Arctic Rolls Royce Shadow makeover. Part 1. Just how bad is the rust on my £4k eBay Rolls?

I've sent my Rolls Royce Shadow 1 I bought off eBay for £4100 to Motorfix in Witney for a little bit of fettling as its extremities were looking decidedly tatty. I wasn't going to video the process but then I posted a photo of the work on Twitter and it went nuts. So here's a video on what's being done..

I agree, it doesn't matter whether the car is worth it. The only point that matters is whether you're prepared to spend the money on it. There is more emotion with cars than 'non-car people' might think.

Yes, but the RR Shadow will always be remembered for its stunning good looks, far better-looking than anything produced under the new management! Harry has turned the Shadow's weaknesses into its' strength, without Harry, we all know the unfortunate ending..................And why the BBC do not offer to buy the rights to the great Arctic Trip, I will never understand!! That model has always been my 'dream' car. In reality, at almost 75, I drive a '71 Electric Super Beetle. I do not miss all of the maintenance, such as oil changes, tappets and breaker points to think about........... It would be nice to buy a really cheap Shadow, knackered engine and transmission..................... and then convert to EV and see that everyone would want one!

The Artic Rolls clearly brings so much enjoyment for the family as an “occasional” so it’s great to see you’re putting something back into it. I bought an immaculate last of the steel bodied XJ8’s a few years as a daily for my wife to waft from Oxton to West Kirby and back for work in a bit of luxury and style, it serves as our occasion car too, so no expense spared with meticulous maintenance at Bob Bate in Birkenhead.

I missed this first time around - but what a treat. I concur fully with the travesty that has befallen Park Lane. I drove up there a couple of weeks ago and cars are now relegated to just one lane of the original four lane 'drag-strip' as I also remember it - dodging in and out between buses and coaches and then a last minute lane correction to get the right entry point for the Edgware Road exit off Marble Arch. Now car drivers must take their place amongst buses (1 lane) coach parking (1 lane) and cycles (1 lane). The 20mph speed limit is just the raspberry on an already very soggy, damp sponge. Hey ho. A beautiful restoration and some great descriptions of the car's sheer 'waftability'. Thank you.

I really like the attitude with which you're approaching this project, Harry. I am 100% in the same position with almost the same car - a '69 model Silver Shadow. I got into it for almost the same price, and it needs about the same amount of work as yours. What you said about these cars not having much value is true, as is what you said about them being about the memories. My car belonged to my, now deceased, Uncle for the last 20 years, and it is a rolling monument to him. We're looking very much forward to getting it roadworthy again and making another generation's worth of memories in it! Thanks for the videos of the Rolls and please do keep them coming!

The good old Artic Rolls receiving some well-deserved and needed love. Is almost shocking to see how much of it is missing but totally worth fixing it because as Harry said “these cars are about memories” and this one definitely was instrumental to create those epic videos about that trip to the Artic. This RR, Harry and his wife bravely soldering on against that merciless cold in their quest for the northern lights is something we all will remember fondly. What an adventure that was.

I think the biggest appeal of this channel is even though Harry drives some mega expensive cars, somehow the content remains "relatable". At the end of the day, he's just "one of us".

Harry, I remember when you added this to the fleet, cannot believe it was Oct 2017. I’m not into tweeting and what not, so really happy to see the old girl getting some TLC as it’s my favourite from your collection.

Wonderful to see this. That Rolls is such a characterful thing, all the more because of what it endured so very nice to see it getting this attention. And it just is such a good looking car already, imagine what it will look like in the end.

Obviously our Harry has a bit of spare cash available so the other restorations we've seen on this channel seem to be almost no holds barred 'money no object' efforts. The Rolls Royce on the other hand is being done on the kind of budget many of us lesser mortals have to work with on our own humble classics. To my way of thinking that 'real world' element potentially makes this job the most interesting of all the restorations and I for one can't wait to see what can be achieved on not very much money.

Yep £5k for body work is the sort of figure most of us would be limited to, without Harry's deep pockets!

Darren is a top man with a pencil, was he once a carpenter? 😄 I’m sure he patten panels are the right size, it’s just the “hand built” car that’s wrong.
