Archipelagos is an early 3D strategy / puzzle game where you have to prevent the spread of corruption across a series of islands. This is done by eliminating various objects around the islands while avoiding the corruption and reversing it with a limited supply of energy. It's an interesting challenge, but it's let down by the fiddly controls. Despite that it's one of the better early 3D games I've played.
"Overlooked Oldies" is a series of let's play videos of retro games that I somehow never played back in the day. Many of them will be suggestions made by subscribers.

JimPlaysGames True, I really like Proteus. It's great that there's such an active indie industry atm. But still, big developers aren't going to task risks on weird/new games like they used to. Just imagine if Bethesda poured millions of dollars and hundreds of staff members into an Archipelagos sequel; that would be cool to see.

I actually bought this game for Amiga back in the day. I remember it later being given away free as a magazine cover disk. Spent many hours playing it. For such a simple concept it was surprisingly addictive. The eerie music certainly helped set the intimidating feel. Controls were always kinda fiddly. The trick is to not get too close, then click the squares, not the objects on the squares. The copy I have runs well under an Amiga emulator on PC.

Ah, Archipelagos. Free with Amiga Format 24, which included the text prologue - one of the most god damn sinister things I ever read as a young man. The game was spooky enough with the haunting soundtrack and deadly things stalking you from the very start, but that prologue....christ. ADDITION: Went hunting...here we go! amr.abime.net/amr_popup_picture.php?src=amiga_format/magscans/af024_1991_07/026.jpg&c=95571&n=1&filesize=297446 I wasn't even into double figures in 1991...

I used to play this game a lot. None of the levels were buggy but then my copy wasn’t cracked. I still have the original box that the game came in. I’m not sure I ever got past level 60 because it gets really challenging quickly. The little cabbages give you energy to build land. You need to click on the tile under each object rather than the object itself, so aim for the base of the obelisks. And yes I love the atmospheric music. The only game music that beats it is the death guitar riff on Shadow of the Beast II.

As it turns out, AF left out the monster descriptions included in the manual: YOUR SOUL CAST INTO ETERNAL TORMENT... So how do you die in Archipelagos? Well, if an arboreal tree comes too close to you it will infect the land that you are resting on and your soul will be cast into eternal torment. Also if you don't destroy the Obelisk within ninety seconds of collapsing all the stones the Obelisk itself will destroy you. Altogether everything seems too simple, but there are things that we have not told you about... TWISTED FORMS OF THE NECROMANCER... The necromancer first appears on Archipelago Thirteen. A ghost of the twisted and mutilated bodies of the Ancients, the Necromancer rises from the ground and wanders along the shores of islands, taking with him the land of the Ancients - piece by piece. Beware that a Necromancer does not claim a piece of land near you for then the land that you rest upon will turn to sand and you will sink and join the mutated Necromancer. BLOOD EGGS... The Eggs of Blood first appear on Archipelago twenty. When an egg is ready to hatch, the sky will grow darker and with a mighty clap of thunder and lightning an Egg will hatch. Eggs can spawn one of two monstrosities. From the first kind of egg will pour forth the poisoned blood of the Ancients, spreading like fire until it has covered the whole of an island. The other kind of egg will eat away at the island itself, spreading outwards until it has consumed the whole of an island. THE ISLAND OF LOST SOULS... The Lost Souls first appear on Archipelago twenty-five. The Lost Souls of the Ancients manifest themselves in the form of a whirlwind and roam the archipelago in search of nourishment - your soul! Any kind of contact with one will result in your soul being pulled into the Lost Soul for all eternity.

I used to play this when I was young. I found it again several years ago and those arboreal trees seemed to have it in for me and would scare the willies out of me. The idea was creepy as was the music. In terms of having trouble moving to close to things, I think the manual did say you float about a meter off the ground and can't go right up to something.

I loved this game on the ST. Didn't get all that far with it but it's clear from reading various articles since that there were some broken levels. The reason for this would have been the fact that the levels were pseudo randomly generated. 'The Sentinel' was another game where levels were generated randomly and that had similar issues. Unfortunately the programmers didn't put anything in place to check the integrity of the generated levels. I'm working on a version of this game for Gear VR and have written a landscape generator for it in just an hour.

I used to love this game, mainly for it's concept and the really creepy music. It's a shame your version was bugged. You'll probably not be surprised to know that it's already been remade, I think it was for IPhone or Android, can't remember now. No idea what it's like though. Incidentally, which emulator do you use, and do you have a decent preference file that you can point me too? I have way too much trouble trying to get anything to work properly. Great vid as always Jim!

