Archaeologists reveal likely age of enigmatic Cerne Abbas Giant - and it's not what anyone expected

It's been a mystery for decades - who carved a picture of a naked man into a Dorset hillside, when did they do it and why? Well we're still not certain about why but thanks to some groundbreaking new archaeological research, we've got a better idea about when.
The Cerne Abbas Giant is Britain’s largest, and possibly most recognisable, chalk hill figure, standing at 180ft (55 metres). Generations have speculated about the age and meaning of the club-brandishing giant. Was he a depiction of the legendary demi-god Hercules, an ancient fertility symbol, or even the soldier and statesman Oliver Cromwell? Another legend holds that the figure was carved around the body of a giant who was slain by local people after he terrorised the countryside.
The National Trust have been looking after him since 1920 and in 2020, Trust archaeologists, in partnership with the University of Gloucestershire, Allen Environmental Archaeology and the Pratt Bequest, used state-of-the art sediment analysis to discover some more of the Giants secrets. You can hear about what they discovered in this video and there's a further update here: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england...
Find out more about the giant on our website www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visi...

I can remember that some years ago it was reported that someone had researched all the large figures cut in the landscape that were believed to be ancient and with one exception he found that they dated to the mid seventeenth century. The one exception is the Uffington White Horse which had been dated on stylistic grounds to the iron age. After his scientific analysis this was put back to the bronze age. To say that the other figures were medieval but were then 'lost' and then mysteriously 'found' again seems like wishful thinking and completely unscientific.
@sango_wango851
@sango_wango851 6 ай бұрын
What's not mentioned in this video is that it was already known based on old drawings and survey's that large parts of the structure has changed and been re-done at points in time - like specifically the giant phallus which used to be much smaller. If you're looking for an explanation as to why there isn't written history around to match the scientific dating it seems like a pretty reasonable guess as to what might explain that.

I believe the Cerne Giant has been covered, uncovered, overgrown, refreshed and recut many times over the centuries. I also recall reading somewhere, many moons ago, that there is evidence of a lion-skin cape, no longer visible, around the shoulders of the Giant. Along with the special club, this would appear to be a representation of Hercules of Greek mythology.

One thought I find a little, well, gripping, is that this could be Thunor. There's not much to go off, but this dating (a time where Germanic beliefs and Christianity were living side by side and edging ahead of the former) alongside there being signs from our broad knowledge about Germanic beliefs that Thunor may have been a kind of fertility god, as well as the club, which I believe is seen in a few depictions of the god instead of the hammer. Though, we know hammers (to be worn at the neck or hip) that are often linked to Thunor were knocking around the in the 600's in Kent, so it might be a little odd if, not that far away, they thought a club was a better fit. It's not a strong case, but it made me think lol. We'll likely never know about things like this.

There is some similarity of style to Southern English slip wear potter of the 17th century. This employed rough cartoonish depictions of people made with local clays and cheap earth colours, probably for a lower middleclass customer who couldn't afford or possibly even want the foreign blue (often more classical) pottery. Ironically the Giant was likely recut in this new local style just after it wasn't recorded in the local books.

This slip wear style has the same bendy arms, eyebrows and large oval eyes. Sometimes, but not always, the nose is shown as an extension of the eyebrows like a capital Y. If not, the nose is most often just a dot. Sex identity details are often not shied from, with large breasts and nipples depicted on female figures. So, if the Giant had a large phallus, they wouldn't be afraid to restore it.

That's a good point - it is clearly a portrait of Florida Man, engaged in his favourite Florida Man activities of smashing stuff, getting naked, and generally freaking out on Bath Salts.

Yes they can ! There's a giant mountain up near Lakeland, if you climb to the top, on a Clear water day, and look northeast, you can clearly see Sir Nabbas 🤗

In the 1960s, my mother was having a very difficult time conceiving a child (despite visiting a number of fertility clinics). Finally, she resolved to drive to Dorset and spend a night sleeping on the Cerne Abbas Giant’s large phallus. It worked! The following spring I was born and I’m 6’6”.

So what year was it built? I did some research into this a few years ago and reached the same vague conclusion as has been given here ("medieval"). The Cerne monastery is Anglosaxon and the closest I got to credibility was that the Giant was placed on the hill by heathens in some sort of competition with the newly established religious house (around 900 AD).

If it were first done in prehistory I suppose it might only have come down to the medieval period as a barely distinct trench like the figures in the Atacama desert. They were not recognized until recently.

Before puritan morality a phallus may have symbolised verility. In Japan there is still a significant phallus celebration. Some Indian temples are covered with copulating couples. Symbols are not the same to everyone. The same symbol may have a completely different interpretation.

Some odd points that stand out to me. 1. The head is comparatively small to the rest of the body. Shaped like an inverted teardrop. Lacking ears and nose. But eyes are round and eyebrows clearly distinguished. Most people have almond shaped eyes. 2. The club shape/design is unusual. Could it be a sword/club/fraternity symbol, designed for a purpose unknown to us from the Crusades / Knights Templar or other for example? 3. The hand holding the club/sword. Focus on the Right thumb compared to the Left hand very small. Is there any significance of that? Can anyone shed light on any of the above?
