryx is a Summer jacket but here in QLD there is no such thing! Love your reviews Mowser, I’m heading on the Western Arthurs traverse in December and religiously watching your videos on it. So glad you put out this content when you did

Great video mate. I have an Enlightened Equipment Torrid pullover. Too hot to walk in but great for at rest or camp. If it's cold while I'm walking I wear a fleece. Love a good fleece for active layering.

@@mowsertas It's very light and packable, quite warm, but not something you can bushbash with since the outer shell is so thin. I dare say if you already own Arcteryx you probably wouldn't need it 😁

I have most of the same jackets and the SV synthetic - all simple, brilliant, functional design and surprisingly durable. All purchased at least 20% off - some I left in the basket and didn’t check out so they kindly emailed me the saved basket the next day with another 10% off. The Nuclei FL is warmer than it should be and hands down my favourite jacket for 3 seasons. It has an ethereal, almost not there comfort. For Tassie and wet Alps trips I layer a 50F synthetic quilt over a down quilt or bag - I’ve found I can push condensation to the over quilt and dry it the next day in 10 mins of breeze.
@mowsertas
@mowsertas Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Leaving in the basket is also a ploy I occasionally try with Wild Earth! Great to hear you also like the Nuclei. Unbelievable how functional and warm it is! I am liking that idea of the synthetic quilt - will investigate that for sure!

My main gripe with RAB is that the collars on their jackets are too high/tight. Plus I feel like arcteryx just have slightly better construction quality/materials. I love rabs kinetic waterproof trousers but the colour options are super limited. For arcteryx the shoes are hit and miss and they have the same problem as Rab with limited colour ways and also low stock on a lot of their products.

Cheers for the content Mowser. I’ve recently become interested in the Tassie walls and the Te Araroa in NZ. Two questions if I may. Do you feel like the Nuclei coupled with a Senchi 120 would be warm enough on the should seasons in the alps? I’m looking at doing Queenstown to Arthur’s pass in early November and want a light piece for camp as well as emergency situations and I feel from this vid your sense of warmth would be similar to mine. Also, what would an light alternative to the Beta AR be do you think? Looking at Patagonia but not too sure at this point. Just would like to be able to buy some food while in NZ instead of investing fully in a Beta AR jacket.
@mowsertas
@mowsertas 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the questions! Haven't climbed in the alps but I would definately find a combo of Nuclei and a 120 polartec ok for shoulder seasons here in Tasmania. Assuming a thermal included also? If weather was looking cold then I would probably swap out my Nuclei for the Atom AR hoody. The other option is to pack a couple of thermal tops. I hate being cold so any hiking between sort of now and end of October I will pack on the warmer side. For light weight alternatives to the Beta AR I do like the Montbell Jackets (the Storm Cruiser is very light and a good jacket) but they are no good in Tasmanian Scrub. My Montbell still comes out often though when I want light weight option and I am hiking well formed trails. I have used Patagonia Torrentshell Jackets (H2No Fabric) in the past (and still have them) and while I am a huge fan of Patagonia I definitely prefer my jackets to be made of Gore-Tex. I just personally think it is a better fabric especially in wild weather having used H2No, eVent and Gore Tex over the years. Hope this helps and enjoy it out on the trail!

Hey, great vid I’m chasing a light ultra warm jacket that is easily packable. I don’t like wearing bulky clothing in winter so ideally I am after a jacket that would keep me warm in around 0-5deg C temps, whilst only wearing a base layer, jumper and Arc Teryx LT Hoody. Is this jacket warm enough? Dont really want to spend anymore than $400-450 AUD
@mowsertas
@mowsertas 28 күн бұрын
I would think that if you have a base layer of a thermal you would probably get buy in an Atom LT. The Nuclei might be a little warmer. Definately worth trying them on in store first if you can though. The other thing you could try would be a mesh singlet base layer under the thermal to add extra warmth. I'm testing some mesh layers out currently and will have a review in next couple of months. I generally like both the Atom LT and Nuclei in all seasons except winter here and will often take either on trips where its getting down to around -2 to -4 but i also wear a fleece and a thermal in these conditions. The outer shell also helps a lot.

Hi Mowser. I have warched a few vids now and I see how your are the great gear destroyer. So i was gokng to buy a fjallraven keb jacket and was just interested in your opinion on fjallraven as it seems it would suit your environment but you don't appear to wear it.
@mowsertas
@mowsertas Жыл бұрын
I have had no experience at all with Fjallraven as yet as it is relatively new to Tasmanian hiking stores. I am actually in Norway currently and they have a few stores here so will have a better look. No real reason other than that and once I find brands of gear I love I do tend to stick with them e.g. Patagonia, Arc'Teryx. A new brand of gear I have recently discovered is Norrona (from Norway) and I have had a good look at their gear and it is shaping up as a future brand of gear I will love!

Hi, I was looking for something to wear aroud the town in the winter, i usually wear hoodies or knit underneath and the winter is not really hard, 40F/5C, do you think atom LT or the Patagonia are the best options?
@mowsertas
@mowsertas 9 ай бұрын
Sounds similar to where I live. I definitely prefer the atom lt over the Patagonia nano air. Mainly due to wind resistance. On really cold days you would need something else under neath or a different jacket all together. I have found that lately I am wearing my atom lt all the time in the cooler weather so am still really happy with it!

I actually wore it in pretty heavy rain not long ago (didn't have a rain jacket with me). I was walking in heavy rain for about 20 minutes and ended up very wet BUT it was a cold day and i was plenty warm enough. The jacket lasted well for maybe 5 minutes before i started feeling wet. Dried out very quickly once i arrived home though!
