I recently watched a velocity test of 7.5, 10.5, and 16 inch. The 16 was 3200fps and the 7.5 was 2400+. 2400 is more than enough to make a hole.

Most shooting encounters are going to happen with 20 feet. You better be able to justify shooting somebody 100 to 400 yards away. Is that person still a threat? Can you leave the area safely?

556 does not have any chance of Spaulding when it goes under 2500 fps. Poking holes can be done with a BB gun. A Spaulding round will dumb all its energy in a target. Poking clean holes in people is not a very efficient use of this kind of round. This is why 300blk out is gaining steam as it is much heavier and does not rely on Spaulding like in a light and fast cartridges such as the 5.56. If you are going to shoot a shorty for home defense buy the heavier ammo like 77grain otm

I was in the market for a pistol caliber carbine so I watched videos on 4.5" pistol barrel and 16.5" carbine barrel and the results were substantially different but by no means was either weapon without merit. I watched the same kinda video with the AR in .223. 10.5" vs 18" and again yes there was more power and better accuracy out of the 18" but the 10.5" was still a perfectly valid weapon punching a big hole at moderate distance.

@palehorseone4 жыл бұрын
Well said. With a quality construct, especially, as you learned, the right barrel, cycling has proven to not be a problem. Shorter barrel ARs will always be more "violent," but recoil alone can be tamed with the proper spring/buffer, especially buffer. Even then, I have heard smarter gun guys than I say they even use the standard carbine (3 oz) buffer with ample function. Many places and sources, not the least of whom is ballistics expert Dave Emary, have stated that 2500 fps is the minimum lethal velocity for a standard (FMJ) .223/5.56 round. At that or above it tumbles and breaks up in human flesh. As you pointed out, a 7.5" barrel's velocity doesn't even come close. Yet, the ARs multiple round capability in a very short time, coupled with its accuracy at short distances, largely mitigates that. No one likes getting shot, even once. Multiple, well-placed rounds WILL be amply lethal. Having said that, I have a lot of experience with AR pistols. 10.5" is my shortest, with a carbine length gas system. Not at all the same. My fascination with 7.5-8.5" barrels grows, however, and I have done my homework. I have only now to purchase the parts and build.

I believe a lot of people miss the point...for one, most people expect similar performance from pistols to rifles from the same round like XM193 or M855 ball....it don't work like that...sure you can use them as practice ammo, but when it comes to self defense, there are plenty of rounds that will perform and devestate a target out of an AR pistol...and since I've owned mine, I have found it to be very reliable, even with over a 1,000 rounds with no malfunctions, even with steel cased ammo. I run Black Hills 77 grain otm in my AR pistol as a home defense round...very nasty with lots of wound potential and is effective at lower velocities out to 100 meters or so vs a standard 55 grain fmj or 62 grain green tip which will need a higher velocity to fragment within it's target at those same ranges. The only reason Ibsee owning an AR with a longer barrel length is for longer distant shooting, otherwise anything for self defense wise, at those ranges an AR pistol is more than adequate to get the job done and still a lot more powerful than your common handgun calibers.

10.3" has been determined to be the absolute minimum barrel length for the 5.56 to be effective and tumble and fragment and still be reliable, with a 7.5" barrel the round wont tumble and frag it will just poke holes.
@TheFullNeilson6 жыл бұрын
Ok so I partially agree with some of what you have said. It might not tumble or frag the way it would with a longer barrel providing more velocity. That does not make it ineffective or unreliable. I can assure you the ability to poke 30-40 holes in something is going to be plenty effective. Especially if those holes are in certain places. As for the reliability I think that is simply a matter of making sure everything is setup correctly. I have a 10.5 inch upper i will be testing shortly. I will post my findings for reliability and get back to you. Thanks for your comment and have a nice day.

There's a lot of truth to what you said here. I think you hit home when you said an AR pistol is an "addition", not a "replacement" for the rifle. I do see a place for the PCC's too. Me personally, I like a "system". For example, I'm a Glock guy (like 'em, or not). I might carry a G-26 on my person, and have a bag close by with a G-34, an AR-9mm and a fist full of magazines that fit all of them. I also carry a G-27 on me, with a G-22, a Sub-2000 and a fist full of 40 cal. mags in a bag, which is another "system". But I also have a 10.5" AR-15 pistol (223/556) that has its place among other AR's, up to a 24" barrel. But all of my AR's chamber 223/556 because I don't like buying a bunch of different caliber rounds. I'd rather buy a lot of one kind, when it comes to defense. But again, that's just me. So, I guess I'd say that I don't like brussel sprouts, but I don't knock those who do. Good video with a lot of truth. Thanks.

Another video it went through level 2 body armor at 75 yards. So yes its deadly. Mine is strictly for home defense and truck gun. Yes a 12 gauge is best for home defense but if there are loved ones in the house I don’t want the spread to hit someone I love. I need pinpoint accuracy in the home. The ONLY issue with AR pistols in home defense is over penetration. The velocities even a 7.5" barrel can achieve will cause serious over-penetration. If you live anywhere you have neighbors, this immediately becomes an issue. It's a super effective round. But there are many options that also very effective and far more tailored to home defense. I think the absolute ideal setup would be a pistol caliber carbine, especially an AR-platform for those already used to AR controls/operation.

Yes--cautiously. If your lower is purchased as a "pistol" or "other", not a rifle, you must use a brace (or nothing) on it. Adding a rifle length (16" or longer) upper is permissible. Just DO NOT also add a conventional buttstock, or, in any way, modify the brace, which is an NFA violation. In general, you can make a rifle of a pistol (retaining the brace or no-stock), but a rifle must stay a rifle. This is based on info I have received from multiple expert sources. But please, check for yourself to be absolutely certain, since you would have to be stuck with consequences of bad info/choices.

Thsts excatly what they're designed for . I see all these dumb asses talking about how the velocity is " ruined " in an AR pistol . Ummnnn no it's not ?? If you're shooting at someone 8 to 15 ft away in your house and its moving 2100 feet per second out of a 7 inch barrel, well that's pretty fucking devastating. Load them with hollow piunt or soft point 5.56 ammo and you're going to skull fuck someone.

gun laws should be the last thing on our govs mind right now, but because they lead as such shitty examples, its hard for me to get caught up in silly specifics on shit at a time like now over everything else that actually makes sense, which by the way really shouldnt even matter to begin with....i say make what protects u, if youre a law abiding tax payer arent you good for that much trust in return? this gets really old waiting for "them" to change, if we dont start living regardless of what they always have to say we will worry our lives away, what is prob left of them for alot of people in the few years to come. theres common sense then theres bullshit. these folks r bullshit
