The day finally arrives for us to lift the cabin walls. My Cousin's front-end loader comes in handy for this task. We take a chance during the lift by removing some bolts early on in the process. Placing the first ribs proves to be challenging but we overcome the obstacles with the help of our Hippie Word of the Day.

Looks good. Jack Henske saw the video and has a few safety observations for us to discuss. Just kidding. Keep up the good work.

Haha, i actually purchased a safety harness for that task but didn’t have time to try it on beforehand so didn’t use it…trust me, I was nervous being up that high

I’m amazed at the size of your arched cabin. It looks huge! Come to think of it, I think yours is the first one I’ve seen. It appears you’ll have a lot of living space, plus extra.

Arched Cabins has many sizes available but I purchased the 24x32 which is a perfect size for me…I’m in the finishing stages now (way behind on getting videos posted) but yes, lots of living space

@@okiehippiefarm Wow! Seems like you are moving along really fast. You are obviously focused and determined to get your cabin completed before winter. Are you doing all the finishing yourself? I’ll be building my cabin way up north from Oklahoma in northern Canada. I’ve never been to your part of the US, but it is very far south. It must be much warmer where you are. Just my guess.

@@ShikokuFoodForest yes for the most part, planning to do the finishing myself. Actually working on that now. Oklahoma winters are nothing compared to Canadian winters I’m sure but we do get ice storms and it does get in the single digit degrees Fahrenheit here periodically so freezing pipes and loss of electricity can be an issue

@@okiehippiefarm Good hearing from you. I sure like your cabin, so far. It will make a lovely, comfortable home. I’m looking forward to viewing more of your videos. A big FYI: it seems arched cabins are only manufactured in Texas and are unfortunately not available in Canada. Shipping to northwestern Canada would be cost prohibitive due to the extreme distance. I can consider designing and building my own arched cabin; however, it would be much easier just to build a traditional non-arched plan with vertical walls and gable roof. I fully expect to be doing the entire project from design to completion on my own. I will not have family members in the area available for assistance like you. Your land looks like a very peaceful, relaxing place to live. Simply wonderful.

@@ShikokuFoodForest I really like the look of the arched cabins too and that’s what drew me to them (and the fact they are somewhat inexpensive compared to other cabin kits). Looking forward to seeing your build when that time comes

I didn’t notice, but is the bottom of the wall secured to the subfloor? I guess it must be. That wall is so high, I guess you sure weren’t going to lift that by hand. 😅 That’s a lot of weight!
@okiehippiefarm
@okiehippiefarm Жыл бұрын
Yes there is a steel bracket at the bottom which we bolted down to the wooden subfloor once we had raised the walls…total weight of 1 wall was a little less than 1,000 pounds

Great idea! We had quite a list of contraptions we were going to build to lift the walls and then my cousin showed up with the front end loader to make this one of the easiest (but still mentally stressful) tasks ✌️

Do you think the man lift you rented could have lifted walls? I’m trying to cut costs because I no nobody with tractor. Per your advice and I could see that one will come in very handy for steel roofing, chimney etc thank. PS is this you playing guitar and mandolin in background 🎸
@okiehippiefarm
@okiehippiefarm Жыл бұрын
@Ben Jenkins it’s possible the man lift could work to lift the wall. I’d recommend speaking with the rental company to understand any weight limitations. I believe each rib weighs around 50-60 pounds and the ridge beam probably weight 150-200 by itself to give you a general idea. Also if you do use the man lift for this task, definitely practice with the controls in the man lift first because you’ll want a smooth raise and sometimes that lift can be a little “jerky” from what I recall ✌️

Will do. I’ve been watching tutorials on lifts on KZfaq but you are right. I will definitely practice a while before attempting any work to structure. Thanx

Nice ideal, but completely useless. In my area. Would never pass a spectrum. No way to get enough insulation in the walls aka ceiling
@okiehippiefarm
@okiehippiefarm 6 ай бұрын
I’m assuming you live in a northern area? I’m not an expert with insulation but you might check with Arched Cabins because I’ve seen some Facebook community discussions and believe there may be some remedies. Appreciate the comment ✌️
