numerous aspects of marriage have been commodified over the years, from the actual wedding to the engagement ring. what used to be a simple sign of your affection, has turned into a way of proving "your love" to others. in today's video we decided to take a look at engagement rings. how they became a tradition, when diamonds became the standard, and why we feel pressured to spend so much money on something that doesn't really matter.

Diamonds themselves are also a scam. They’re not a rarity. In fact, they are a LOT more common than you’d think. The reason they’re so expensive is because one company owns over 90% of all naturally occurring diamonds so it’s equivalent to “you can’t get this nowhere else honey so send me your life savings if you really want it”

@@pssurvivorspare thought to your thought: to avoid the continuance of dehumanization when referencing people that were enslaved, it’s best to refer to them as that. In lieu of referring to these humans as “the slaves”. People who were enslaved is more accurate, negating the inherent devaluing of their person in the act of enslavement, especially as modern humans speaking in retrospect.

my now husband knew i didnt want a diamond and that i wanted it to be fairly inexpensive and fun to look at. so they got me an alexandrite ring that changes color in different lighting. they researched what stones would be tough enough to withstand my clumsiness and what metals would be best against tarnishing and my allergies. The time they took to choose something they knew i'd like and would be best for every day life was so thoughtful and better than any diamond to me 💖

I love diamonds, but when it came to my engagement ring, we went antique. My engagement ring has two rose cut diamonds ‐ a cut that's very out of favour because it doesn't show off fire and are very thin. But I love rose cuts - they glitter rather than blindingly sparkle. We paid $400 for my ring, and I love it. I would only caution anyone looking for alternatives to diamonds: if you mean to wear your ring every day, make sure you choose a stone that's hard enough for daily wear. Diamonds and their lab-grown equivalents, moissanite, ruby, sapphire, etc. These stones can all survive daily wear through the years. Lots of stones can wear away, fog up, or even break (emeralds can be particularly prone to breaking, even though they are quite hard). Or just refresh your ring every few years! Have fun! There are no real rules!

@withelisa

Just one note- black diamonds are gorgeous but they do get their color from inclusions, so they're brittle and prone to cracking compared with other gemstones. If your heart is set on it and you are careful, ofc go for it and enjoy! I wanted one too but ended up choosing a dark grey moissanite instead for durability. It's absolutely stunning. A very different sparkle (clear and colorful rather than smokey and moody diamond), but suggesting just in case ❤️

One thing I will say about my partner--he was certain we had a future from early in our relationship, and he asked me what sort of stone I'd want in a ring if/when he gave me one. So I told him, "No diamonds." Quite aside from the concerns cited here, there's something about colorless diamonds that always struck me as somewhat lacking in soul and expressiveness (unless you're expressing how much money you spent).

Yes, I agree! I've been putting off my engagement for many reasons, including my health, but a big reason is also the rings. I'm not sure what I want. I do know I don't want a diamond. I think they are ugly and extremely boring! I could do a colored diamond but those are also expensive. We definitely don't have the money for that. If I spend thousands of dollars it will be on something more important than a ring.

@@beckahcruz7463 Colorless diamonds are ugly, aren't they? I myself don't need to give up a kidney, as lovely as some fancy diamonds are. Well, that and sapphires are high enough on the Mohs scale to be wearable for every day.

I love that there are so many options these days (stones & settings). I don't have an issue with engagement rings, but rather the expectation and EXPENSE that people are pressured into, aka people without the means to afford a thousands on a ring, go into debt for it these days. And yeah, I’d rather not go for a diamond ring either, even if I’m wealthy since 1. Really expensive, and 2. I prefer more colorful stones, so I might go for an Alexandrite, Mojssanite, and/ or Opal if I get engaged. Plus hearing about the awful treatment of workers in the diamond mines made me not want a mine diamond even more. Coincidentally, Opal is also my birth stone.

I'm from Germany and I don't think you really saw diamonds, let alone large ones, being put on engagement rings before the internet made it trendy, most people I know either used one set of rings for both engagement and wedding or used plain silver (or another metal of that color at least) for their engagement rings and then "upgraded" to plain gold (occasionally engraved with names and wedding date on the inside) for the actual wedding rings. Also, both partners tend to wear them, not just the woman.

