After listening to this song for the first time back in 2015, I immediately picked up a copy of Tracy Kidder's Mountains Beyond Mountains. I was mesmerized. By the time I finished reading, I had decided to translate the book into Greek. The story is so inspiring, I thought Greek kids and students should be able to read it in their native language. I am not a professional translator though, I am a maths teacher, so it took a while to find my way through. Yesterday, my translation "Βουνά πέρα απ' τα βουνά" was published! And it all started here, so I thought I should pay a little tribute to the greatness of good songwriting.

They heard me singing and they told me to stop, Quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock, These days, my life, I feel it has no purpose, But late at night the feelings swim to the surface. 'Cause on the suburbs the city lights shine, They're calling at me, 'come and find your kind.' Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small, Then we can never get away from the sprawl, Living in the sprawl, Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains, And there's no end in sight, I need the darkness someone please cut the lights. We rode our bikes to the nearest park, Sat under the swings, we kissed in the dark, We shield our eyes from the police lights, We run away, but we don't know why, And like a mirror these city lights shine, They're screaming at us, 'we don't need your kind' Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small, Then we can never get away from the sprawl, Living in the sprawl, Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains, And there's no end in sight, I need the darkness someone please cut the lights. They heard me singing and they told me to stop, Quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock. Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small, Can we ever get away from the sprawl? Living in the sprawl, Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains, And there's no end in sight, I need the darkness someone please cut the lights.

It hurts. It seriously fucking hurts how raw and primordial and gorgeous this song and this singer and this video are. I think you can tell great art by the amount of times you consume it and still get inspired from it. I feel the same way about Guided by Voices. I've listened to the same songs thousands of times and still shake my head in awe. Long live Arcade Fire and Guided by Voices!

I like the song, and arcade fire in general, because they are defining reality, with good melodies, lyrics. The videos show these communities for what they are. As someone who grew up in the suburbs, but also lived in cities and goes back and forth. I feel Arcade Fire's vision is spot on.

Only a few songs or bands in my life have been able to move me to tears with their music. This was one of them. The lyrics "I need the darkness someone please cut the lights" resonated very strongly with me at dark times in my life, and still does. Along with the whole sentiment of the song really. I was glad to see an album that actually deserved it for once win the Grammy for Album of the Year that year.

+geo charles Funny to see people proudly saying "I'm old and I listen to Arcade Fire!". I listen a lot to the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, the Byrds, and other quote-unquote "oldies" on KZfaq, and on comment forums of songs from *those* bands, you will see at every turn comments saying "I'm and I still listen to !". Since Arcade Fire is a contemporary band, I guess it appears to be out of the ordinary for old folks to like it, so it's kind of the reverse of 60s/70s bands: people expect old people to listen to the Beatles and young people to listen to Arcade Fire. Great that you like Arcade Fire, sir, and I think more people who grew up on the "oldies" groups I listed above should listen to Arcade Fire. It's the closest thing we have to a modern Pink Floyd.

a while back i was at a comedy gig and before the gig started this song was playing on the PA. At the time I had no idea who it was. I instantly reached for my phone to shazam it only to be met by connection issues. I was left wondering for an eternity who it was. I hopelessly attempted to hum it to people but it was a lost cause. I Couldn't even recall a single lyric only segments of the beautiful melody. A few days ago my brother put it on and I could have cried with joy. its now one of my all time favourite songs.

I know Arcade Fire for some time. Already their first album i liked it and second album convinced me, that Arcade Fire are really good band...For some time i did not pay attention to them and until recently i have returned to their music. I played their third album The Suburbs. And I completely froze, obviously in a good sense... Without exaggeration, i was amazed, at how excellent album The Suburbs is! Each song is a fantasy, original. For me, is The Suburbs one of the most interesting albums, I've ever heard. And this song is absolutely stunning, it is my favorite of the entire album. Régine has a really beautiful voice, the song she clearly raised to higher realms, to perfection! Also, i think the movie is a success, i have no words...According to me, every time, when the band enters the stage, her performance is also a theatrical performance, that always impress. I know, that Canada and the US have many musical giants and great cult bands, and i regard Arcade Fire to the best bands in the world... Sorry for my terrible English... :-)

I love this song, and i think it has to be my favourite Arcade Fire song ever. I love all their songs and albums but this really has struck a chord with me. I live in rural Ireland commuting to the Big Schmoke (Dublin) every day and I hate seeing how it's sprawling out to rural areas, eating up the land and no-one knowing their neighbours, whereas the area I grew up in was a community sort of place where we looked out for our own. In towns/cities you don't get that anymore. I was there in the Point/3 Arena last night and they were absolutely awesome!!!!!!!

I think this song and video may be my favorite on earth. I've probably watched it 100 times. The first time I really digested the lyrics, I was in the process of moving from a small town to a city, and being a gay male musician, I thought that moving to a city would be like a safe haven. The lyrics "they're calling at us, come and find your kind" are later conflicted by "we don't need your kind!" is such a masterful line, stating that prejudice is everywhere. It's a strong reminder that we're not alone in our struggle for acceptance. Thanks for making this beautiful piece of work.

haha, I sort of resent them a bit, because I didn't even grow up in a suburb, I grew up in a dying rural town and it was awful in a lot of ways, but at least I was "free" in some senses but it felt really hopeless. I always wished I lived next to a city to escape to.

I could listen to this song a thousand times in a row and not get tired of it. This and ready to start were the first songs I ever heard them play (on SNL) and I was blown away. Picked up The Suburbs a few days later. A few weeks later bought Funeral and Neon Bible.

I'm sorry your parents don't accept your feelings for others of the same gender. It's a really outdated way of thinking, even though gay people have existed for centuries. Heck, even Shakespeare was gay! Shakespeare was unique and so are you! Clearly you are not meant to be like the rest:) It doesn't matter if they don't accept you-what matters most is if you accept yourself. Don't let others' opinions stop you from being happy dude! Especially with movies coming out lately that support homosexuality such as Call Me By Your Name or Love, Simon, I hope they can come around to seeing that love is love. I wish you the best!

People that say that probably grew up to great artists like the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon , Fleetwood Mac, and Van Morrison among many others great artists that perfected their craft and the few record companies looked for talent with elite songwriting and great lyricists...the combination of a less saturated music scene, record companies valuing substance and real talent, and artists in general growing up with music aimed at an older age group for the first time targeting a younger audience.. resulting in smart beautiful music with an intelligent meaning and rebellious and catchy at the same time dominating record charts so the entire country was exposed to this great music...of course we know this still exists but you have to work to find it which makes the art more rewarding when you discover a song like this....granted this is one of the few bands in the last 20 years that achieved commercial success without sacrificing my opinion of quality....a few that check these boxes and essentially restored my faith in humanity are Radiohead, Modest Mouse, The Shins, Vampire Weekend, Future Islands, The White Stripes, The National and Cold War Kids
