Arcane | A League of Legends Story is Netflix's most successful show of the year, and it's an animated one. How is Arcane able to invest so many people though? Easy answer.. its animation. No matter how impeccable the story and character work is, how it's presented is most important of all. Let's talk about the power of animation.

Finally a youtuber who noticed the show looked like a concept art that came to life. Most of them are saying it's similar to Spiderverse but that movie was made to look like a comic unlike Arcane where it has more of a concept art feel to it. Also love your breakdown to the animation and script/story.

The animation REALLY stood out for me in the first episode. I kept replaying the scene of the kids running from the enforcers and slamming against a wall one by one to run down an alley. Each character hits the wall in a different way, but every time it felt like they held weight. The camera work really helped too. But the crying dude, the crying was perfect. I rewatched the powder breakdown scene with no volume and the animation still held a lot of the emotional tension. This series is awesome overall, but the animation is incredible.

3:03 -> I don't think Spider-Verse is what made Riot/Fortiche's studio take their chance at making Arcane, since they've been working on it for 6 years, i.e. way before Spider-Verse even came out. Riot+Fortiche also released the KDA Pop/stars music video that uses the same art style, which was before Spider-verse came out.

I would even argue that Riot and Fortiche have been using the art style since they started making videos in 2013 with the Get Jinxed video. When you follow the timeline from Get Jinxed -> Warrors -> Seconds (for Ekko release) -> RISE: Worlds 2018 -> POP/STARS and now Arcane, you can see the art style getting more and more refined.

I hope that Arcane's unanimous success proves that, if anything, animation is an incredible medium that can absolutely create things that cannot be replicated or even attempted in Live Action material. The moment that was cinema for me was in episode 3 when vie cried while pinned. All of her friends were dead, her father was fighting to keep her alive, and she sees that this is her sister’s (the one she told to stay behind) fault. Also, when do you see the main character cry? She’s supposed to be the badass fighter person; and she gets overwhelmed. Great show.

I've rewatched Arcane a few times now, and everytime I get to Powder's first breakdown after being left behind, I have to mentally brace myself. Same is true of the climax, when Powder screams after being punched and left by Vi. Powder's crying is ugly, harsh, annoying, and heartbreaking. It's honestly a pain to watch. Not because it was poorly shown/made, but because it felt too real at times. It sounded like an actual kid being hurt by the person they love most. Those scenes are art. Episode 3 is art. This series is art.

I agree, and first three episodes are my fovorite. I love the whole of it, but I just think the first three are pure art while the rest is more entertainment. Just makes you have to accept that different people enjoy different parts, while I love the character building and scene setting of 1 - 3, many people love more action focused and plot heavyer episodes later on. But I was always more character focused fan, my favorite author is Joe Abercrombie and all of my favorite movies have interesting, well developed and well performed characters. As far as I'm concerned, I would have loved the whole season to be that character study of the two sisters, with Vander trying to keep everything from falling apart and Silco slowly chipping away his grip on the situation from the shadows. Alas, I do realise Arcane wasn't made just for me and after all, I love the rest too, just not with the same passion I have reserved for episodes 1 - 3. Except episode 7 and that bridge scene, that might be my favorite piece of visual media ever, art style, music, flow, subtext... all without a single line of dialogue, oooooh damn, I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

[****Spoilers****] Act 1 works really bloody well as almost a stand alone movie and it's great for that. Even the simple way it utilized some basic story telling concepts like using character archetypes or recognizable scenarios/tropes as a way to ease you into this unknown fantasy world without a mountain of exposition and then gradually adding layers after it has you locked in. Then just as you think you've got a handle on where things are going, it punches you in the gut.. repeatedly. That said I actually love the latter half of the season. The way every episode gives you an insight into another character that can completely change how you perceived them because now you see their perspective, the nuance to the conflict between the two cities and how everyone's struggling to find a way through the mess none of them have a real answer too. And then ending it with that dinner table scene. What a bold, fantastic way to resolve the core season conflict without relying on action. Just an emotionally wrenching, fucked up family dinner that you know can only end in tragedy because everything that created this trainwreck happened years ago and now all anyone can do is watch as the disaster unfolds. A classic tragedy. I feel like they took a pretty bold risk with this as well. The whole story is built on perspective, it's built on the idea that all these characters have motivations and wants and reasons for doing what they do and thats what drives the events of the plot instead of the other way around. it asks the viewer to understand these characters even if they dont like them. If the viewer can't do that, or if the show doesn't sell those perspectives well enough and the audience comes down to far on one characters side over another, the whole show just may not work for them. The end of Act 1 especially, if it can't get you to see where both characters were coming from and why they both do what they do in those last moments, if you land squarely on ones side or the others then you're probably just going to be irritated with the rest of that narrative. It would have been so much safer to just make it clear whos right, whos wrong and who we should be rooting for. But taking that risk and doing it the way they did was so much more powerful and impactful.

