Today I wanted to share my opinion on whether Chinese people are 'rude' or not. I think that the 'Rudeness' definition can vary from person to person, so that's why this is a bit of a long one. Hope you enjoy and leave some comments below about what you think!

All valid points - but ultimately - It doesn't matter Why they are rude. They should make it a point to learn the correct etiquette of a place they are traveling to. Rudeness is unacceptable.

I am an American living in Hawaii and married to a mainland Chinese lady. Her parents live with us since 2019 when the pandemic started and have stayed with us since then. They are in their early seventies. A few years younger than me. We fight often because my mother in law think she knows better than me and wants and does her way while living in my home. When I tell her not to do this or that to my house, she (and her husband sometimes) still disobey me and continue doing it. Frustrating. Bottom line is that she doesn't show respect for me and does what she wants or thinks how things should be done and does it. She doesn't realize that she's a guest in my house. When we have a fight, she always say "I am going back to China" and I say please do if you're not happy living in Hawaii. But she doesn't go back. :-(

Listen, being loud, cutting in line, cold to strangers, not caring how your behavior impacts others and only helping people when you derive some benefit is universally rude and I don't think using culture cuts it as an excuse just because that behavior is common among the majority. If someone sexually harassed someone else you wouldn't use the excuse that in their time or in their village everyone sexually harassed people so it's fine. And by the way, kindness, humility, respect for your fellow men and civic duty are virtues written about in Confucianism and Buddhism which are historical backbones of Chinese civilization so there's really no excuse.

As a Chinese person who grew up in China and studied abroad for a few years, I can completely understand both sides. I feel bad when the world dislike China and the Chinese. The lack of manners, rudeness etc, it’s not a cultural shock for me since I grew up in this society. However since I am well-read and interested in history, so I knew why they behave like that. The cultural revolution brought to China by MAO totally destroy everything in China, including the politeness, virtues and those good quality that we valued so much in the past. People hated each other, people destroy each other and being rude is a way to get through their daily life or else you won’t get anything, or people might view you as weak. There must exist a reason for why things are what they are. Younger generation, ( by young I mean people who are under their 40s) however, we were taught from school years to behave well, better manners, be polite etc. so things are really changing for the better. Chinese tourists, often in groups, they are the ones normally above 50s, they experienced those darkest and most cruel history of China, so people are not that civilized and seem really rude. I often feel bad when the world now has a bad impression of the Chinese and it’s really unfair for the younger generation, especially those with good education and of course has a sense of respecting others and other cultures etc. We are not like those ill-mannered tourists at all. Please give China a bit more time. There are many good people there actually.

I think it's bullshit how chinese immigrants are receiving more scholarships for education than natural born citizens of America, regardless of race. How is that fair? Sorry China but stop having children, shuffling your feet when you walk, and polluting the world.. You also don't like to pay taxes and use cash to buy homes so it can't all be traced. If you guys don't want to pay taxes and just bash natural born citizens, you guys can go back home no problem. Sorry I live in a predominantly Chinese neighborhood, and most of the chinese that weren't born here are fucking rude and oblivious. You guys also can't drive. How hard is it to operate a motor vehicle?? sorry but a war between US and China is coming.. Guaranteed.

@9:50 I know Google translates 关系 as "relation", I think guanxi might be better translated as "connections" as in LinkedIn in the West. So if you are "well connected" you will likely have business and social advantages than those who aren't. Many Chinese people understand this and they will be especially nice to people they perceive as well connected or have a higher status than them. That's true here in the US. George William "Bill" Domhoff goes into this in detail during a 2 hour interview on the subject of "Who Rules America?" at the File Archives channel.

