We are a few years into the $70 video game era. Have you purchased less game because of this?

Same! It has to be affecting gamers spending habits when games are more expensive.

No game right now or the near future is worth $70 ...make fun games then they wouldn't have a problem selling it and make lots of $$

Yea I agree. For me Zelda was worth the money but it could have easily been a $60 game. Obviously all subjective but yea I agree with that. Hard to believe Elden Ring was only $60.

The games are way too expensive and especially with the poor selection of games compared to the games that were available for ps2 and ps3

Geez, I paid $75 to buy DuckTales for NES in 1989 at Hammond's Toy Store on the top floor of Crossroads Mall in Salt Lake City. It was a slightly unusual cost for a video game at the time because it was sold out everywhere else at the time, but I was a little kid, and it felt worth it to me. Here we are in 2024 and I'm watching a video of an adult literally speculating that $70 is too much to ask for these miracles. By the way, I have been a major part of making major well known video games as an artist for my entire adult life. I have no understanding why people are reluctant to pay as much money for video games as we were paying for NES games in the 80s when we were little kids and had far less money available to us. You realize that we, kids of the 80s, were routinely paying $50 for NES games. You are aware of that, right? What is it with you people that you have so little respect for video games? You're not phased by the fact that many of these games cost upwards of $300 million to make? That does instil some respect for how much work went into their creation? $70 is nothing. I strongly have believed for years that an average triple A video game should be $300 - $500. These creations are extremely fun, and they are miracles. And they provide so very many hours of fun if you have the right attitude about them. When I was a little kid, I made every sacrifice I could to buy the video games I did, and I am so glad that I did. I had extreme respect for video games. And I still do.

I’d happily pay even $80+ for certain games if they launch fully polished. If cyberpunk 2077 launched in the state that it is in now (even excluding the DLC), I’d drop $80 for it. Let’s be real here, nobody wants to pay more for games, but all the while game prices have remained stagnant while game budgets have outpaced inflation. The quality games that we want are going to cost a higher price at some point. Games went from $50 to $60 dollars some time around 2007, right? Well $60 in 2007 is closer to $100 in today’s money. Games without micro transactions need to cost more money as production value increases. It’s not sustainable for the industry to hold onto a $60 price point while more money is dumped into the games. It is a difficult balancing act, though, and the increase in potential customers since 2007 can perhaps make up for the reduced margins.

Great points! It’s definitely a tough situation to navigate through these times. I’m very interested to see how the games industry moves forward.

Such a high % of modern aaa games are terrible. There’s a few good ones that come out every year but there’s so many terrible,over-monetized, extremely buggy and not even finished games that release all the time it’s ridiculous. And i love some great open world games like the next person but too many of them bloated and filled with boring and repetitive time waster quests. They need to shrink down the sandboxes to a more reasonable size and not keep going bigger and bigger with a high percentage of meaningless content. I think if they would make smaller maps more dense and impactful (quality over quantity) that would cut costs somewhat for development and gamers would be happier and less burnt out on them. And instead of monetizing game mechanics and skins. Just release periodic dlc areas in the same way that FO3 and New Vegas did. That would be a great formula to keep gamers happy and actually want to spend Extra money on a game . Which in turn would keep companies happy by keeping the cash flow continuous longer. While actually providing meaningful content not fast travel points, time savers(which you wouldn’t even consider if games weren’t so bloated with meaningless activities and quests), skins and other quality of life improvements that should be in the game from the beginning. These companies are so greedy and only care about milking every dollar from us gamer cows instead of making quality games that people would actually want to play for the long haul if continuous story dlc and outfits and weapons and skins that you could unlock naturally by just playing the game . Which in turn would cause more positive word of mouth to start and potentially bring in more people to purchase the game who probably wouldn’t have normally. They treat their devs terribly and pay CEOs reckless amounts of money who most of only care about profits not quality. AA and AAA games should offer at least physical pre-orders for games so they don’t produce too many. Because I’m one of the diehard physical media people who refuses to buy digital games unless it’s indie games or digital versions on deep sales of my most played physical games so I can give the discs a break and keep them on a shelf. ( And the physical games need to be the full base game on disc(s) or cartridge(s) not just a download code or access key) that crap is infuriating and just cheap and lazy. And everyone i guess chooses to forget that when digital games first started they said that they would be cheaper than physical. Which was a lie they have been the same price or more from digital deluxe editions the entire time