Yes, they are a scam. And they are pretty much worthless to resell. I told my husband not to go into debt on a ring before he proposed. Then my grandmother ended giving me her diamond from my late grandfather. We have struggled financially our whole marriage and have tried to sell it twice (not at a pawn shop). We were offered so little for it that it would have been an insult to take it. So I still have it and it worth far more now as a gift from my grandmother than anything else.

Nowadays, I just don't really see the point in engagement rings... You'll have a wedding ring anyway, shouldn't that be enough? Also, diamond rings are really expensive and (in my opinion) aren't even that pretty. Personally, I told my boyfriend (now fiancé) I didn't need an engagement ring and I am still happy with this decision 😊

I think the diversity of today's relationships means that there isn't really a one true way to view relationships, engagement and marriage. Your situation sounds very nice and I'm sure it is the right choice for you. I also know couples who don't want to get married, so they just got engagement rings and live together and started their own families. That works for them. The diversity of situations is beautiful and sticking to a traditional "man proposes with a diamond ring, couple saves money and maybe gets help from both sets of parents and then gets married and both get wedding bands" only needlessly restricts couples. And yeah, diamonds are expensive because the sellers manipulate the market. I agree that is isn't really worth it, but some people like diamonds and they can do as they please.

I got engaged with a 600$ garnet and gold ring I picked out. The garnet definitely shows some wear after ten years but honestly nothing is forever. The nicks and scratches are just a show of time passing. I'm still very happy with my decision. Garnets are my favorite stone and it brings me joy. You could argue that a more expensive ring would have held out better and maybe? But why? The ring is symbolic sure but it's not like it's tied to the marriage like it's The One Ring and if one is destroyed so will the other go.

My sister made fun of me cuz my husband proposed with a moissanite ring, while her husband gave her a 3k diamond ring and she even said that he probably doesn't love me enough to give me a more expensive ring, I really don't care I know that a ring is not a meter for love, but I thought it was that she think it is.

When I got engaged I asked my now husband to get something secondhand because of my sustainability values, and my preference for vintage styles. I love my yellow gold marquise cut ring even though it's not trendy right now. It is perfect for me, and for the quality of ring, it was a bargain. Secondhand is a great way to go with reputable sellers!

Would it be possible for you to add the names of the movies/tv shows that you’re showing clips of? Maybe as hardcoded text at the bottom of the screen? Some of those movies look good, and I’d like to watch them, but I don’t even know how to start on finding them 😢

There's no such thing as a "conflict free" diamond, no matter what the industry tells you. And lab grown diamonds still have a significant impact on the environment so however you spin it, it's just not worth it imo. And that's what I told my boyfriend. I'd rather spend two months worth of his salary on literally anything else. This is one of the best videos on your channel. This is the stuff I've been talking about for years!

Are diamond engagement rings a scam? Yes and no. Yes, they are more common than people realize and the price is SERIOUSLY overinflated. No, diamonds are the hardest naturally occurring substance in the world, which is important for something one could potentially wear for decades and be passed down for generations. My advice: if you are choosing to have a stone on your engagement ring, choose a stone that can LAST for generations.

I heard that a good quality engagement ring could be sold by the bride to make up for the bride’s family’s incurred costs for the wedding if the groom backed out. If the bride backed out, she needed to send back the ring and her family swallowed the wedding costs. So it’s like earnest money that the groom will see this engagement through. I didn’t watch the video, so maybe she addresses this

My fiancée didn't help pick out her engagement ring because I wanted it to be a surprise. Thankfully, I do know her taste very well. I actually got it from this online place called Juyoyo. The band is thin and twisted, the main stone is a moonstone, it has little diamonds beside the main stone, and it's rose gold. Me and my fiancée aren't conventional, so I didn't go with the typical gold and honestly, I think rose gold looks prettier than silver or gold. She brags about the ring (And the fact that it makes her happy makes me happy), and we're having a fairytale-themed wedding (Because there's no way I'm dressing like a butler for my wedding like all the other men in this world) and the colors of the wedding are rose gold, pink, gold, and a bit of white. She said that she planned her color palette to match her rose gold ring. When I saw the ring I just knew that it was her and that's why I got it. It was about 1,000 something dollars (I promise that a good number of Juyoyo's rings are more fairly priced) but the fact that it made her so happy made it worth it for me.
