Coleman enamel steel mugs, plates, and bowls are a part of our family camping trip experience. On my backpacking excursions, My son and I keep an enamel steel mug hooked on the outside of our packs. I like that they're light and easily replaced, being so cheap. I've never had problems with the lack of insulation, but I've probably just jinxed myself.

Perhaps it is generational Love my enamel mugs Get the 24 oz size! it becomes a drinking mug and a food bowl When you buy one, make sure the handles are big (some are small) And it can go on the stove Too hot to hold, wrap it with your bandanna Understand enamel It is a cook ware GSI makes a full range of eating ware and percolators and pots for use in camp fires Very inexpensive and very sturdy Cleans easily $5 at REI

exactly. All your points are correct. I used to get them at K Mart they were like 2.99 for the 24 oz size. I think they are a bit higher now but not sure.

I have three enameled mugs that I got for free about 10 years ago. They are nice as far as durability but like you said, they will burn the crap out of you if you try to drink out of them too quick and they cool down fast. It's a trade off. Depends on your situation. You can cook in them so you can eliminate some gear that way. Takes some getting used to but I like them for most situations

I like them, in large part because of the nostalgia, and I get them for way less than that $20 price tag. In fact, at a local store I frequent I can pick up a whole enamel dining set with a $20 bill.

I have an enamel coated steel mug I keep in my single sling pack and the only issue I have with it is that when I pour really hot tea or coffee in it, it gets too hot to hold onto. Other than that its great.

Lots of positives with an enamel mug but enjoying a hot coffee without burning your lip is not one of them as a young camper we learned to lick the spot where you intended to drink from to cool it and prevent lips 👄sticking to the rim these days my favourite camp mug is a double wall titanium snow peak mug

I always take an enamel cup on day hikes so I can drink my coffee from them as I find it really enjoyable. But i don't put them on the fire. I boil the water on a stainless steel por or can. In fact, one of the reasons I carry it is because they don't get warm on the handle mor the lip of the cup IF YOU DONT PUT THEM ON THE FIRE!

Enamel coatings can suffer from Heat-Shock i.e. if you're in a very cold climate and the cup is at a temperature below freezing, if its placed on the stove or flame etc the coating may crack.

I still have my World famous blue and white enamel steel cup from when I was a kid... Like you say, perfect to drink cold beverages, but once in awhile I would make a Cup-a-soup in there, and boy... That thing gets hot! I keep it for old time sakes, but otherwise, it doesn't get much use...

rust is Fe3+, i would search a bit more if that is safe In normal physiologic conditions, nonionic forms of iron (Fe°) are converted into ferrous iron (Fe2+) by gastric acid in the stomach. Ferrous iron is then absorbed in the small intestine where it is oxidized into its ferric iron (Fe3+) form before being released into the bloodstream.

I own a few but they don’t get to much use. Love the look and it reminds me of my childhood camping with my father & uncle. They had cups and coffee pot to match. Enjoyed that old camp coffee and these cups brings me back.

Enamel mug imo insulate alot better than my bare stainless steel mugs. That's my downside with regular steel mugs, when it's cold outside it really cools the drink off too fast. Can't finish my coffee or tea before it's cold. And enamel does better.

I like the idea but because they rust I assume they use non stainless steel. Iron almost. For outdoors I use US GI/British Army Crusader mugs which have flexy handles to avoid heat build up. Indoors and for camping, travel I find the cheap steel mugs, hold about a pint, with lids with small red handle available from Ebay to be very hardy. The stainless steel is pretty good, the lid can be handy sometimes to retain heat or keep debris out. They sell for around £/$2-3. The mug handle seems to drop the heat quite quickly. I often reheat coffee on the stove and the whole mug loses that heat quite quickly, leaving the liquid hot. Like most steel mugs some sandpaper once every couple of months removes any dirt and are like new. I have some steel bowls and plates by Ozark Trail (we have a store called Asda here in the UK which is connected to walmart) they have a stainless rim, blue coating, they have lasted many years and no real wear yet. Were on sale but seem well made.

