Lyrics
Keep both eyes on the road tonight
'Cause I'm driving home to you
A terrible song on the radio
Baby, what else is new?
You don't want to talk
You don't want to touch
You don't even wanna watch TV
You say I can't see the forest for the trees
So burn it all down, and bring the ashes to me
Keep both eyes on the road tonight
'Cause God knows where I've been
Officer please, don't check my breath
That ain't my only sin
You don't want to talk
You don't want to touch
You don't even wanna watch TV
If you can't see the forest for the trees
Just burn it all down, and bring the ashes to me
Keep you waiting, hour after hour
Every night, in your lonely tower
Looking down at all the wreckage
When we met, you'd never expect this
And you said, maybe we don't deserve love
Maybe we don't deserve love
Maybe we don't deserve love
We don't deserve
We don't deserve love
Maybe we don't deserve love
Keep both eyes on the road tonight
'Cause I'm driving home to you
A terrible song on the radio
Baby, what else is new?
Been hiding my scars in broad daylight bars
Behind laugh tracks on TV
If you can't see the forest for the trees
Just burn it all down, and bring the ashes to me
Keep you waiting, hour after hour
Every night, in your lonely tower
Looking down at all the wreckage
When we met you'd never expect this
And you say, maybe we don't deserve love
Keep you waiting, hour after hour
Every night, in your lonely tower
Looking down at all the wreckage
When we met you'd never expect this
And you say, maybe we don't deserve love
Maybe we don't deserve love
Maybe we don't deserve love
We don't deserve
We don't deserve love
(We don't deserve love)
Mary, roll away the stone
The men that you love
Always leave you alone
Well go on Mary
Roll away the stone
The men you love always leave you alone
You hear your mother screaming
You hear your daddy shout
You try to figure it out
You never figure it out
Your mother's screaming
That you don't deserve love
If you don't deserve love
And if I don't deserve love
Could we deserve?
Come down off your cross
And tell me!
It's always the Christ-types
Mary, roll away the stone
The one that you love
Is gonna leave you alone
Particularly the Christ-types
Mary, roll away the stone
The one you love
Always leave you alone
It's always the Christ-types
You're waiting on

When he says "Your mother screaming" "That you don't deserve love", man, trying to picture a scene like that, is so hard. This lyrics are really heartbreaking. I love the contrast between the topic of the song and the light sound.

Describing my true experience with this song runs the risk of sounding fake. I just broke up with a live-in girlfriend of a few years, and decided to fly to Europe to visit wineries. I was half sleeping on the plane while listening to this album for the first time when this song came on. It struck me so profoundly that it woke me up. I looked out the window and was flying over the English Channel with the sun rising. The rest of that five week trip in the hills of Tuscany and deserts of Spain was defined by this song. I love it.

Your experience is so similar to mine. I, however, was flying over the Atlantic landing on Dublin. I cannot hear this song and not think about her, or the second her I met in Dublin. widM- I agree 100%. This album is very different from the others and I see a lot of exactly what you said too. Every song has some people saying "this is the best on the album, you guys did an amazing job" and others saying "this is the worst album Arcade Fire ever put out. It's just terrible." I personally think that in 10 years a lot of people will be thinking "I hated this when it came out but now that it's grown on everyone else, and Pitchfork retroactively changed their score from 5.6 to 9.5 (Just like they did Radiohead's catalogue, they love to do that). Arcade Fire really did a great job not making the same album over and over."... Who knows though, maybe people will just give it the one listen and move on to what's next, I hope not though. Arcade Fire took a chance and I feel like they did a good job. I think the tracks I'm not huge on now will grow on me but Creature Comfort is amazing... Sorry for the book long response haha

This is an important remark! You like it because it's now familiar. Or, it's a "slow burn" of profound quality. This album didn't hit me instantly, although I was nuts about the single Everything Now. I went to two concerts. Tracks like this one are are now like comforting friends. The single Everything Now just seems like blah-blah-blah pop (although still a total hoot at a big concert!!) I think the album is generally great. Because it is familiar, or it has essential goodness in its soul? I don't know. Some of the crap I listened to in the 90s lights me up with hysterical nostalgia, although it's still pretty crappy.....

This song hits in a very real way. The rest of the album up until this point left me feeling quite empty, probably due to the masterfully vapid theme throughout the record, but then this song came in and hit me like a freight train. With this track, I think Arcade Fire is describing the heart of their new sound and what it all really means within the context of all the show and exposition going along with it. Good job Arcade Fire, you continue to wreck me ways I didn't even know I needed.

Are suggesting that people are lazy or stupid enough to simply copy the opinions of others? That rather than form their own opinion on something they instead look to somebody else's opinion and go with that? That's a rather shallow and baseless assumption to make. This album is dividing both critics and fans because it's quite far removed from the Arcade Fire we know and expect. Even more so because this album rarely plays into the strengths of the band, neither musically or lyrically. It's a scattershot of styles, some of which work better than others, and that alone makes the album hard to appreciate as a whole. It's not musically consistent in any way, shape or form. It's OK for people to not like this work. As much as it for people to love it. I can completely understand why many would dislike it. I don't think the world is entirely mindless. I believe there are plenty of people, Arcade Fire fans and critics alike, who are capable of forming their own opinions on such things.
@JaxPortal
@JaxPortal 7 жыл бұрын
yeah it's not really baseless when i hear some people clearly just repeating (almost word for word, sometimes) opinions i've already seen given in certain critical articles. there are definitely reasons to dislike this album but you can't deny that many people have a tendency to parrot the beliefs of those they look up to

