12:45 that resonated with me. I'm a shit golfer, and one day I hit a 6/7 iron out of the rough and I didn't feel the ball strike. I felt a bit of the grass, heard the swish of the grass and club and thought I missed it. But it was one of the most pure shots I've ever hit. Ball/Grass mark absolutely dead center on the ball

@@KaiserVonWilhelm1 I just find that once you are used to playing blades it is just too easy to strike clubs that have more forgiveness, hence I personally tend to get a bit lazy, and at the same time try and whack them harder because I can. @@SuperSeveexactly! I learned with blades and stuck with them ever since. I can't tell you how many times I've had people look at my 20+Year old Titleist 690MBs and think they are impossible to hit. They aren't. I mean, if you're serious about actually improving your ball striking, you've got to make the effort but use blades instead of those score improvement irons sold as "game improvement". I’m now 55, had both hips replaced, lost swing speed, but still play blades (Miura KM700 5-PW). I tried to convert to GI clubs (JPX 923 HMP), PD clubs (TM P790s), and didn’t care for either, nor could I hit them well (I have trouble with larger headed irons). So, went back to MP 221s and they were awesome…but, sold them to get a set of Miuras that are absolutely brilliant irons…I also own/play two other sets (T150s and MP223s). The Miuras aren’t much shorter than either…my miss is usually thin/fat…the benefit of blades is your front/back miss is much smaller than with GI clubs…I may lose 5-7 yards on mishits…with GI clubs, you have more of a 20 yard spread front to back…my last round finished with a 125 yard par 3…I hit an absolutely pured PW that flew 130 and spun back 15 yards…just felt like pure butter…the entire bag feels the same and surprisingly forgiving…

I switched to Titleist mb 620 last year after having played CBs my entire life (29 years old) and i'm so glad I did. They go roughly 1 club shorter than my previous set, but thats actually a good thing for me since I had a huge gap in length between my previous PW and the 52 degree LW. Now that gap is much smaller, like it should be. I've had several people mention how good my irons look but "aren't they hard to hit?" The answer is not really, I don't find them harder to hit and they feel so much better. Will never go back to CBs again tbh.

Playing a blade is similar to driving a manual car. We know automatics are forgiving, but there's something about the feel of a manual that makes us drive them. As much as I'd like to hit the line I wanted, there's a fun feeling to knowing you have all that control. So when you do hit it straight it's super rewarding.

NO! Blades are NOT dead, Rick. In fact, they are more playable and, surprisingly, more forgiving than they have ever been. Through all the conversations about blades, the overriding presumption seems to be that everyone plays golf to chase the lowest score possible, and that's just not the case. I play with some blokes that couldn't care less about the score, they just want to hit 'magical' shots and play big draws and cuts and stingers and links style bump and run from 200 yards out. If they manage a handful throughout the round, they go home happy. I'm somewhere in between - I like to play well, and the score is one measure of that, but how well I strike the ball, or chip or drive on the day is more important. And the most important part of golf for me is loving the tools I use, even though I'm not technically good enough (i.e. a consistent striker) to warrant them. So, I play Wilson Staff blades in the short/mid iron and CB in the longer irons. I love playing golf with them, even if my score isn't the best it could be. That 'feel nothing' feeling of a pure strike is worth all the lost 10 yards on most of the other strikes. It may become smaller, but I think there will always be a market for blades. I hope so.

I was 9 and I got some nice Mcgreggor Tourney irons from Goodwill. I pounded away in the pasture out back of the house like crazy. My Dad said he would let me on the golf course when I could hit the ball respectably. At 12 I shot 98, my first round of golf. It got better over time. When game improvement clubs started coming along, I immediately went in that direction, and I have NEVER considered blades again. At 65, today I am a 12 handicap. I hit very few irons because I have inserted so many fairway woods in the bag. I think I can get a few more points lower on my handicap this summer. I see blades as a players club, and by player's club, scratch player or better. Your mileage may vary.

