I use ziploc bags for smaller wips because i worry about moths getting to them. I know its not the best environmental strategy, but bugs are real.

I use the hibernating feature in Ravelry. One year, I pulled out all my WIPS and entered them in Ravelry. That was a huge weight off my shoulders, and since all of these had been stored on a closet shelf, I no longer had to avoid looking at that side of the closet. Over the years, I have gone through those and made decisions about some. Either I was going to finish them (a cropped sweater that was beautifully knit) or frog them. Some I gave to goodwill, along with the remaining yarn. I sold a set of Moccasins I could no longer wear to a ravelor for the cost of shipping.

I'm all for this strategy. I'm a notorious works in progress gal in all my creative endeavors, probably because I love the planning and process aspects the most. I simply use the HIBERNATE button in Ravely and have a basket labeled the same in my space. I LOVE how Ravelry pushes it to the bottom of your projects tab so it's removed from your mental space and makes room from what's bringing me joy at that time. Once or twice a year I evaluate those projects. It was kind of you to provide a method/ tools for those who this doesn't come naturally!

I have what I call a "bin o' the WIPs." I know most of the patterns in there, but I'm just getting back to knitting after busting out a laceweight beaded wedding shawl in 3 weeks and needing a break. Pulled out a pair of socks... and couldn't remember the pattern! I found it by putting filters in my Ravelry library: "cables," toe-up," etc. Don't be me. Label your WIPs!

I love the mesh produce bags for storing projects. You could transfer stitches to barber cords to free up your needles. As a cheaper alternative to barber cords, I got a tube of hollow rubber cord and cut it to length.

Great idea! I wish I was that organized. I was overwhelmed by all of my projects that I purchased yarn for and patterns that I have yet to purchase yarn for. Then there are my non-yarn projects! In December, I sat down with 5 sweater quantities of yarn and printed off 5 patterns. I just have the patterns out. Almost finished #4. Sure, I've hit a low point in each project, but it was cured in 24 hours of non-knitting time. Since the last is a summer sweater tee, I'm so motivated to finish #4 and start it. Once these are finished, I'll continue the process by picking 5 small summer projects - socks, mitts, and perhaps some frogging. Repeat again and again. Yes, I do get distracted by new pattern releases and the wonderful finds of content creators (most definitely suggested by Tayler at WNH 😂) so I place the pattern in my Ravelry cart for a future date. Good luck to everyone in search of their WIP solution. Last but not least, that picnic bag is the best. Any possibility you can find out where your mom got it?

I do a lot of this on Rav, but I like the idea of bringing everything out and looking at it all at once. I think I'll do something similar to this with my stash though! I'll go through everything I have plans for, note those plans, and then make decisions for everything I don't have a project for.

I do as well and if you log your yarns in Ravelry it will already have your project listed in the yarn stash record, so no need to re-type that info and it's ALL free capability if you use their website from a PC. Now I will admit I'm going to look into Knit Companion for the chart merging capability alone.

I can see this also being very helpful for people who have very different weather too. Like it's too hot to keep working on a large heavy wool sweater or blanket and you want to archive it until it cools down again

I have a WIPs trolley, so active WIPs go on the top and then anything languishing goes underneath. It’s like a physical “folder” for my WIPs and can only hold so much which helps manage the amount of WIPs I can have at any one time… top level is like my “desktop” and I can see everything to remind me to work on it. Everything else is “filed” below 😊

I have a Google sheets doc to track my projects throughout the year. If something is being archived it gets a paused status and it gets moved down to between my in-progress and planned projects. I have columns for start and finish dates, category of craft, materials, and patterns. It's definitely not made specifically for archiving but it does the job while also keeping active, finished, and planned projects in the same space all out of my brain.

I think I’d use clear plastic bags, not only to protect from dust and bugs, but you’d be better able to see at a quick glance what’s in the bag. Also, the easiest thing to do might be to use hibernate in Ravelry.

I don't really need to archive my projects. But what I need to do is archive my patterns. Because I have 2 binders full of paper patterns and every time I want to work on a project. I gotta find the pattern. So if I archive my then when I'm looking for a pattern, all I have to do is grab the current project patterns to find the pattern I need and it'll be so much easier to find. So you gave me a really good idea, to archive my patterns not necessarily my projects. Now I admit I stopped watching the episode to make this comment and I'm not even halfway through the episode. So if you talked about archiving patterns, I haven't gotten that far yet. And if you haven't well maybe that could be an idea for another podcast.

I use Ravelry for all my projects. Still learning the ropes over there but so far it’s working. I also have many current and future projects saved in my Pocket Crochet App. They also have one for knitting but I find it easier to put all my k&c into one app. We really can have too many apps imho. I do like this app stores things in my phone so I can access it easily without the need for internet. It’s especially useful for the row counter. I can still use it during flights in airplane mode and it still saves my progress without WiFi.

