I wrote an academic research paper a couple of years ago (for my Master's degree) on Art Deco architecture, especially so the designs of Joseph Bell DeRemer and the architectural dream team of Charles Buechner & Henry Orth. Those talented architects did an abundance of architectural work in North Dakota and Minnesota, most of which is still standing and still in use. The Chrysler Building in Manhattan is a perfect example of the beauty and style of the Art Deco era. This video was a delight to me, a nerdy history and architecture fan. Thanks!

That’s Bollox. A cute tale but not possible. You’d need to be lots higher, curvature of the Earth is visible from about 35,000 feet! Chrysler building is less than 1000 feet. Anyway, how the hell can you see the curvature if you can’t see the horizon? Liar, delusional or idiot?

Art Deco, like Expressionist Art in film and painting, was a very modernist departure from pre-World War I schools of design, as there seemed a strong desire to leave a traditional 'past' behind, and look to the future. I think they're the answer to the Bauhaus style, which left a sense of 'delight' absent, but which Deco embraced. The Chrysler building is loved by people who have never been to NYC. Thanks for the tour, and for the terrific breakdown of the elements that define this wonderful building. :)

I learned of the Chrysler Building in the video game Parasite Eve (based on the book) back in the mid-late 90s. In the game, it serves as the final area of the true ending of the story. You have to climb all 77 floors and every 10th floor houses a boss. The interior was nothing like the actual building of course, but every since learning of the building, the silhouette and it’s overall exterior design became something special to me. It would be about 5 years later I’d actually go to New York to find it and step in the entryway as it is of course off-limits to the public… and sadly I wasn’t able to find a good view of it from outside, but that’ll have to be for a future trip. I love this skyscraper and it’s become the standard-bearer of skyscraper design for me. I’ve yet to find another building that draws visual interest as much as this building does. It’s almost 100 years old now and every other building built these days just lacks making a statement outside of height and width. They might add interest to a cityscape from afar, but on their own and up close… it’s just another building full of squares that was designed with a ruler.

I don't know how many companies are still in existence who are producing original Art Deco artefacts in house from back in the 1920s to the present day, but one I do know of is Lyon & Healy (Chicago) who've been making their Salzedo Model concert harp since 1928 (designed by Witold Gordon) and is a real slice of the Art Deco movement which is still in production 95 years after its launch. They have made other models reflecting the tastes of different decades (the Victorian Style 23, the Art Nouveau Style 11, the very 1950s looking Style 30, etc.), but to me the Salzedo Model has the most impact of them all with its bold geometric angular design which at a distance (and out of focus) still has the outline of a classic concert harp.
