my guess for 'wider lanes increasing crashes' is that having everyone further apart makes them feel like there's more room for error so people drive less cautiously.
@luke_cohen1
@luke_cohen1 Жыл бұрын
That's partly it but there's another thing we haven't taken into account: wider lanes means less lanes on the road itself. This makes it harder for slower drivers to move so faster drivers can pass them since everyone has less lanes to work with. Plus, the global population's median age has increased over time and we all know the issues older drivers cause on the road. This had lead to greater speed disparities on the road and has caused more accidents and traffic jams as a result since faster/busier drivers get a lot more pissed off and reckless. A two lane road shouldn't be a hassle to travel on but it becomes one when a 65-75 year old grandma going 5-10 mph (8-16 km/h) under the speed limit is at the front of a line slowing everyone else down behind them. The angrier the drivers behind them get, the more likely they will do something drastic to get around them and that will increase the risk of accidents if that driver isn't calculated enough to make such a maneuver safely.

Check out “Confessions of a Recovering Engineer” by Charles Marohn if your interested in lane width among other road safety things
@neruwu
@neruwu Жыл бұрын
That's part of it but additionally the smaller the lane the faster your brain thinks you're going. So on a smaller road you will subconsciously drive slower than on a bigger road because it seems to you that you're going much faster than you actually are.

Yes, the longest postwar cars ever were the 1974-76 Cadillac Fleetwood and 1975-79 Lincoln Town Car, both 233" long, and the frightening 1973 Chrysler Imperial, at 235" long, 5" short of 20 feet. Chrysler had met the 1973 5MPH bumper regulations by slapping huge rubber blocks on the bumpers of its cars.

Modern cars may not be as long as ALL 50 year old cars but the SUV's are surpassing many in the length department and ALL in the height department. Fact that today's SUV's are getting closer or exceeding the dimensions of some cars of the excessive years (no fuel crisis, little to no environment concerns etc.) is even ridiculous.

When I was working as a carpenter, I looked into getting a truck and my main problem with all of them was the height. You get a truck to haul your tools, all these trucks were too tall for me to grab a tool from the bed without hopping up into it. I had no need for a massive hunk of metal just to bring my ~200 lbs of tools to a site. Heck, put in a lumber rack and I could probably be better off with a short bed and extended cab. When Telsa unveiled the CYBERTRUCK I was actually bummed. A KZfaqr had converted her Model 3 into a truck by replacing the back seats with a bed and mounting a lumber rack. That was WAY more of a truck for me than an armored behemoth made for the end of the world.
@elijahstewart1333
@elijahstewart1333 2 жыл бұрын
even as someone who often has to work on trucks theyre so needlessly big, the engine bay is almost entirely empty space, the beds arent much bigger and the interiors feel like livingrooms, its ridiculous, when people were hauling the exact same shit in the back of their trucks that were half the size 30 years ago

@@velohench And even if crashes go down, the repair bills generally go up, because there is an entire subset of the automotive industry built on the premise of overcharging for accident repairs because the insurer is paying for it. Take whatever quote a body shop gives you to fix some damage to your car out of pocket, and expect them to charge at least 50% more if the insurance is paying for it (by changing other bits that didn't need to be changed, inflating the hours etc). Insurance is expensive, in part, because the car repair shops will charge them 1500 dollars to replace a bumper.

I really like compact cars, they've very popular here in Europe because you can park them virtually anywhere and generally they get better mileage. Skoda Fabia's are extremely safe cars that are cheap, compact and reliable. I also suspect its part of the reason that pickup trucks aren't popular, you can do more with a van thats smaller than a pickup truck.

I was thinking when he said that, that the only reason they got faster is for manufacturers to brag about it. In day to day life size is more important (at least in Europe) because many of those bigger cars are the worst when it comes to finding a place to park somewhere. They literally can't be fitted in some place that is supposed to be able to have one car. They take up almost 2 car spaces. I would prefer to cars even get a little slower for the safety reasons and remain their size instead of getting faster and thus bigger so they can fit all those safety features that would not have to be there

11:20 - The SUVs people buy with base engines like 2.5L turbo 4 cylinders need to be revved out a lot more to get into the power that's needed to make big vehicles move. And that just means the engine falls apart sooner because it is overstressed. It won't actually save money in the long run and will lead to more waste because vehicles will fail sooner. No replacement for displacement still rings true. Throwing on a turbo just means your choosing to amplify a certain part of the engine's power curve. Which means sacrificing peak horsepower for more low-end grunt or vice versa. Even with variable turbo technology you are stressing the engine out quite significantly for what usually ends up being very little fuel savings in larger vehicles.

Yep. Like I said in the other posts. If Vehicle Manufactures , are concerned about Fuel Economy and Performance. They can always make V8 Smaller Block Engines of 4.0 Liters to 3.8 Liters. Turbochargers and Superchargers can be options . While V8 Engines of Big Blocks and Small Blocks of 7.5 Liters and 5.0 Liters can be options also. They got the technology to make the engines also Straight Forward when it comes to not having complications and be Fuel Efficient.

No disadvantage for diesel (cold exhaust =no turbo wear,no knock=no limits on boost pressure, quality control=no lag, better engine housing to withstand diesel cycle no engine wear due to increased pressure). And for SI 5 years back it was ok as long as 1L=100hp. Now with Atkinson cycle and electrically supported turbos maybe a nice super-cap combo lag is manageable and increased torque can be traded for better economic at lower loads. So do not worry to much. While both waste-gate and variable turbo work best at one operating point as you point out, hybridization can completely make up for that. plus they can still operate over a wider band of rpm and at least support the engine a little. The torque curve should be designed for the task so that you do not need to rev to 4000rpm to get the turbo going. And i mean you could always either get power or eco and a modern turbo lets you decide with a kiss to the throttle. The times of turbos needing additional cooling by flooding them with fuel are over.

@Saint Fifty One for gasoline, yes. For diesel, no. Appart from the price neiter the added complexity nor the maintenance is enourmous. I mean in the Rally Dakar some manufacturers went from 4WD to 2WD because it is less maintenance, but they kept turbos. If you need a transporter for the cheapest price and low end torque, sure go for the 3L NA version, but in all other cases...

Depends large SUVs like Expedition, Tahoe 100% need that bigger engine. Min V6 Turbo putting in a 4 banger is such a large vehicle is dumb and no efficient. Smaller SUVs like the CRV and Ford escape can get away with a smaller Turbo 4 cylinder, biggest issue is maintenance. People never maintain their oil and its always been an issue. Now with Turbo engines becoming more popular those engines need regular oil changes because they will always burn a little oil and run hot.
@jacobvanhalteren7452
@jacobvanhalteren7452 3 жыл бұрын
@@Crazycro905 both honda and ford tried making 1.5l turbo engines fort the CRV and Escape. Fords engine was an overheating lemon, and Hondas engine didn't like head gaskets very much and was constantly diluting oil. The compact SUV segment is just stupid from the get go. People are paying more for a car that sits slightly higher on the road. 99% of buyers would be more than fine with a full sized sedan or wagon. And if people are always in need of the little extra space, they could probably use the larger engine as well.
