A few months back I did a video about the Arch Guided Installer and at the time it was an absolute train wreck but I gave it a few months and I have to admit it's now become an amazing piece of software.

I know I can create my entire layout in /mnt and use that. But, with all installers (ie. calamares), I don't know why they let you choose BTRFS and then give you no options to create a subvolume layout. The entire usefulness is predicated on having a sane layout for proper snapshots and backups.
@Flash136
@Flash136 2 жыл бұрын
Ubuntu already creates subvolumes for root and home when you install with Btrfs. It'd be really nice if they let you install with a custom layout. Same with ZFS.

I'm just guessing here but I think at 8:44 the "All open-source (default)" option is equivalent to installing video-linux with mhwd. It basically installs the open-source driver for the graphics card you need and usually works if you switch your gpu-hardware at some point. It is also the default-option for manjaro and other distros I've used in the past. It's the correct choice for a default option imo.

Very nice, Arch is very nice distro, and I think, making it more accessible this way, is great way to actually get more people familiar with command line, Like, in my case: Back in 2018, was afraid, of distros like Arch, But there was, Antergos - long story short, it actually convinced me to try plain arch, because how amazing Antergos was (Well, it was plain Arch with GNOME, so), and first try in VM, success, then bare metal, some things i did wrong, but, I learned. And later down the road, I went as far as Gentoo, and I think Antergos, being accessible Arch, helped a lot. Though, Gentoo suits me far more, its nice to see improvements in other distros Go Arch :D Though I doubt even if I go back to arch, that i will use that, because... no ZFS option, alas. Also great video, just found this channel

Tbh the Installer is not good. A TUI based on dialog or ncurses would make a few things more obvious. Also isn't one point of the Arch installation that you kind of get to know what is executed? They could display the executed commands and it would not harm the user experimence. With a TUI based in dialog some help option with information about the current step could be included. So it would rather benefit people when they want to know about something, when they need help or when they want to do a installation by hand based on what the script does but maybe with a few steps customized.

arch needs maintenance. i think making an installer isn't the greatest idea because the end user will eventually run into a problem and have no clue how to fix it. the whole idea behind arch is to build it yourself. but in the age of containers It makes things easier I guess. I'm still going to create my own partitions and install it the old way. you can keep the install scripts and AUR helpers. installing unneeded drivers: i would. if your computer pukes on you it makes migration easier. I create 6 partitions on them. the 5th is an unformatted one in case it needs to go into an older bios system. its only 4MB and if you end up in such a situation you will wish you had sacrificed it. drivers don't take up that much room. i keep a separate home / and boot partition and a swap that 2x my 4GB of RAM and the UEFI one.

It would be quicker to learn how to install Arch rather than learn all the mistakes you couldn't make with the old installer

Oh, oh! Does this mean Arch Linux is loosing its "elitist" moniker? Seriously, anything making the installation process easier for the hoardes of Microsoft Windows migrants watching Brodie, Derek, and Luke videos is a positive step forward. For some reason I felt as though I was watching an SLS Linux installation circa 1991-1992.

I started using Linux 21 years ago. Looking at this "Finally Amazing (?!?) guided installer" and the list of "improvements" over "what the installer used to be just before this video" makes me wonder why do some people insist on getting way-way-way back to the stone age of the operating systems ... I see Arch hyped like crazy due to Valve's decision to base SteamOS 3 on it and I see so many 0-day-Linux-noobs banging their heads against the walls while trying to replace their "suddenly boring" Windows 10 with "the latest and greatest and soon to become the -de facto- distro in Linux gaming". *Not even a freaking ncurses based TUI installer ?!? In 2021 ?!?* From this very particular perspective I can only conclude that Arch is the bleeding edge of a long forgotten Linux stone age. Disappointing !
