Get some NTN steel bearings instead, nearly exactly the same low friction at a far more reasonable price. Plus they last longer than ceramicspeed BBs. Hambini has talked about this at length, and sells NTN bearings, and NTN equipped bottom brackets for certain press fit BB shell standards.

The only issue with the Hambini is that you don't get to choose the NTN....he just sends what he has
@Bicyclechris
@Bicyclechris 4 жыл бұрын
Yes and No. If you buy individual bearings, you can specifically select NTN. With BBs, it can vary, and in that case you're right, you may not receive NTN bearings, but SKF or NSK or another manufacturer that produces a product of similar quality. Either way, you can get amazing steel bearings (NTN LLB) for a fraction of the price of ceramic bearings.

At my age of 74 when I recently bought new a bike that has ceramic bearings. Minimal gains, I admit, but at the same time these bearings and many other gains in efficiency and weight have allowed me to ride much faster so that at times now I can catch many younger riders. It makes be feel better and probably allows me to ride farther and longer than my old 20 year old bike. I have ridden over 60 plus years and at times do it to release stress. I enjoy the many benefits of this new high tech. I plan on riding many more years.

@Click Bait There are mid range bearings ($40) like ntn that absorb far less energy than most ceramic bearings and are much better than stock/cheapo bearings. They use a contactless seal which eliminates around 60% of the energy absorption. Also they outlast ceramic by ages. However, it does seem like the actual amount of energy absorbed by any bearings is minute and upgrading bearings seems useless to the average person unless they are a problem area (clicking, binding, etc.)

Put one in the previous Specialized road bike; it was better than stock. It seemed easier to get to higher cadences. The new road bike came with higher end steal BB bearings and so far so good after 6000 km; never felt like the BB was hampering performance. Best bang for the buck is really good steal bearings with really good bearing races for less than half the price.

It's just a bike. The loads are mediocre. The running speeds are low. Manufacturing tolerances can be lax. The only thing you need is a not too taff sealing on the bearing cartridges for them to perform. Look for the color blue on the gaskets.

👍🏻 the success of Ceramicspeed says a lot about us human beings... everybody knows that these bearings doesn't make a significant advantage - but if our heroes ride them to victory, they must be better! So CS is sponsoring almost every top triathlete and some cycling teams, and than they buy potential obstacles like friction facts - and the costumers have to pay all these costs, which are way more than the designing and production and shipping costs all together. Rather stupid... but it works. So, thumbs up for you to make videos like this one!!!

From my understanding, how easily the bearings spin when no load in applied is a poor metric. Seeing how many quarters it takes to turn your crankset by the pedal doesn't necessarily have any relation to real life performance. Bearings are designed for use UNDER LOAD.
@Fastfitnesstips
@Fastfitnesstips 4 жыл бұрын
The watts lost under load is highly correlated with watts lost unloaded (r =0.9; r2 =0.8) so the unloaded test is perfectly valid with high predictive accuracy. However a loaded test does test bearing drag much more than seals and grease...so in an ideal world you would also test under loaded conditions, however this is almost impossible for the consumer, whereas unloaded test is very simple. Therefore my coin test remains very simple but effective. If you want to read up on loaded vs unload BB performance data are here: www.hawk-racing.com/independent-bottom-bracket-efficiency-study/

Great content as always. Ceramic bearings will need over 5000rpm to produce a material benefit. Speak to any manufacturing engineer and will confirm that. So performance benefit for the avg. weekend warriors NIL. I believe that Ceramic bearings are only a matter of good feel factor or aesthetics factor. For a mid-range bike to spend that £ then its debatable. However for any top of the range bike frame ie. Pinarello F12, Cervelo R5 etc. with top components would anyone opt for the budget option? Aesthetics do matter, and is not a pretentious act to want the best component for the bike you love, if it makes it compatible with the top parts you opted and it makes you feel good too. I would rather "waste" £250 for my next bike to look good and feel happy, rather than drinking 60 drinks x £4 at the pub during the year.

Ceramic speeds new testing now has durace at .159 and ceramic speed at 0.033 only a 0.126 watt saving they now have to use Acera at 1.3 watts to get the better than 1.2w pulley wheel saving. There testing varies massively each time they test graphs appear and disappear on the website all the time. Who in there mind compares a £15 groupset roller jockey wheel to a £ 164 pulley wheels.

The next question is, is the bottom bracket of the frame properly aligned ? Hambini said, that even on high end frame, the bearings are not properly aligned. If you have any squequing noise coming from your bottom bracket, the sound means that your are losing watts. I would rather buy every year a new Ultegra BB ,which cost like 12 USD , the buying a super expensive boutique BB. Furthermore you have to maintain the boutique BB a lot, otherwise is not worth the cost.

