We take a close look at the Milwaukee 1/2" impact wrench to see it's build quality. I'll try to fix it, but It's worn out after 300 hours of heavy industrial use. We'll see why at the end of the vid. The mechanism itself is very robust, but it has a couple weak points that made this gun crap out. My DeWalt has about the same amount of time on it. It doesn't hit as hard as the Milwaukee lithium ion, but it's ten years older.

I have to say that most of the parts that you refer to as metal injection molded are really compression molded. It is a much simpler and cheaper and much more common way of making powdered metal parts. They are made in a press with a die, upper and lower punches and pins for the through holes. A feed shoe slides over the cavity, the lower punch is lowered in the die and the powder is gravity fed into the die (usually with shaking or vibration to help it flow better), the shoe retracts the punches close in the die, then the upper punch rises and the lower punch raises to the top of the die and the part is pushed off by the feed shoe. Rinse and repeat. No plastic binder, much less shrinkage and no need to force the powder itself under pressure. I worked in a powdered metal factory for 8 years and machined tooling for the last 2 years there.
@mito6532
@mito6532 7 жыл бұрын
The yellowish epoxy on the windings/commutator you are pointing at^2 5:20 isn't for balancing the armature, it's called "gel banding". Used when there is very high speed or radial flex in the armature shaft that can fatigue the fusing of the windings to the commutator tangs and a broken wire. You can see a few seconds later some brownish putty stuck on the opposite end windings that is for balancing.

As someone who repairs electric tools... The way to check them; Is it making sound? no = Check battery, then brushes then wires & trigger/circuit boards, . All the other components are mechanical so if it isnt making sound (or smoke) in 99% of cases its those three things. And never trust customers when they say they've checked things... I had one customer that came in with a flashlight and said it was broke and he tried everything... He didnt change batteries... In the case of this video though, I would look closely on the brush holder/brushes, seems like that is the likely culprit. Usually when you bang on it and it works its a loose/bad wire or the brushes.

There is no smoking just that smell, is this normal break-in or should the tool be returned?

Picked up a Will-fauck-yee oscilating cutter from the trash bin at work, just a couple of months old. The wire from the switch to the PCB was broken right at the solderjoint, probably from metal-fatigue. Put a new wire in and I now have a semi-crappy free tool :) even had a battery in it, and I also found a second battery.. but no charger :(

Aleksander Øyen As most of the battery packs have internal balancing circuits, it's definitely worth a shot. Even completely unbalanced, a couple charge cycles won't hurt anything. It will definitely charge it just fine, as long as it supports a pack with as many cells as the drill uses. The chargers and extra battery for $50 isn't a bad deal either, considering that's probably just under the retail price of some batteries alone (depends on model). Good luck. :D

Sooo... those brushes don't make good contact because the abrasive dust has glazed them over, and the dust hozed the bearings, thus making a wonky wear pattern on the brushes, thereby increasing the glazing on the brushes. When you love tapped it with a hammer, you chipped a wee bit of the glazed dust off the brushes, allowing it to reseat it's happy self on the commutator and as if by magic, she cranks over. Replace bearings, fan, and dress the brushes with a file - and clean the whole brush assembly with a wee bath in some isoprpyl alcohol, a little tooth brush lovin, and she should be good to go. As for how to replace the bearings? torch on the worm gear and pulley wrench I reckon would do it, but you're gonna have to redo the temper on it to make it worth anything again. And cryogenically freeze the shaft, then reheat that worm up to about 400F, and press it back on to the exact same dimmension. Minimal repair - dress the brushes, clean the commutator, and clean the brushes after dressing them - reassemble. Or - HAMMER TIME =)

I got the newer version of the dewalt half inch impact and I love it when it's time to work on the car. The 6ah battery gives it maximum oomph, compared to my 4ah and 2ah.it's definitely a difference in the big tool on the different batteries. Ordered a 9ah to use mostly on it. Recently acquired the Dcd991 and 791 so I need more batteries anyway. But ready to throw my dcd780 in the trash because the gear selector keeps splitting into two pieces. Going to try jb plastic weld on it first. I put it on all the corners of my batteries since they've cracked around the screw holes. It works beautifully. It can't be removed unless I grind it off there I never seen anything stick to plastic like that.