Several thoughts come to mind. US comedian Margaret Cho had as part of her late nineties routine a bit where she talked first about the racism she, of Korean ancestry, had experienced at the hands of whites and then followed it by wondering how comfortable US whites would feel if they were subjected to the directness of many East Asians: "They'll just say shit right to your face!," she laughed, " 'You're fat! Why is your nose so big?!'," etc. I've also known a few Americans who moved to Europe and found it hard to adjust at first to the differing norms of directness and friendliness and physical space of different parts of Europe. And I always have to wonder what these Chinese think when they are told to try to be more polite around Westerners. Are they thinking, "You're telling me Westerners are polite and that they think we're rude?! Aren't Westerners the same people who killed hundreds of thousands of people in the Middle East and Southeast Asia and the Americas?! These people think WE'RE rude?!"
@AaroninChina
@AaroninChina 2 жыл бұрын
That's right, we have this unfair prejudice based on the fact that we were expansionist and at one point leaders (colonists/awful people, but technologically advanced). The people in China are fairy direct that is true, they will say things like "your nose is big, and you're fat". So 'Rudeness' again is defined by the mindset and experiences that you come from.

Interesting topic. I didn't know Chinese tourists have gotten such a bad rap. I remember seeing them in groups at the South Street Seaport of NYC several years ago but they didn't seem rude to me. The generalization on level of education, rural vs urban upbringing, age, etc might be true in some cases but hard to say to what extent. While growing up in Brooklyn, I was unaccustomed to the relatively lack of respect some American students showed towards teachers when compared to my childhood in China, especially in the inner city neighborhoods. With regard to defecating in the streets, I don't recall seeing that at all either in China of the 1970s or in the US from any Chinese tourists, not even kids. Just sharing my own perspective.

Agree with you in total. Perhaps "a turnover in generations", lol may have been better. I am finding that it is the older women who appear to be rude, like not waiting in line, and i have also made them aware and can see the humiliation on their faces, as others also waiting in line with me have the same feeling, adding their own take on the situation, as the older women quickly move to the back of the line, in many of these instances. The excuses people come up with are comedic. People say it’s not rude, they’re actually being polite or it’s because of Mao or it’s because they’ve been on the receiving end of racism… those are all terrible excuses. When blacks say anything about slavery people tell them that happened so long ago and they need to move past it but Chinese are gonna use Mao as an excuse for them being rude?! We’re talking about common courtesy, a simple hello or good morning reply. There’s no excuse for that especially from people who have been in this country for decades.

I don't know if you have spent any time in Taiwan, but if so, it would be great if you could compare and contrast this topic. I heard from a mainland Chinese woman who has lived in the U.S. for many years that the traditional Chinese culture was destroyed by the Communist takeover in 1949, and the subsequent Cultural Revolution. Even widespread destruction of Buddhist temples and other religious cultural occurred. So she explained that the mainland Chinese have lost much of the traditional virtues of Chinese culture. I went on a trip to mainland China about 10 years ago, and was surprised how rude some of the Chinese were, and this was in their own country. For example, I was in a museum standing in front of a glass-front display trying to read the placard, and two Chinese women squeezed right in front of me and blocked me from reading the display! (There was only about 18 inches between me and the display glass, so it was intentional and totally shocked me.) However, since Taiwan was never taken over by the communists, perhaps they have retained much of the true traditional culture and virtues?

