As a guns enthusiast, I have a lot of respect for people who are keeping archery alive. Even though the bow and arrow have little to no place in the battlefield in this day and age, it is still a very effective hunting weapon. I’ve fired a gun several times in my life and getting the basics down is fairly easy. But archery is a different animal entirely.

I do both. The base principals are the same. It's the techniques and posture that vary the most. But posture, breath control, & basic "point & click" aiming are the same. The single biggest difference, I feel, is aim time on target. With a firearm you have all the time in the world to take your shot once a round is chambered and action cocked, and with a bow you really need to be aimed before you "chamber & cock" with near immediate firing on draw.

They always have a place it's a matter of the warrior not the weapon. In WW2 some dude went into battle with a sword, bow and arrow. Look it up. If you are "hunting" the enemy in a war a bow could work technically xD especially if those guerrilla fighters are lightly armored. However, guns are more efficient so I concede to you sir.

I do both actually, and i know for a fact that a bow can be as deadly, if not more than a gun (and very painful). Gun lovers usually dont got the jizz of the bow because of the fact that gun is easier, faster and more precise. You should check arrow heads from i think Mongolian arrows. Its pretty cute

It has been theorized that fighting Comanche archers created the necessity to develop the revolver. Because Comanche archers could fire 3 arrows in a second while hanging off the side of a horse. They needed to speed up firearms to compete, with the skill of the bow.

Regarding the Kate Bishop and Oliver Queen commentary, I tried that after seeing the same thing differently. The way I've done it is holding the nock between the thumb and the groove between my first two fingers, and then lay the shaft on the left side while keeping that pinch and sliding the arrow nock and pinch over the string---similarly to nocking with thumb draw except doing it on the left---and drawing right back. With the slow-motion footage yeah it's CG arrows and the arrowhead is a bit past the riser when showing that. But with practice and keeping that pinch you can do it very closely to that and very smoothly with a quiver on your back. That's just feedback from my own tests, I hope it's helpful.

If you slow the video down to .25 when Oliver is nocking his arrows, you can see that it seems they thought about how he loads them onto the bow. The arrow, which they did admit is cg, is on the left side of the bow the entire time, his draw hand opens as he nocks the arrow, insinuating that he is loading on the left and shooting from the right of the bow. Amell is also a decent archer, due to receiving coaching for the show.

At 9:35, he is not deflecting a sword/axe, when looking closely in slow motion you can see that its more like a spiked club. The club does appear to be metallic though, but Robin deflects the hit fairly low and close to where the opponent is holding the club, so the impact would probably be less compared to at the end of the club which would have hit with a greater force. The club also appear to hit directly on the front of the bow close to where Robin is holding it, so the bow is probably a bit stronger in that area as well. With those things in mind I think it could be doable without damaging the bow too much.

It is actually possible to do what kate bishop is doing....it bugs me when people say its impossible. You just havent thought about it enough. How you do it is you pull the arrow out of the quiver and you hold the arrow in a pinch grip between your thumb, pointer, and middle finger. Then you put the arrow on the shelf and as you do that you have the arrow on the left side of the string and instead of fliping your hand you just let the string slip through the grip of your pointer/middle finger side of the thumb, pointer, middle pinch grip. From there your hand and the arrow is in position the just simply pull back and as you pull back you nock the arrow.

Kate loads the arrow throughout the core of the bow… that is impossible. The way you describe involves more motion and dexterity thank just “the thing” we saw there so it’s a completely different experience.

9:51 Hmmm interesting observation, I mean looking closer it looks more like a club/mace that the crossbowman there is using. Whenever I watch this scene---and this is just my take on it, I'd have to look at it in slow-motion---it looks more like Robin's blocking the guy's arm with his own arm and pushing that aside with his fist/wrist with the bow just being in his hand so that gives him the leeway to shoot.

@@radicalreactions1633 spend enough time sending ordinance of any sort down range and you get pretty good at estimating distances from perspective scaling. The arrow rooftop sequence for instance, we have a good idea of the size of the skylights because the panes are very standardized (roughly 2ftx5ft) which comes to about 10ft wide (roughly 3 m) for the skylight, hvac control boxes need to be AT LEAST 5ft away from things like a skylight and line both sides of the skylights & appear to be around 7ft so there's another 14 ft (4 2/3 m), the boxes themselves are standard residential units at 2x2x3.5 ft for another 4ft or 1 1/3 m. Both of the archers need about 3 ft between them and the boxes to fully draw so thats an additional 6ft/2m. Judging from the perspective height of the box, Oliver is closer to 6 feet behind his HVAC boxes as it appears to rise to mid chest on him, not mid stomach. This gives use a tentative 12m distance. Since the camera shot is over her shoulder we can only assume she's equidistant from the boxes putting our estimated total to 13-14m. By the time she's deflecting arrows there's just her static positions with Ollie starting to fire the midpoint between their start distance at around 6-7m, and his last shot at effectively point blank of 2-3 m since his pace is about a 3ft step and he steps forward once with each shot. This puts her deflections at a decreasing range of 7 down to 3 meters. That requires superhuman reflexes This dude is a proficient enough archer he can earn his bread teaching people his techniques. He knows what he's talking about

