Archery shouldn't hurt. While many will go on about no pain / no gain, certain kinds of pain shouldn't be there. If you find yourself feeling this, stop before you cause or aggravate an injury.

IMPORTANT: Before I started archery I went to a physiotherapist, asking what would be the correct movement to tense the bow to avoid injuries. That is what came out: imagine you are staying in water with the level at your shoulder. Now, to avoid injuries, you must move your arms only on the surface of water, never getting low or high. He told me that tensing the bow from upside down and downside up is very heavy on our shoulders, and must absolutely be avoided. I followed this prescriptions, and even when my back muscles was exhausted, my shoulders and arms was perfect. I hope this will help

I recommend training with a stretching band. You can go trough the whole process with no risk of injury. This helped me refining my technique.

Wow. I have to say, that five years after retiring from competing (and shooting at all), watching this video is the first time that I have been able to watch archery content/think about archery only in a manner of relating to content without the bitterness of having stopped. Kudos, for your explanation, and kudos for doing what's best for you in stopping when you noticed the tenseness. As you corrected yourself to say that it wasn't pain, but tenseness, I swear I felt sympathetic tenseness in my left shoulder as well. I, too, was of the camp that if you're experiencing pain while shooting, something is definitively not right. It's hard to quit a FITA when you're in the midst of it, but I'd definitely say that physical reasons would be the best of the options to stop, as you did. I've happened across your channel quite by chance (the reddit /NewTubers, though this is my casual viewing channel, not my creator channel), and I'm really appreciating how you explain things, both for a new/non-archer, as well as a seasoned archer. Well done, and thanks for creating content that I could watch with only nostalgia, not pain. :)

It is always a good sign when you know when to stop, before you get a real injury. but i was wondering Nusensei, do you ever do a warm up of some sorts? i was having lots of stress on my shoulders, but lately i have been using a small warmup routine before even unpacking my bow. since doing that i have a lot less stress in my shoulders and even during the day i feel i have more movement in my shoulders and arms.

I had a strange experience a week ago, I was shooting outside in poor weather so I had 2 layers of long sleave clothing, it was a bit restrictive. After about 12 arrows suddenly i had this really bad sharp pain on the inside of the right elbow, the hand I use to pull the string. Took the extra layer of clothing off to free up my arms and it was fine again, was really cold but it didnt hurt

I had to take a break for over a year bc of a stance fault I had developed in a stressfull time with little training. Never force anything and lower your draw weight if you lose strength. I messed up a muscle in my holding arm that took a long time healing.

I wish I'd had an instructor when I started archery. He/she would probably have told me all that and I wouldn't have needed shoulder surgery. There are no asiatic archery instructors nearby. So I had bad form. I was over-bowed. And I insisted on fanatically long and intense practice sessions. Now I focus on good form. I shoot a 35 lb bow. Practice sessions 30 to 45 minute. And now I'm a right-handed shooter. I really need to get it right this time.

Hey, could somebody tell me whether it makes sense to get a 66 Inch traditional Recurve bow for "traditional" target shooting or should I stick to 62/64 inches at 1.75 cm/5.9 feet? Does a larger bow give you any advantages? Thank you :)

I did something to my right shoulder shooting a 50lb compound. Can shoot it no problem but I kept shooting even when it became a struggle to draw, now my right shoulder has been fatigued for 4 weeks and is healing slowly. No major injury I think but the power still hasnt returned to normal yet

I had a major problem which i thought was my shoulder.. i had to go down in limb lbs from 45 to 40 and then to 35.. because i didnt want to stop shooting.. i had this issue for a year.. i finally got a deep tissue back massage for a completely different reason and all of a sudden i was fine the next day.. put my #45 on my riser and its no problem. I even shot a few groups with my friends 70lbs ben Pierson longbow with not even the slightest pain or discomfort... so..in conclusion... you could pull a muscle in your back and thinknits your shoulder and not even know. My shooting got better by 50% instantly because i could pull through the shot with no pain or compensation. Get a deep tissue massage from a good physical therapist

I always pushed myself to my limit when I trained. I would shoot until I was sore, and then some telling myself it was because I wasnt good enough to shoot for a long time yet. I went down to my local club to shoot after work, and put a few arrows in the target, and I felt an immense pain in my shoulder. I had dislocated it, tearing my labrum and rotator cuff in the process. Since then, I haven't been able to shoot and it breaks my heart. Please, please dont overdo it because if you break yourself it's hard to come back. Its worth noting that I was shooting 55 pounds.

i litterally had mine pop out everyday for over 7 years and had to have three surgerys. Trust me you wont be shooting that poundage but go back to 20 or 25 pound, use a mouth tab in which you pull the string back with your moulers and increase as your neck gets stronger, don't fuck up your shoulder as much as i did, it gets expensive lol. It's a massive learning curve but alot of para archers shoot with out mate.