Not sure about other brands but on Shimano’s pressfit outer seal it says not to disassemble, I did however on my old one to see how it is from the inside. As they suggested, not recommended cause the container and the seal are all plastic and they’ll bend a little and could cause more friction after reassembly. I’m very interested about greases though. On top of the original grease that comes with bearings in BB, Pulleys, Hubs. Is it okay to mix the manufactured or bearings grease with a lighter grease like white lithium sprays? I’ve left some white lithium in a container in a room and it got very dry or extremely viscous kinda like more than grease after 2 weeks time in the summer... I think this is a wrong product to use for bicycle bearings. If anyone knows more about this, I’ll appreciate it.

I guess I’m one of the few who has benefitted from a CeramicSpeed BB. That said, I’m an older, non-racer, enthusiast with a few extra bucks, who is also a gadget freak. I installed their PF30 BB about a year ago, and although I did go negligibly faster, I was consistently able to spin 3-5% faster. A big part of the increase was probably due to cleaning the BB, but I regularly clean it every 1500 miles or less, and I only ride on dry, paved roads. So is it worth it? Who knows, but for me it was because my legs weren’t as dead as before. How about a video about using ceramic bearings in pulley wheels (in non-OSPW SYSTEMS), and whether there are any benefits in using 12 tooth narrow-wide wheels over the standard Shimano 11 tooth ones.

So, basically, do the cheap stuff first. Then, if you have the cash to burn, buy ceramic for the psychological boost it gives you that far exceeds the actual watt savings. However, since most people won't do the cheap stuff like cleaning, they'll buy ceramic bearings which will get dirty and slowly lose their absurdly marginal gains just as quickly as the person who buys $20 steel bearings.

This is why full ceramic bearings and raceways are needed. My experience with steel bearings in my wheel hubs is that as the as you speed up, the steel will heat up and produce a top end due to friction. The ceramics have no top end. As for the bottom brackets because of the low rpms, FFT points out a clean quality lubricant is the most effective improvement in BB efficiency.

I have press fit Dura Ace bottom brackets on two bikes for a year now which isn’t advised to clean. It’s of course much smoother than when assembled. I wanted to follow your lead of putting a coin on the crank to check for smoothness. It looks like it needs like 2-3 AA batteries 🔋 to move the crank but when I pedal it with my hand, it looks smooth. Adding force and letting go would spin it like 4 times. INEOS never mentioned using any specific bottom bracket brand so I’m assuming they’re on the same boat. Am I losing many watts in my BB setup? Honestly, Hambini’s £170 is way too much for now...

I think some people with money to spend want to disqualify the equipment as a source of their slowness. This is a mental "game" they play. But it's no game really. It's a practice that makes those who have this need feel comfort. Im one of those guys who feels that some little thing in my drivetrain, the chain, the wheels, the tires, etc may detract from my overall performance. IF, I eliminated all those factors. THEN, I know it's not the BB or whatever that's slowing me down. All of those factors have been eliminated to put my performance or lack of it, squarely on my shoulders, cause now I have no excuse.

No way steel is anywhere near the perceived performance benefits of Ceramic bearings. Ceramic just feels sublime. Even hybrid ceramic feels much better than steel. The caveat is...Most riders are not making a living from Cycling and any gains is not paramount to wining and losing. Fact: Races at mere mortal levels/amateurs are won on fitness. The rest is what you like as an experience from a product. Life’s short. Why the rationalizing. You either can afford it or you cannot.

man i think you should ride a bike by yourself and compare in time!! when i see your nasty bearings shame on you... how can you ask performance and efficiency if you never clean bearing ... so wtf are your arg. for compare it. for tryed many bearings and riding more than 30k a every year with all climate. trust me they are worth at all. You can do easy maintenance, the bearings dont broke (yes many brands if you ride to long with the bearings they just broke and not beacsue of nasty, only because they get used). for a random guys, dont buy it. only if you clean your bike like me every weeks. or if you ride for competition just buy it. I check bearings every 3000KM and every 700km my bottom bracket is openned for clean everything if there is not rain . riding on rain i just clean every 300Km.

This video is very one-sided ... same like some magazines. If I compare my CS BB bearing to the one of c-bear for example there´s a huge difference. Quality of c-bear is not the same like CS. I don´t know if this guys ever drilled a oversized pulley from CS ... this one just doesn´t stop turning ...