I would like to come back on what you said about each archers in movies/series if you don't mind: -Kate Bishop is not shooting in a realistic way in that scene but there are other scenes like the car chase in which she shoots two successive arrows using the Russian "Dagger technique", so the reverse grip. I would give her more like a 3/10 if there is something to save^^. -Oliver Queen: What you say is true for biological bows maid of wood, bones and sinew. But it is not that much true for mineral material bows maid of Carbon and Fiberglass. My Assyrian bow (Jackal Archery) has been stringed for 4 months now without any problem because the main material of the bow is fiberglass inside the limbs and I shoot a lot. For the roof fight, a hunting/war bow is shooting a 600-1200grain arrows at 55-60 m/s so yes, impossible to dodge/parry an arrow at close range About armor, a hunting/war bow car go through kevlar, sand and water more efficiently than a 5.56mm or a 7.62mm bullet, it has been proved because the arrow is heavy, sub sonic and has blades so it is very efficient against "soft targets". While a bullet is blocked by these materials but will go through thick wood, metal or stone if there is enough energy, an arrow is almost always stopped by hard materials. -The Great Wall, just one detail that always catch my eyes in that scene, the first arrow probably hurt someone out of screen, nothing else to say XD. -Robinhood, we see during his training that he is using Bodkin tips for his arrows, they are specifically maid to pierce armors and to be retrieved on bodies. My problem in all of these scenes is that they always show a solo archer shooting multiple ennemies in a frontline which is impossible. The bow is a stealth weapon in solo, because it takes at least 30 secondes to be completely neutralized by an arrow due to bleeding.

@@radicalreactions1633 the arrow is going 60m/s. At under 30 ft there is literally not enough time for the visual data to hit your brain, process the data and relay the information to the appropriate muscles and for them to fully react. While you CAN block and catch arrows, it must either be at a distance of greater than 30ft or not be at full power. Otherwise you essentially need to know EXACTLY were that arrow is going to be and moving into intercept position *before* it's fired. Otherwise you're catching with your chest

It doesn't look like Arrow is holding the arrow on the left side and crosses over. It's too blurry to tell. It looks like his arrow is on the right side but from the camera perspective it is on the left. Just me saying but I refer to your judgement. Also, is it shoot arrows or loose arrows? I feel like shoot is incorrect as you don't shoot an arrow as you would a gun. Deflecting an arrow is impossible as you say but it's a comic book so I can let it slide. Deflecting with a bow may break the bow but swords have varying quality as do bows. (Robin Hood 2018 actor Taron Egerton was trained by Lars Andersen so fun fact).

I have over almost a million arrows shot within the past 4 years. Not to brag just to inform those interested in learning. Let me add a few things to that reaction. Yes the way Kate Bishop and Arrow draw and nock is done with an empty hand and the arrow has been digitally added. But it is not true that it is impossible to draw an arrow in that way and shoot mediteranian. Especially with a backquiver. (I tried it myself), you bring the arrow already down in a high arc, so if you now do that arc to the outside or the inside of the bow does not make much difference. You do not even have to change to that reverse mediteranian grip. It works surprisingly well, and with enough practice you could get quite a high rate of fire. About that Robin Hood movie, Well Lars Anderson was a special consultant for that movie, and that shows. As you see he is shooting botkins so pulling them from a body is possible as long as the shaft is not broken. About parrying with a bow. His bow has a metal handguard, espcially for that I would guess. That the stuntmen did not hit there but on the limb that is another issue. :) About storing a stung bow. Bows from modern materials like carbon can be stored strung. They do not suffer from the problem wood bows have that the wood slowly takes the shape when being kept strung. See compound bows, the glassfiber limbs on them are kept strung for the lifetime of the bow without any problems. Sure it is better to unstring a bow, but it will not ruin a modern bow if it is being kept strung for some time. Especially as his bow was in a case so sunlight, heat, humidity all issues that help deform a strung bow would not be an issue.