Remember, those cool off and retention times are going to be different outside than they are in your kitchen. For better or worse. Face it, it’s a nostalgia thing. And that’s fine. We don’t expect an incandescent flashlight to work as well or as long as a 1000 lumen LED light, or a flintlock to perform like a Glock. So who expects this to perform like a double-wall stainless or a titanium cup?

most people tell me its too hot too hold it.. that's the point! if its too hot to hold it then its probably too hot to drink it!... dehh! enamel mugs are the best they are lifetime durable and don't break!! it's not without reason than they are not popular in a consumerist society

First of all, if you paid $20 for that mug you got ripped off. GSI has a 12 oz cup for a little under $6. There is no cup you can buy that does the same thing an enamel steel one will for that price, there's a reason enamel covered steel has been used for thousands of years. You can't use your insulated cups to cook with so you'd have to boil your water in something else. As far as your titanium mug goes, a) it's over priced, and b) I don't know what the weather is like where you are, but if it gets too cold and you put metal to your mouth it will be like sticking your tongue to a light pole. With the enameled steel, it's cheep, it's safe to put in a fire to cook with, and your mouth won't freeze to it. Enameled steel wins in my book.

I have 2 generic cups like yours. I’ve honestly never really liked them because they are so hard to hold while hot. The handle doesn’t offer much if any protection from the heat.

My sense of it is vintage preferences... yet still reasonably durable, lasting, familiar, multi-use, and functional nostalgia. While I enjoy the traditional style of the inexpensive camp-typical Coleman double-coated 12 oncer... there are obviously better enamel cups out there waranting twice the price, graphics, stainless and all. Is the 'value to cost' still there? Yep - probably so, and professionally speaking - yes That said... 'personally', would I see more functional all-arounder fitting use and value from the GSI Outdoors - Glacier Stainless Bottle Pot 24 oz at say 3x the cost of vintage Coleman? Definitely yes!!!

I'm not sure what the point of these is. Coffee? Yeti coffee mug with lid (or similar). Water? Big Yeti water bottle (or similar). Beer? Beer can. I don't see where a cup comes into play.

Other cups I've seen are double glazed...yet, isn't the whole point when camping is to get your hands warm by holding the cup? Why didn't you just test it with water poured from a kettle? Of course it's gonna be lava if it had direct flame on it.

Testimony of Jeremy Thomas Robbins: When I was a young man I enjoyed what most young party going men liked, such as girls, beer and drugs. I would have sex with any girl, any time and anywhere. For so long I am not sure how many I have been with at this point. I had little to no morals nor cares about anything really. The only thing I held onto was my word as I was taught when I was a child, that a man is measured by his word and to keep your promises. So, IF I said I was going to do something, I did it no matter the cost. That being said, one night I awoke from my sleep. Sat up in my bed and vocally promised myself I was going to read the bible. Not sure why, to this day I still have no understanding as to why I made this my word. So I sobered up and started to read..... and read and read more. Turns out the bible is a rather large book and it was taking me some time to do it. But I gave my word and I kept on reading it and as I read it the words where convicting my soul. I could feel something in my heart start to turn and became uneasy. Then one night, when I was asleep. I awoke to a presence in the hall at the end of my bed. I could see something was there but I was not able to see what it was. Then I heard a disgusting noise coming from it and I told it. You're disgusting!! Then out of the silence, out of the darkness I heard. YOU ARE TO And it grabbed me. Then I awoke not knowing I was in a dream as the entire dream was where I was and how I was. "Never had a dream like this before and never had another like it again." The crazy part.... I still felt right where "IT" grabbed me, as if the tightness of its grip was still on me. To say the least I have seen something that is not normal nor good. There are evil things in this world we can not explain nor understand but I know as true as the air in my lungs. Spirits are real and so is God. This is my testimony.