Superb animation and great scene directing is just one thing that Arcane did right, besides the incredible presentation brilliant cinematography, it absolutely excelled in selling the viewer multiple complex, radically different, and yet, genuinely lovable characters whom have methods and motivations you may not applaud, but you understand and are hooked on their personal story all the same. This coupled with phenomenal worldbuilding, engaging philosophical themes, moral dilemmas, and incredible buildup to payoff makes Arcane a truly one of a kind story that proves to everyone that animated shows can and has been outdoing its live tv counterparts for years now.

Thinking things that are under their noses the whole time "new" and "ground breaking" if something actually made it to the pop culture. Can't say that Spiderverse "established" that art style though...Riot's Get Jinxed MV, also by Fortiche, was released way years before that Spidey movie XD Also, "under Riot Games' watch" is an understatement as they made the show in-house... Netflix just streamed it. God, why do people still can't believe that Riot already has its own production staff.. they even freakin' hire a violinist. Riot has tons of money to spare, they don't need others to do their stuff. They also commission underrated or not well known artists and studios.

What I personally appreciate is how they created a larger than life world but filled it with extremely human and nuanced characters. It's very similar to what I think a steampunk world would like like in real life. All of the characters are grounded with extremely reasonable and understandable goals and motivations inside of a fantastical but unforgiving world. The show doesn't go out of it's way to assign titles like "Hero" or "Villain". All of the characters are just people who come into conflict over their virtues and are trying to make the best out of what they're given. The political climate between The Lanes and the Upper City are understandable and realistic driven by a history that's cohesive and makes sense. Along with the stunning artwork and parallels in scenery between the two locations, the city feels alive. Like it was there before we started watching and it'll continue to move on long after we stop.

2021 was such an unbelievably great year for animation that had been building up for nearly a decade with the release of movies like into the spider-verse and general improvements in the accessibility and quality of the art form as a whole. shows like this cemented the idea that animation has the ability to be incredibly compelling, expressive, moving, and just gorgeous to look at. while light-hearted, fun animations or animations geared towards children are an amazing part of the genre and absolutely have their place, the fact that arcane is such a raw, devastating story that is not only unimpeded by its animation but made far better by it is incredible. it shows that “adult animation” doesn’t have to be a soulless cash grab filled with over-sexualisation, gore, and crude humor. animation is such a powerful tool and i am absolutely stoked to see the course this show will set for it in the next ten years.

I can't imagine an actual actor manage to convey such intense but subtly nuanced emotion as Jinx shows at the end of the bridge fight.

I was recently talking to a friend of mine and an image of Spider-Verse came up on her tablet. I mentioned that I really like that movie and she said, dismissively, 'what, that cartoon?' Oh, the things people miss out on.

To be frank I discovered the show thanks to a very recent Wizards of the coast/ Riot collaboration, classic Magic the Gathering old player move. And oh boy I was blown away. I mean when Powder launches the flare or when a deeply injured Echo show himself to Heimerdinger or when Victor discovers the true nature of the power he's summoning. Could watch this show everyday of this season, what a beautiful and deep Steampunk adaptation, Riot you're a fucking clever and talented studio and longue vie à Fortiche!

Thanks for saying it out loud - so many people don't want to believe an animated show based on a video game could be better than the really mediocre Squid Games lol

I totally agree about the "Crying" animation. I know nothing about League of Legend and knew nothing about the characters going into it...but a minute and a half in, when Vi broke down, Powder hugging her and that beautiful score was playing. I suddenly stopped, asking "How the hell am I suddenly crying over a show less than 2 mins into it!?". That's when I just knew that I was watching something special.