I used to be such an Archery enthusiast, I could go all day! 2 years on from open heart surgery, after a split sternum, two collapsed lungs, liver n kidney function (at the time) gone through the floor, my upper body strength and stamina ain't what they used to be. I'm barely able to make half-a-dozen shots with my 45" Compound Bow. I've had to dial the poundage back as well as far as it will go. I wonder if I'd be better off with an Olympic style recurve?
@djinn201
@djinn201 5 жыл бұрын
You could try recurve bare bow or bare traditional it's cheaper and you can add on equipment to most bare bows, stabilizers sight clicker, I use 29Lb is enough for now southwest archery spyder xl 64 inch bow 28inch draw also a 62inch size 24inch draw from 25Lb up to high hunting powers. I'll say this using recurve dont be discouraged if you take longer than compound to tune to arrows lenth, spine, grain weight of arrow head. I still have to get arrow length to match my draw and spine to match power with shorter arrows but i have great fun still.
@goldenarrowfbeye
@goldenarrowfbeye 5 жыл бұрын
I signed in to reply to this - I'd say try a Olympic recurve, but I wouldn't bet on it being 'easier' or you being better off. If anything, a recurve is considered more difficult on account of having to hold the full poundage (load) at full draw, rather than in compound passing 'the wall', and then being reduced to... 35% of the draw weight, I think? In terms of endurance, stamina and strength, on average a recurve will require more. That being said! I would recommend that you start on a very weak, beginner recurve - 15-18 pounds, no more than 20, and honestly I'd say that's pushing it, too. Work your form, gain the stamina/strength back while not pushing or struggling with it at all, and go from there. It will take you a while, but I've always preferred starting folk off on recurve to go back to compound at a later date, as I find form easier to instruct/change while shooting recurve. Wish you all the best!

maybe those short recurve bows with thumb draw has put more strain on your sinews and ligaments
@mortenjacobsen5673
@mortenjacobsen5673 5 жыл бұрын
@Martin Hodge they use different muscles and creates strain or lack of it in different places . trading the strength of the forearm flexors and 3 fingers grip strength for all the strain on the thumb and greater work load on the back . a doctor should be consulted to determine the best way to avoid injuries and asses risk based on the archers general "fitness"

@youtubecommentguy8871

Orange zone lmao I got that as my first bow It functions and shoots fine, pretty heavy and sturdy feeling, you can basically attach all the sights and stabilizers on it as you wish. It is however plastic, in fact the whole bow is plastic. As a basic take down bow, you cannot use other bow limbs which makes increasing poundage impossible, as far as this bow goes. I am not sure wether initech or the company that owns it even makes more limbs. It’s a great practice bow, it has good weight, it won’t break easily, you can put attachments on it and such. But keep in mind, if you’re just getting started with archery, 20 pounds or less is where you should approximately start. If in doubt, Samik sage is the bow you should check out. But to each of their own I guess

FortniteBoi2019 - listen to the advice given from your coach, then try to visit a pro-shop (archery store). Speak to them, they should measure you up, draw, poundage etc. Try the equipment but do have a budget in mind. Your first limbs especially are going to be the first thing you change as you progress. Spend the money on the riser and makes sure you’re happy and comfortable with it, this will outlive a vast majority of your other kit, including the arrows. I for example did a beginners course, asked the coach for a rough ballpark of what I needed to look for. I took that to the shop, they measured me up and gave me a good 3 hours on the kit before I bought it - my set all cost £318 with a set of arrows all in, I was expecting much more than that!! Also, speaking of arrows, get something cheap and cheerful to start, you will break / damage these as you progress and grouping gets better. Much easier to deal with a £4/£5 broken arrow than a £40/£50 arrow!! Good luck 👍

I have also had my shoulder dislocated a few times. Archery dose not bother mine. That being said, my injuries are older and I have worked hard on rehabing the sholder. Start with lower poundage. I will also say that compounds bother me more than traditional bows. But that may just be because I have been shooting Trad only for a few years now. My GF, who had to have her rotator cuff reattached, shots a compound. She shoots low poundage, keeps her arrow count low, and takes breaks. She is new to the sport though.

@@sreejiths6297 you are developing bad habits that are going to be difficult to break once you are capable of drawing your bow. Also, you are much more likely to get hurt shooting a bow with too high a draw weight. The lean is hard on your spine, and the weight is hard on your shoulders and every other part of the body involved.
