Sharing my experience at 2021 The Other Art Fair Dallas: how much it cost, what the event was like and my advice for those participating in art fairs in general.
One clerical note: I mention in the video that Saatchi Art takes a 30% cut on sales, but that figure is in fact 15%. However, that does not account for the upfront costs which are significant.

asking 30-50% for all your sales +admin fee + application fee is fucking ridiculous and obviously predatory for artists, thanks for the information

Nuts there using the artist, and they artist is basically paying to be sold

Well asking 8-10k for a painting of lip gloss is predatory. So it works out for both parties.

I don't think you know what predatory means @@phillipstroll7385someone who can drop 10k on anything frivolous I don't think is in a position to be preyed upon by some painter lmfao

Galleries charge 50% which is why an artists art doubles in price at galleries 🙃. So 30-50% at a art show [i understand only 5 charge, theres more than 40 shows a year] is an opp to find leads. Tho you can find leads by ads online too. It depends on where you want your marketing $ to go to and what your purpose is.

I gave up on art fairs years ago... having to pay so much money for the booth, no help to install, exorbitant commissions and the list goes on... not to mention the commission from buyers referred later from the art fair. I understand the venue needs to be paid for as a fair split between the artists depending on the space they are occupying. Artists barely make back their costs on a good day, for the time, effort and skills... and many more don't make a thing.

This was so interesting! Thanks so much for sharing all your valuable knowledge on the subject 🙂. I've not done any paid art markets yet, just free shows as there seem to be a lot of free events here in France to artists to show their work. I admire your tenacity and I'm sure it's paying off! How long would you say it takes to build up a career as a professional artist? Thanks, Jane

So helpful, thanks for your insight! The part about finding out why people there don't like pink, oof, that broke me a bit. Definitely not the scene. Hopefully the next one is somewhere where the girlies get it.

Given what you've told me (and I'm glad you did) is to avoid doing Saatchi fairs. I follow representation agreements to the letter but the fact they want a cut of commissions is something I'd never agree to. I think the thing I'm getting into is I have a set base cost for pieces. Being a bit of an outsider, I'm treating these websites and venues like stores. So my pricing varies depending on what the commission is. Could be a 15% mark up at one place. Or if it's 40% then it's a 40% markup. The venue or space had their opportunity but once that period ends, it ends.

it seems like Saatchi is used to receiving those percentages with their online sales and are continuing that at their in-person events. I was surprised by it to. I know purchases through galleries or distributors/agents often require sharing a percentage with those people, but i wasn't expecting that with art fairs. It sounds like Saatchi thinks of themselves more as a gallery/distributor even though they run more like an art fair or market. Very bizarre and surprising, especially with such a high initial cost for space.

I was into this scene fifteen years ago. Boy, have things changed, especially with International shows, and internet sales. I dropped out when artists first started to make websites, and these international shows were primarily for galleries only. It would be interesting to know what are "conservative" money towns, (like Dallas), and what are more liberal money towns. (MIamI?, San Francisco?)

Thanks a lot for your honest opinion and a lot of details. I specifically was looking for this info, glad I found you. I am from Dallas, btw, got approved for the next show. Seems like I am going to skip the opportunity. I thought paying for booth is the only expense you have, which is very high to begin with, extremely high, I should say. But, on the top of that, you have to pay percentage from sale? That's too much. P.S. I am "older"....and using pink a lot in my abstracts, just saying.

Yeah. But if its to get leads while selling then it has benefit. I would go but not focus on sales. Just go to meet people. I also agree about the pink. And I think she just didnt meet the pink lovers in TX, theres a whole state of people there 😊

Thank you for all the good info! I get it that the buyers were largely looking for a certain type of art, but don’t assume most people didn’t like the pink. Older women often have granddaughters! If some of the attendees were decorators, I would think they’d have considered your series for girls’ rooms or their younger, more hip clients. Hopefully they filed your info away for their future projects and you will continue to see a return from all your efforts!

I mean, it doesn't sound like she's assuming "they don't like pink," rather, it sounds like it was made very clear to her by the lack of sales and the comments people made that the art she brought was under appreciated by this market and the collectors and buyers encountered this time, unfortunately.

I've lived in Texas my entire life, in every corner of the state, and have yet to visit Dallas. I don't think I'll ever be doing that if all it takes to spook them is the color pink.

Paying $4000 plus commission? That’s predatory! BTW I have done lots of art shows over the years…some higher priced, but certainly not $4000. That is outrageous.

At that cost, why don't a few artists get together and rent out a big space in a good area and open their own gallery? It would probably be more unique and interesting. Those big art fairs at least to me feel like libraries inside of parking garages.

I would never even consider paying a "commission" for sales at a market/fair. Charge an entry fee and get out of the way. An art market/fair treating artists like a gallery is insane. Life is hard enough for artists. Support markets run by fellow artists who understand that and run the greedy predators out of business. Sickening... obviously no hate to the artists to attend these!... but screw those event coordinators.
