Both Scorsese and Spielberg have been titans of the film industry for many decades now, but how did they gain such status? This video explores their origins from humble film students to heavy weight champions of the film world. Looking at key moments along their rise to fame, and how their careers form a fascinating contract when compared.

Love this. I think The Irishman is in dire need of a re-watch whenever I next have 4-hours to spare.

I never thought about it until now, really, but do you think that (despite DeNiro being a great actor), Scorsese might have benefitted from collaborating with a wider variety of main stars? Sure, sure, sure, in more recent years, he's gone between a few others, which he's subsequently also turned into regulars. Audiences might not flock to Scorsese movies due to association with DeNiro and the grim and grisly types of movies they were. Adored by those who adore them but not welcoming of newcomers or new ideas. Weak comparison, but think of the diversification of Edgar Wright once he got past the cornetto trilogy (his movies went from having little nods to other sub-genre moments to each film being completely within those different sub-genres). Maybe the point I'm trying to make requires more time and words than a simple comment! Haha

Interesting point, I think there’s two ways of looking at it; on the one hand Scorsese often works with popular actors who can generally attract audiences on their own (DeNiro, DiCaprio for example) and as such the frequent collaboration can not only help with the box office but also with the quality of the film, as the actor and director can bring the best out of each other. On the other hand, A diversification of cast will never be a bad thing, he seems to have taken a liking to Jesse Plemons, with a small role in The Irishman and now being promoted to the lead in Killer’s of the Flower Moon. Ultimately the type of character driven films Scorsese often makes lend themselves to a strong central actor, and if Scorsese works with those he knows well it will likely be to the benefit of the film in my opinion. Thanks for your comment!

@@ArcherGreen I think we've arrived at the point that I wanted to voice but didn't form correctly in my mind or come to the conclusion of until I saw your comment! That Scorsese is very much a centralised character kind of director and Spielberg's a world builder kind of director (even when he's making a movie with a centralised character (Indy, Oskar, the kid in Ready Player One etc), he's developing the, let's say non-diegetic world beyond that character, whereas I feel like Scorsese's movies develop the diegetic world which surrounds the character - which may or may not be the draw for the movies, depending on if you want to watch a movie about a person or a movie about a person in a world). Going back to the Edgar thing, once he stopped re-using Pegg and Frost (hey, the Cornetto Trilogy is untouchable!), he stopped telling centralised mini-stories of these paired character actors and started moving into a world of different open world stories (Pilgrim, Baby Driver, Last Night in Soho) that have a broader - or at least more varied - appeal.

Excuse me, but your statement about Scorsese in the 80s isn't correct. The Color of Money was a huge financial success, even bigger than Goodfellas.