Let me tell you something that many foreigner don't like to confess. I don't know if they fear criticism by saying it or what. But I'll be real honest here. I'm American from and I've lived in Shenzhen for 1 year now. Back in the US, I'm used to different types of people since we are so diverse. And the Chinese there are totally different from the Chinese people in China. Actually, let me recap on that. The Chinese men I met in the US are totally different from the Chinese men in China. But that's to be expected. Boy oh boy, ever since I have arrived. I have learned and noticed one thing. The Chinese men in China will not make you feel welcome at all. That's a fact. Take it how it is! Very rarely you will meet a Chinese men, especially in the big cities who is genuinely being friendly with you and smile at you. The women are great. All the opposite from the men. But the men!!! Fuck men! It's like I took a million dollars from them. Now, I am Normal a peaceful kind guy. I'm quiet, shy, don't bother anyone, don't talk loud. And even I have witnessed some weird behavior from Chinese men here. Things like: - *spitting around me when I'm walking with disgust. - sighing the moment they see me. - STARRING at me from top to bottom. Literally, moving their head up and down for like 1 minute, trying to make you know they are doing it. Something not even the women do. - Saying: "waiguoren/laowai" followed by a dry spit on the ground. There is so much more weird behavior from them that really makes me feel hate, racism, and so much more coming from them. Now, I'm sure you guys (male foreigners) here must felt this and witnessed this. Whether you want to admit it or not, it's a different problem. So, are Chinese people rude? I wouldn't day Chinese people in general. I think the men are very rude (to foreign men), even among themselves, not so much the women. In fact, the entire time, the women have treated amazingly. I been able to enjoy, work, and much more in China because of them. And I'm so grateful for how Chinese women are. There you go. Just a little facts from my own experience.

I am curious what country you are from. Point is: if you lived in a rural village all your life with only rudimentary education and you're already in your 50s or 60s and you want to go visit a bunch of African countries, how much of their language and culture are you going to learn prior to visiting or are you just going to join a tour goup with a guide that's going to take care of all the trip details so you can focus on experiencing the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the places you'll be visiting? Chinese are hostile to strangers because if you are friendly then probably people will take advantage of you for being nice. For example, when I was shopping in the mall, some people handed over the leaflet for advertising their products or services. If I nicely accept the leaflet with a smile, they will keep chasing me around even I showed clearly that I was not interested and please let me go. But as they see you smile and nice, and polite, they will not stop bothering you. This is just an example. There are many other cases. Also, people take niceness as weakness, which is something that only prevailed in backward and barbarian society.

So join the strong ones through connections, because 'big fish eat small fish'. Still, as an aged Dutch sinologist, I'm surprised how derogatory Chinese towards lower ranking persons and (ethnical) groups can be, in China and outside of China. On the other hand, being a higher ranking person you should of course expect preferential treatment, to say the least. And it's only 'necessary' that you show to others who is the boss. But isn't this a desirable motivation to strive for the highest in society?! A factor whereby Chinese may not be rude is shyness, out of fear: outside of your comfort zone you'd be better be humble. But only if there's no other way out. No person wants to be submissive to another one. That's not to say that there aren't very polite, well-behaved, sincerely friendly Chinese, inside China and abroad, regardless of age. And true, many foreigners (including Dutch youngsters) don't always behave well, to say the least. And although Chinese often state that old chap Mao is to blame for the lack of politeness (and modern leadership for the lack of morality), I'm afraid that in the old days mentality wasn't quite different from now. Anyone from the rural area (80% of the population) is deemed to be a uncivilized peasant (农民), and, of course, no wonder he / she cannot but behave rudely. I guess this may, to a certain extent, be true, but that is not to say that rudeness is limited to peasants. Furthermore, the saying 入乡随俗 ("Entering a region, follow the customs"), though often cited by Chinese, seems quite hard to follow. So, I find it hard to say whether this will ever change. Lessons in politeness for, say, the last 40 years (both written and orally, also promoted by the government for those traveling abroad)) may not have fully paid off yet...

I think the topic is good as the topic is a good one. You cover the topic, and you cover the topic well. The explanation of the topic was covered…. It just took a really long time to make any sort of point.

obviously you missed a very important point. the young generation is raised by the grandparents, who pass these bad habits to them. I don't see many positive signs of improvement...

Yep, that's my mother-in-law from China. She's in my face practically and want to physically fight. She thinks she's smarter than anyone else, including me. She lives here with my family in America since pandemic started. When we fight, which is often, she tells me she is going back to China, and I say sure no problem if you're not happy in Hawaii. She's still here.

The real question is why would he be over there? I’m guess he couldn’t get a decent job in his country. These expats usually have every self justifying reason to work overseas.