I do remember seeing this one in screenshots in the mags and thinking it looked amazing, graphically. I bet the guy came up with a nice, fast routine for drawing chequerboards. Apart from that, it doesn't look like there are any actual polygon graphics in this game. The fixed angle means that the copper comes into its own for the graduated shading. Who knows if it would have been better without the 2D sprites within the flat shaded environment? It might have been the best compromise for performance and looks. The sprites might have been more jarring if you had completely free movement. The soundtrack sounds particularly good. I think I'll try to find a copy of that. Virus is another game with infected blocks in a 3D landscape. I wonder if there was something you could do to change your start position on the "broken" maps? I agree with your point about the control system being the biggest barrier when playing a lot of old 3D games. A lot of them would be much more enjoyable if you could retrofit WASD + mouse or similar. It would make a nice mobile remake.

JimPlaysGames Yeah it sure does. There are remakes for a lot of these older 3D cult classics from the Amiga days. Like the dozens of Elite Classic remakes, the remake of Zarch aka Virus that's actually better than the original. There are even some Freescape engine games that got remade. I hope I don't sound too old :)) only 24.

Interesting game, and thanks for explaining what's going on :) Another enigmatic 3d game is Starglider 2 (www.lemonamiga.com/games/details.php?id=1208) - have you considered covering that? It's a bit more forgiving when you don't know what's going on because you can just fly around and shoot stuff, but there's a cool adventure game hidden inside it.

@JimPlaysGames
@JimPlaysGames 9 жыл бұрын
Chris Shaw ah quite possibly that. It said it was cracked though so I don't know if it's a piracy thing. Probably an emulation issue given the unusualness of the game.
@lurkerrekrul
@lurkerrekrul 9 жыл бұрын
JimPlaysGames Nope all the cracked copies are broken. When they cracked it, they missed the data for the hand-drawn levels, which is why they look so messed up. It's just using whatever random data it finds on the disk to try and build the level. There are good copies of the original online, but they'll take a couple more steps to use. I'll post the information below. First, I wanted to comment that the reason you're having so much trouble clicking on objects is that you don't actually click on the object itself, you click on the square that it's on. That's why when you tried to click on objects in the distance you ended up moving to them. Because the square was so small at that distance, when you placed the crosshair on the object itself, it was up high enough that you were actually clicking on the square BEHIND the object. Move to a few squares away from the object and then make sure that the crosshair is the green part of the square at the base of the object before clicking. Also, since there's a time limit once you destroy the last "node", always leave the one closest to the obelisk for last. That way you don't have to go across half the level to get back to it. Now, for a 100% working copy, go here; www.theoldcomputer.com/roms/index.php?folder=Commodore/Amiga/Games/SPS/a You will need to register (free) to download any of the games. Download the version named "Archipelagos (1989)(Logotron)[0627]". The US copy works as well, but uses a much larger batch of passwords to start the game. It's easier to use the European one. I have a plain-text copy of the US passwords if anyone really needs them. Anyway, these are all disk images created by the Software Preservation Society from original disks. As such they are in IPF format, which you will need an additional library to read in UAE or other emulators. To get the library, go here; www.softpres.org/download If using WinUAE, just download the archive, unpack it and put "CAPSImg.dll" in the WinUAE directory. From then on, it will automatically recognize IPF images, even if they're Zipped. Now that you have a working copy of the disk, you will need the passwords to start the game. You can find them here; amr.abime.net/issue_180_pages Click on page 28. Note that you *MIGHT* be able to transfer this game to a real Amiga. Currently there's no way to write IPF disk images to a real floppy. However, since this game doesn't have any disk-based copy protection, I see no reason you can't create an ADF file out of it. To do so, you'll need an Amiga emulator setup with a hard drive. Boot the hard drive, mount the IPF disk image in one of the floppy drives and then run an ADF program like TransADF to read the disk and create the ADF file. You should then be able to transfer this ADF file to a real Amiga and write it back to disk. At least I *THINK* this will work. Back in the day I knew someone with an original copy of the US version and I don't recall having any problem making a working copy of the disk. I just couldn't use it until I hand-copied the red pages out of the manual and typed in a few thousand codes! I hope this helps. :)

Was so frustrating to watch because you kept trying to click on the object rather than the SQUARE it was sitting on. You can only interact with the squares of the landscape, not the sprites of the objects. The click detection is fine. You just kept always clicking on the tile BEHIND the object and then going there, at which point you were too close to see it.