Hello Thomas, thanks for your input, it's very appreciated! The modern bow materials and keep bow strung is new for me. Thanks for letting me know. I only have wooden bows right now so this is my point of view. Can you send link to a video where is this "Kate Bishop" style of loading you mentioned? Interested! I know that Lars was a consultant for Robin Hood movie, and he did remarkable job. Robin really has metal grip so at this point he could deflect the sword. I reacted on the hot to the limb. Bow is dead, instantly :( Thanks very much for your comment!

@@CharliesRunningArchery Would have to make one, I just tried it yesterday, as I was curious if it is impossible. The way they hold the arm so far outside, it does not work. They draw with a wide arc to the outside that does not work as the bow is in the way, but if you arc from your shoulder straight up, you can easily fit the arrow on the inside of the bow Try it yourself, Think on the Robin Hood scene, they just missed hitting the guard, and though, who cares noone will notice :) Also not sure if that should not have been a metal bow. In a Forged in Fire Episode they had the contestants make a Robin Hood metal takedown bow (Season 5).

@@elbacon158 Mike I hear you though the Hawkeye example above is poor cgi. I'm not one to disrespect others archery styles. If the archer is being safe & hitting their target occasionally +, it's all good. Apparently I have a unique style (have a go/ internet taught), usually this is mentioned behind my back (from the peanut gallery) while I'm trying to shoot during an organized shoot. I'm a newbie to shoots. So that could just be people playing the distraction game. I'm rapidly developing the skill to tune it out.

I'd you tilt the bow forward you can fit it from the right side to shoot from the left...I'm sure with practice speed will come just like everything else...also I'm very hit or miss on your video your trying to sound like a master by rating actors who don't shoot archery in shows and movies that care more about overall ratings then accuracy

Commanche archers can shoot from the left very quickly, so it works. What does not work is putting the arrow through the bow to load. Physics would say one big no. I'm not a master, never presented myself as a master and if it sounds like I think I am a master, please accept my apology and I will focus more on my presentation. Thank you :)

You can't judge Hawkeye or Arrow based on our world. The physics of our world and the fictional world to which those characters belong are not the same. You say that what happens is impossible and it is in our world, but it is not in the world to which these characters belong. If what you want is to see a realistic archer, you would have to judge biographical films and series that if they have to be 100% possible, they would be based on people who exist or existed in our world. But judging fictional characters, whether in movies or series, makes no sense. Hawkeye is the best archer in the MARVEL and ARROW world. He is the best Archer in the DC world. Now with Legolas, he's not even human. His strength, speed, agility, and longevity are a thousand times greater than a human's. Judging archery in those circumstances also makes no sense.

@@CharliesRunningArchery They're saying you lack the knowledge to properly criticize the archery skill levels in these clips. for instance: 1) While yes in the shows Hawkeye and Arrow the arrows clip through the bow due to budget, that doesn't in turn make the archery style bad, that way of quick shooting is very real and very possible if you angle the arrow through between the string and the bow as you draw it out your back quiver. I'm an archer and I can do this, not as fast by any means but I can do it. 2) you can deflect arrows with ease and even catch them, you just have to watch for the release and judge where it will hit (It takes a lot of practice but I can do it against low poundage bows, I imagine for someone born into the league of assassins and trained from a young age to do just that would have literally no issue catching a high velocity arrow) 3) In the Robin Hood movie you will note the boiled leather wrapped on parts of the bow and the metallic hand guard. An archery who has trained for the scenario where you may have to deflect a sword would use those hardened and reinforced parts of the bow to block, especially the hand guard. It's important as archers that we don't just go "Nah that's impossible" on the internet just because we can't perform that specific feat. For instance I can't run and shoot at the same time but I know its possible, just gotta use some critical thinking. If you're talking bad CGI then that's fair enough but you can't say its impossible just because you cannot perform the trick, especially since nearly everything you said was impossible (with a lot of practice) is very possible. Just have to think a little bit more critically before criticizing. - my honest review of your review =)

Liked the video and it got me noticing the same wrong details in comic book cover pics of Green Arrow, his son G.R.2,Speedy&Robyn Hood from Grimm comics. In each picture I downloaded I see the artist knows nothing about archery they draw sometimes the characters holding the bow in the right or left hand with the quivers facing the wrong way, also drawing the arrows facing the wrong side of the bow like you see in the movie's and shows you mentioned lol. You would think a real fan and archer would write to the comic book artist and tell them their mistakes or maybe some have but their response would probably have said we can't get into too much detail about the little thing's when we're on a time schedule getting issues out before deadlines. I saw a documentary about comic's being made and yes they have to finish them quick but I think drawing a quiver&a arrow facing the proper side of the bow wouldn't take that much out of your time especially like drawing the line's on Spider-Mans costume in some issues. But anyway look up Robyn Hood on Google if you've never heard of her it's a good comic and it even has a fan made short movie here on KZfaq.