The Blueprint T is really really good, performs extremely well and the fact that its so easy to blend in with the other sets (Blueprint S and the i230's) gives everyone more options. The Blueprint T is turning out to be one of my favorite irons off all time, they arent even that punishing on mishits (they still punish you, but not like you might expect). Great review, Rick!

@@Kdpeters80 Not really. They have different designs and the Wilson specifically is a toe weighted one. It helps make the iron more stable and the center of gravity more central on the face as opposed to towards the heel. It’s decently forgiving for being a “blade”. I saw the new Blueprint irons and had to have a set. So, I flew out to Scottdale Arizona to the Ping fitting center. Went through the process and even though the fitter started out wanting me to be in the cavity backs, he recommended the blades with the DG 120g x100 shaft and midsized grips. Also recommended to split the set and went with the cavities in the 6,5,4. I wish I would have bought all blades. The 6,5,4 are now in the closet and my Srixon Zx7- 6,5,4 are in the bag. Fitters should have a short and long iron to test during a fitting in my opinion. So, for me, the blades are very much alive and well. Blades will never die, they're too good looking, I choose all my clubs based primarily on their aesthetics. All of us can hit blades, but the marketing departments have made us scared to even try it. As handicap golfers, our equipment plays a part on our handicap index. If you want to play blades rather than GI clubs then your handicap "might" be a shot or two higher, but you won't be any worse a golfer, in fact you might even be better as blades encourage you to strike the ball properly.

A well struck ball takes off so beautifully and feels so good. Fades a draws are easier and I get better distance. Played a forgiving iron set as a rental when on vacation and I hated the feel all through the round. People buy them and give up too soon, long before they would get any benefit.

I'm using a combo set with blades PW to 8, 7 to 4 being "cavity" back (the quotation marks are because the cavity is so shallow it's not really affecting much, methinks). In my mind, my set is "modern blade lofted" as the 7i is 34° and the PW 47°... that makes the Ping "ultra modern", I'd say. My idea of "normal blade lofts" is 35 or 36° for the 7i... yet I know that in the 70s blades were coming with a 38° 7 iron in general! Benefit of these "weaker" lofts is that you have a chance to hold the greens when it's dry and you have just so much more control!

I recently did a comparison on my LM, pitting blades against modern “PD” style irons. 3 contenders in each category. But, the big caveat is that I controlled for loft. Roughly put, I was largely hitting 7i in the PD category and 6i in the blades. Spoiler alert, there’s essentially ZERO difference in performance of shots that are reasonably well struck. The goo-filled irons aren’t magically longer. Any difference in ball speed was within the margin of error. Carry was within a couple yards between them. Things like apex and spin were basically uniform across every head. Dispersion was also very similar. And, I could “work the ball” equally with all of them. The only tangible difference was forgiveness. On poor strikes, the modern PD irons were less punitive. Keep in mind that I’m scratch. So my misses aren’t as big as a typical weekend hack. Still, the forgiveness of modern PD irons is why I’ve finally retired blades after 15+ years. Because I’m exactly the type of player who’ll benefit from them the most. Yet, a lot of players of similar skill to me either refuse to accept, or simply don’t understand this reality. It’s like a pride thing being able to say “oh, I play blades.” Who cares. I play for score. And for single digit or better player, a modern non-blade is absolutely the way to go.

This is a very interesting video. Thanks. I have always felt that one issue with blades is the shaft. If you have the right shaft you will hit the center more often, right? If not, you will have the impression that blades are very hard to play. Also, isn't there something to be said for smaller heads, in that they are easier to square. As I understand it, some people have trouble squaring big heads (think some Pings).

I’m 18 hcp, I have some Srixon blades in the bag. I dislike when people say that they aren’t helpful for high hcp. The feedback I get from every shot is so helpful. I’m trying to get better at hitting the ball not trying to get a better score

Play whatever you want but it's objective fact if you play a more forgiving iron you will play better. Don't lie to yourself and say you're happy with a 96 when you could be shooting 88

I still play blades. I have an older set of Wilson FG-17's that i started out with, then upgraded to the Cobra RF copper blades. It's all I've ever played and whenever I try clubs with larger heads or cavity backs it just doesn't feel good to me. As a gearhead I do like testing out and learning about all the latest and greatest game improvement stuff, it's fun. But I think with blades, it's an acquired taste - not for everyone.