@allenerickson987
@allenerickson987 7 жыл бұрын
I meant more that the change isn't necessarily the problem but that the quality doesn't seem good enough. Consider how many of the album's songs just repeat the title of the song over and over again.
@joshuawilton130
@joshuawilton130 7 жыл бұрын
That's absolutely true. Lyrically the album seems weaker, but I'd also put a lot of that down to the disco genre format. Disco invites repetition and direct lyrics as opposed to alternative rock which has a greater capacity for rich lyrics and storytelling. I do agree that the quality is not as good as the other four albums though.
@allenerickson987
@allenerickson987 7 жыл бұрын
Huh, I didn't consider that. Some of the ones that repeat a lot aren't disco, though (Chemistry, Infinite Content - Infinite Content probably being the worst offender of the album). I actually don't think of the album as trying to be a dance album but as trying to be a pop album in the way Bowie/Talking Heads/etc. can be considered pop. It's also not specifically one genre in a way that's actually kind confusing. It's synth/electronic-heavy on about half the songs or more and guitar-heavy in about a third of the songs. Earlier records have diversity without giving up coherence musically, but I don't think this album is coherent musically (although theme-wise it's as coherent as the Suburbs if not more, it's just not very subtle about it). Maybe due to multiple producers? I don't know. Lyrically, maybe they should have chosen subjects that were more personal (or approached them in a way that was more personal and fleshed-out). Most of these songs feel very 3rd person observation (even when it's written from a first person perspective) rather than the 1st person narrative you see in most of their other work. It feels very much "kids these days", and while it brings up topics worth talking about, it's doing so a bit too blatantly and not adding much new to the conversation. Musically, instead of bringing on multiple producers to help them create something that they wanted, I think they should have taken the time to experiment on their own and figure out what they wanted to create, even if that took years longer. Month of May is one of the simplest songs on the Suburbs, but it took them years to get it where it ended up (the song actually references this), and I think it stands up as a great song. I feel like there are several songs on this album that could really benefit from more time. Also, some of the sounds they use on this album seem strange (occasionally just annoying), and I think more time might have changed that (more time - weird sounds seem less novel - they change it to make it more timeless), but that's speculation.

Alright. It's been a couple days. Here's my favorite band, but I was very confused by this album. I hated Peter Pan. Good God Damn was kind of boring. Both Infinite Contents felt pointless. But I spent a day listening to their full discography, re-listened to this, and I'm starting to really appreciate it. I know nobody cares, but I'm picking out a lot of classic Arcade Fire elements as well as some new aspects that only they could pull off in this album. What I'm saying is that I think I'm just really proud of Arcade Fire for always impressing and surprising me.

Listen to the album twice a day, once on the way to work, again on the way home. Of course songs pop into my brain as I work, the important lyrics "bubble up" as Regine might say. Newsflash friends....this is a classic album, the continuity is there, listen more carefully. Totally reject the argument there are weak songs on this album. That's a big nope. People, please put aside the need for nice, neat, 4 minute songs that are snug like musical LEGOS. Art is suppose to make you slightly uncomfortable. As Win said recently "people hated Wake Up the first few times we played it." Consider that for a moment. Now everyone gets all emotional because they have something to love and we all connect for a few minutes in the certainty of our common love and fear for each other, and our collective journey together. There is so little music now that deserves respect. Music your children will ask you about when they "Wake Up." Nothing on this album is a throw away. Since you reading this comment, you are probably a fan. On that basis chances are you are pretty intelligent, just enjoy the feeling. The walls of the diamond mine are all around you. Love all you people, whoever you are, however you arrived here....Peace.

Anthony Fantano said the lyrics were cringy and all his fanboys jumped right on that train. I guess some people started confusing blunt with cringy. "Born in a diamond mine, it's all around you but you can't touch it". Some of the best lyrics since Reflektor. Great track, good album.

Okay here's the deal with Creature Comfort, it's one of the best songs on the albums but it's so obnoxious for him to declare how Funeral saved someone's life in such a blatantly show off-y way. I love this album and I think it will age very well, but dear lord Win why write such obnoxious lyrics
@jaramoneja
@jaramoneja 7 жыл бұрын
He didn't specifically say it saved her life. "she filled up her bathtub and put on our first record"...maybe she just gave up on suicide. Also, knowing the way Win makes his music - it probably happened so writing the truth isn't obnoxious.

This record is so underappreciated, and I just don't understand why - the message is relevant for the times and most of it works musically. There are a lot of good tracks, but this one's my favorite. Everything Now, Creature Comfort and Electric Blue are also excellent.

It's just that people in general don't react well to change. Even Reflektor was trashed when it came out. Neon Bible was called a sophomore slump. Its a cycle that always happens.

This song paints such an image. I just see 18 yr old Win driving down a long desert road at night in 80s Indiana, with a sad girl in the front seat. With flashbacks of the night seeing the girls religious mum and dad shouting at her and win saying "they don't deserve love" cause they are sinners, she runs away with him stops by their church to pray for forgiveness for deciding to run away from home that night, at the part of the song where win sings "come down off the cross" it's to tell her to come off the alter cause it time to go. and it ends with the back in the present on the deserted road driving into the sun rise

Arcade Fire is such a classy band ignored by anykind of mainstream here in germany. I know a lot of people who like their new album with roots in very different genres of music. In my opinion that is everything that is Arcade Fire about. They are above special tastes. They are no fitting in categories. So is the sound of their new album. Diversity masterclass sound for people with taste.