+J Gaskill lol, ya know, it figures that the first time I _ever_ do this, someone would try to ruin the fucking fun. If you think other people emulating a special thing _to the person that created that special thing_ somehow makes it _less special_, I don't know what to tell you. The guy's hilarious, and I genuinely spit coffee on a keyboard and ruined it because I'd never heard the "degrees science" shit and wasn't expecting it. Had some fun with the telling of the story to the guy, and here you are, trying to make it out like I just told you your favorite superhero hates you. Further, how anyone can come to the conclusion that someone doesn't have "their own personality" because they emulated someone else's schtick while making a semi-humorous comment in a semi-humorous context is fucking _dumbfounding._ Hey guy whom I've never talked to, whom doesn't know me, and clearly doesn't realize this is literally the first time I've ever done this after reading comments _just like mine_ for over a year now (and getting a chuckle out of them every time): You don't know shit about me, so your judgments are unwelcome. My dad was an ironworker we have a 3/4" one I never needed. It is nice to know it is there when you do. It is a plug in one much like an old 1/2 inch one I also have. I do have a half inch pneumatic and dragging out air hoses is the only bad thing about it. Whether or not mine is a good one I do not know but it is not a Harbor Freight tool and for what little I use it for it should last forever with a drop or two of oil before use. The more I watch your channel AvE, the more my suspicions of the lack of quality control are confirmed when it comes to those super cheap Harbor Freight tools. I don't have any problem with their tools but I don't expect a precision tool or one that will last a long time if I ever dare to buy one from that place. Although I am not always using my tools I at least like the piece of mind that I might expect with a known brand of tools (not Black and Decker).

I’d love to see a comparison between all the different rattle guns. I work in the field and have used a lot of different guns, and I decided to buy Dewalt on the account that my home tools are dewalt, and nobody else has one so they won’t steal my batteries, but after owning them for a while I’m actually convinced they’re better than any of the other gear out there.

@@Anonymous-ed8om haha, man that was years ago, I’ve changed my tune since then... I’ve got about 20 fucked dewalt batteries, things just fall apart, I’ve had them literally fall apart mid-bolt. the top plate stays on the tool and the rest just drops on the ground. They are not built for industrial use, they’re home/hobby tools. Milwaukee is built a lot tougher, but they just don’t seem to have the performance, that is, they consistently under-perform compared to others....

@@Anonymous-ed8om i fuckin’ hate Milwaukee, they really underperform. They’re the toughest out there, but their performance doesn’t match their robustness. Dewalt perform better, but they’re built weak and flimsy, pure chinesium. Makita are middle of the road, but there’s no support or service anywhere... there’s just no tool that ticks all the boxes. If Milwaukee got Dewalts motors they’d send all the other companies out of business. But they have all this one-key crap and the power setting crap. It just makes them useless in the field... and I haven’t found a Milwaukee yet, that can spin a 6mm drill bit through the breakthrough without slipping, worst chucks in the universe...

Factory I used to work at used the same impacts for 2 shifts daily and they tend to last about 2 months before they burn up we also had a couple makitas that were more heavy hitting (quicker) but tend to not last as long fwiw... From the halfassery and smell I assume that the driving IC's burnt out in both impacts

We had panasonics on the line also, They last about a season. Not sure what model they were but they were some fancy impact with a torque setting that was set by QA with a tiny remote. Good work horse if you ask me but I assume these were purpose built just for factory environments being it had a remote and all.

Milwaukee has a 5 year warranty on their M18 and M12 tools. Had to send in an m12 hammer drill that would not engage a few months back, and they replaced it with a completely new drill. Very, very happy with their service. The warranty is on the tool, and no receipt was required. They used the in service date on the serial number.

Hi from Australia M8, I noticed how black the commutator was. One of my power tools had intermittent issues like this, I used a brass wire brush to polish my black commutator to shiny copper again, remarkable difference, I also filed my brushes square again, not on an angle like yours. Hope this helps.

@vanamburgben
@vanamburgben 7 жыл бұрын
ThomasHaberkorn it hits the side of the anvil, that jolt sends the hammer exactly upward enough to clear that part of the metal, then it turns 180° and does it again on the other part of the anvil. Since it has two sections to do this, both hit simultaneously and it gives a balanced force. There are vids on YT that show this force in action.

I have an older 1/2 inch HF Earthquake. Excellent in every way. With a short 3/8 inch hose, it has no problem powering through anything I can throw at it. If you put a long 1/4 inch hose on it, it looses a lot of umph. It's way better than every other half inch impact I have ever used, electric or pneumatic. Rugged, heavy, dependable, fast and powerful.