I play blades still I tried to go to a players iron and still went back to a blade. It’s the head size and length what I love and the feel of them. The misses are very small but the workability is what I look for and want more than anything. I can’t use player irons that are 2° strong in loft

I’m bout to pick up a 2nd set and I think I’m going to go Avian blades. I just discovered Redbird Sports in Seattle, WA who make their own clubs and their blades are gorgeous. I can’t believe I only just discovered them. Rick don’t know if you’ve ever heard of them but would be a really cool review as they are a super small but very cool club fitter / manufacturer.

I keep flicking back to my P730’s in the short irons… they seem more precise distance-wise, NEVER long, but a mishit IS short. They seem easier to strike off firm or links turf, but when it’s soft a strike high on the face with moisture = a HUGE drop off

Played MacGregor Muirfield irons 2-PW since 1988 to now. Handicap never higher than 3 in 35 years. Nothing better to replace them with so no, for some people blades work. Especially on tight UK links turf, the narrow soles fit perfectly and the height of strike on the face is central. Modern clubs strike low in the face from links turf, steeper decent angles are needed which isn’t good. Each to their own, it’s only a leisure activity 😂

i think because you can get the hollow body irons that look similar to blades like the takomo 101s or p790s, that's why noone is playing blades anymore unless they are very sure of themselves

For golfers that are competively the answer is yes... since technology says cavity/muscle backs are cheaper to make and more effective. Realistically no, people still use what they have but people dont buy them unless they are really use to them. Save folks 15 mins.

I wish I could play blades. Do you think over time if you were using just blades you would get better at ball striking or would it hurt your game too much? In my head I try to think aim small miss small when I'm playing but with the bigger forgiving irons its hard to visualise when there's so much real estate behind the ball.

I have a set of P7MBs with DG X7's and they feel great. I'm no robot, but I can hit the middle 95+/100 times. I would guess that my handicap is around scratch, but I can shoot better. The thing is blades and players' cavity heads aren't really that much different anymore. I would also say I notice a lot more forgiveness going through the turf after the strike and divots don't get too deep.

I broke 100 and shot 95 for the first time in my life. I was using 40 year old thrift store hand me downs until I bought a set of Mizuno blades used on Ebay from 2008. I dont hit the center everytime, but the way they look and feel is worth any potential worse score for me. I feel mentally I am better because I love the way they look and feel, and when I dont hit it well I know exactly what I did wrong.

Playing mizuno 221 p-7 then 223s 6 5 4, in the longer irons i dont see any need for blades since you rarely want to work the ball much to anything with longer clubs, i want my long clubs to go in a straight line and not loose yo much carry on misshits. Eith the mbs the thin shots dont loose that much distance and if you fat it bad enough bo club will help you :p.

I agree, blades are not dead. My current set came out in 1968. I strike them better than anything. Yes I sacrifice distance sometimes but I also tend to avoid trouble. I chunk the wider sole clubs. The only thing is that I pull out my 5 iron to other people's 7. On the other end I love my 2 iron.

My first set of clubs were the Nike vapor pro blades. I didn’t know any better and they were cheap on eBay so I bought them. I could never understand why they were so hard to hit. I would even let my playing partners use them, and they were unable to hit them as well. Five years later and I’m golfing with someone who actually knows what they’re talking about and they asked me why I’m playing blades, and I finally did some research and realized I don’t have the skill level yet to use them.

Still rocking the Mizuno MP69s 🙌. Blades are already more forgiving than the blades from the 80-90s. Compare a set of those blades to the ones today. You’ll see how much bigger the club face has gotten. The wrong people try to play a blade because they think cos it looks good it’s going to help Them and they think they expect they will gain distance. Go for the p790 or some other hollow blade for that. If you strike the ball quite decently then I don’t see a problem with someone using them.
