Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union, died aged 91 this week.
In March 2022, Tom and Dominic recorded a mini-series on Gorbachev, the fall of the Soviet Union and the subsequent rise of Putin.
We’ve stitched together the first two episodes from the series into a longer special, which charts Gorbachev’s early life, his vision for the USSR, its subsequent collapse, his relationship with Yeltsin, and how this all gave rise to Putin’s Russia of the present day.
So, if you've liked what you've heard and would like to listen to the third and fourth episodes in the series, click on the links below:161. Yeltsin, Economic Chaos and President Putin - apple.co/3q9ha0s162. Putin's Russia - apple.co/3cM3mpE

... A very valuable contribution to the culturalization of masses, as they used to say in my place of birth when I was little... Very well researched and intelligently presented, with the tandem format greatly helping with flow and dynamics... As for criticism, I would point out what I see as excessive mockery of historical characters (particularly Dominic, who gives continuously the impression of considering himself irresistibly funny - he makes the joke, and he's the one laughing); the analogies with staples of contemporary life, usually ironic, are sometimes, forced, a bit awkward... ...In this particular one, I find it surprisingly naive to focus (as regular people in casual conversation do) on Vladimir Putin's "mind" (his KGB past and all that), when it's a lot to say about the politics inside the "alliance", from 1990 onwards and its contribution to the actual state of affairs. I happen to be from a place which should have no issue with Russia if it wouldn't have become a part of the "alliance" (and, as a consequence, in great, heavy debt towards the U.S., due to weapon purchases). Now, Russia was made hostile, the country entered the generalized arm race... and we can talk forever about VP's mind... Overall, though, a well-done podcast...

Anyone else looking for the old episodes, they aren't on KZfaq. There is a link in the video description to some Apple podcast thing, but the link isn't working for me.

For the children of the world: the reason we are here learning History on youtube on our pocket supercomputers or hexaflop desktops is because of Mikhail Gorbachev. If it wasn't for him we would all be frozen under a nuclear winter. The problem is people who wanted things to go faster not only got a "it's ok honey, let's cuddle" but also probably the worst economic crisis in history. From 1991 to 2001 there was an excess death in the adult population of Russia that is estimated to be between 2.5 to 3 million people. Japan lost 2.2 million in WWII, 2.5 million died in Korea, 3 million died in the 17 year long Vietnam Conflict. Now ... to the young adults who are our hosts: do your homework and go understand why Putin is who he is, acts like he acts and why he's not the only one responsible for the War in Ukraine. A hint: Boris Johnson is involved. So ... remember ... 2.5 to 3 million people died in 10 years because of hunger, drug abuse, alcoholism and suicide. The estimations for the whole former Soviet Republics is from 3 to 7 million. (number for Russia: paper found on the NIH site. For the all former Soviet Republics: a PhD thesis I found somewhere - take it with a grain of salt.) Since you are in the UK and have paid you TV license, I recommend going to the BBC and watching "Pandora's Box" and "Trauma Zone". "He doesn't question the mission" is not what you suppose you would say: it's what you said. Putin used to read Lenin and Marx ... better than any US president since Kennedy. The only country that is exceptional is the US - a country with a mission and part of this mission is to kick the fallen enemy and salt the land he lived in.
