@Catholic Chroma I'll give a early Saints quote on the anti christ. Polycarp of Smyrna “Everyone who does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is an antichrist [1 John 4:2-3, 2 John 7]; whoever does not confess the testimony of the cross is of the devil; and whoever perverts the sayings of the Lord for his own desires, and says that there is neither resurrection nor judgment, such a one is the firstborn of Satan” (Letter to the Philadelphians 7:1 [A.D. 135]). Catholics are not pure fundamentalists... so we need to understand a little bit more about how the pope cannot be the anti christ. It wasn't until Luther called the pope the antichrist and split the church that anyone even believed that the pope could be the anti christ. Luther persuaded a lot of people to believe this heresy and it's sad to see Catholics (among all groups of people) are just buying into that lie now.

Thank you for your response. While what you state is true, it's also a fact that there can be infiltration in the Church as we have experienced in the past 80 years. This doesn't prevent a pope to be a sinner, nor condemned formally as heretic, as what happened to a pope before. St. Malachy also prophesied a pope who would be an Antichrist. The pope is also human when he doesn't fultill all the conditions needed in defining a doctrine ex cathedra.