Very interesting information. In a couple of weeks im going to have a few days to myself, which I'm calling my Stay-at-home Knitting Retreat 😃. I'll use some of that time to archive! One step further, though....as well as freeing up project bags, I'd love to free-up all the needles that are languishing in these WIPs! I'm sure I've ordered needles, not realising that I already own them but they're stuck in a project somewhere 🙄

Be fun to think about disposition of finished objects too. Many times I’ve made things as a teaching mechanism. I’ve learned about construction, color contrast and blending, practiced techniques and improved tension, used new material (wool, silk, mohair). As a result of my own classroom, I have some pretty things. I really don’t have a matching inventory of people to give them to, though. I’d love to figure out what to do with them. I did recently put my question to a neighborhood listserv and got an answer (local churches, schools, hospitals) but often they are looking for specific items (hats for 6 year olds, baby blankets in acrylic) that I don’t have. It would be so cool to find great places for donations.

But have just finished last week a reorganization of my projects that are in what I consider my “active” zone., which is just besides my chair in the living room. I’m keeping 4 active projects 2 socks, 1 cardigan and 1 tee shirt. Socks just always travel, cardigan and tee shirt were in WIP but I just finished a pullover so the other 2 tops can come back up to active. And, other WIP’s will see the light of day so day soon and I’ll try Canva for those. Thanks again 🎉💕

I think Canva is a wonderful idea for people who don’t utilize Ravelry to the fullest. Personally I rarely have 3 projects going at the same time so Rav is great for me. Also I keep a “journal” for all my projects. For each finished project I attach a ball band, piece of yarn, and a photo. I’ve also been noting grams in & out monthly.

This was such an interesting video!! I do have to admit that it was an almost voyeuristic experience, because I'm a very monogamous knitter, so having multiple wips is very unlikely and when it does happen, nothing goes into limbo, because if I decided to work simultaneously on more than one thing it usually means I need to meet a deadline for the project I started later LOL I learned quite a bit from this video, though!

Like it! I rarely have more than 2 things on the needles (though I might have one or two projects more for 'fixing' or blocking/weaving in), I won't need an archive for that. BUT I can see the use of an archive of my plans/ideas so that I can forget about them till I am ready for them. For example, I have one idea for improvising my own needle/cable storage because I can't find something I like commercially. I already bought the yarn, but there are many ideas and no fixed plans and it gets in my head every single time I am looking for my next project and messes with my focus. It would be great to notate everything I've thought about and hav it parked out of my head till I can clarify it. I might add the 'fixes' for unsatisfactory finished objects there too, since I am always procastinating on them anyway.😆

I love this!! I have WIPs that are definitely hibernating, I should go through them with this system. I have one question about the storage. You have them in produce bags, which are open weave, and in a basket, which is GORGEOUS, but not airtight. Do you have anything in there (lavender, cedar, etc.) to ward off moths? Or do you not deal with moths in Nevada???

I understand why folks who don't use Ravelry need other methods for tracking projects, but I'm really curious why someone who uses Ravelry needs another method. The project page in Ravelry has all of this information plus it links directly to the pattern and the yarn in your stash. I'm hoping you can talk about why you find this method superior. Maybe I'm missing something?

@@AnnG27 Personnaly, I use a row-counter app to follow all of my WIP. That is easier for me as I can see the pattern, and counting my rows. Or I use some Word doc/Excel sheet to keep notes. I hava found out, what to do, to make the yarn useable again, bur one I dont know... the yarn is washed an blocked, so the fiber is now relaxed before i knit. What happens, if I knit this with a needle recommended in a pattern? Wjat happens, when i wet and block this again? Will it stay the way I knit it? Because before wetting it, it was smaller. Do i then have to knit smaller than the pattern recomments (the patterns gauge is blocked). Did I explan it, that anyone understands what I mean?

Wouldn't having your projects on ravelry do the same thing without all this extra time and effort? Taking projects out of its project bag seems counterproductive and a waste of time. Minimalist and simplify is the best route in life. All that time doing this could have been better spent working on a project instead. To each their own.

Why pay for the version of Knit Companion that allows extra notes when you can just do it on Ravelry for free? And there are already headings you just fill in- simple. I just start a new project page when I cast something on and update as I go. Voila all archived for free, in the same place my patterns are stored and where I can see other knitters projects and read their notes about what I’m making. Think there’s a bit of reinventing the wheel here Taylor

I have only two WIPs at the moment one of which I am about to frog, but I like how you organize yours. Its akin to how I organize my stash.

So, here you talked about archiving WIPS if we have too many. We'll I have the opposite "problem" I only have socks (and by socks, I mean one pair) on the needles. I would like to have more WIPS going but really don't know what to do or how to choose what to add to my WIPS. Any suggestions?.....😊 Thanks.

I like to have a portable, preferably simple project for carrying around to appointments and such, and a larger or more complicated project for home. Sometimes I need a simple project to destress from work and other times I want the mental challenge, or I want the finished project badly enough to put in the extra mental effort and possibility of frogging rows.

I did something similar earlier this year, where I picked the wips I was going to work on in the near future and the others I set aside in a big bag I don’t use.

That's a great organization system. Love it.

The multi color pillow on the chair to the left in your living room. Did you knit that? Can we get a good look at it? It looks so pretty. I think I naturally work on an archive mind set. I’m either keeping things in a current wip or in an archive stash. ❤️

I LOVEEEE Canva! I use it for making flyers and presentations in college all the time! I find their themes so much nicer than Microsoft or Google
