"Are extended RV warranties worth it?" It's a question I receive and hear/see online ALL THE TIME. For some customers it's an absolutely great way to protect yourself and your RV. For others it's essentially a waste of money.
So how do you know if it's right for YOU? That's the onion whose layers we peel back in this video. We'll give you an idea of what is REALLY covered in an "Extended Warranty," what it DOESN'T do for you, and why some places basically try to shove them down your throat.
Additionally, you can learn about the Extended Service Plans offered at Haylett RV at us.portfolioco.com/ or contact our team for even more details!

I never buy extended warranty for anything! If it breaks I can fix it. Save lots of cash throughout my life. Oh, and when it comes down to time, I make it. No problem!☝👍✌🇺🇸🌞😁👊

Thats one of the bravest things I have ever seen anyone do in an RV video..... Post below if we pressured you into a service contract... or something to that effect. You had to be pretty sure your teams actions, actually "walked the talk", and were not going to create a firestorm below. I don't see a firestorm. Refreshing! I wish you weren't so far away. But the more I see, the more I think I need to figure out how to make a long distance relationship work :)

We bought one because it was our first RV and read so much on how constant it was to fix stuff and how fridges and AC’s go out. Our warranty covers the replacement of these big items and labor for 5 years. Yes, it was a few grand but one AC unit and maybe another item and it pays itself. Now, would I do it again getting some RV maintenance time under my belt, probably not. I think first timers it may be good but once you start wrenching a bit on these things you learn. GREAT VIDEO my friend. Wish you all were in NC.

Josh, you mentioned READING IT, LOL. I read my 30 page warranty booklet 4 months later. I usually do all my research ahead of time, but after 4 months of shopping for a camper, I was exhausted, lol. My biggest gripe with these contracts is the MAJOR LOOPHOLE they all have. I plan to take very good care of my camper and do the maintenance anyway, but if you don’t dot every I, and cross every T, they can deny the claim. I will do it, but how many people will keep every receipt for spray lubricant, seal conditioner, cleaning the furnace, etc, etc. I will look into the company you mentioned. Josh, thanks so much for all you do. Yes, I know you get paid, but you’re doing a service that nobody else I know of does. Take good care

I have been in the Service Contract business for over 12 years. Good job with the explanation. It is all about knowing what you are buying. Don’t trust the finance person that says it covers everything. Most of our customer complaints are due to being given misinformation at purchase.

I learned the hard way. I purchased a service plan from Rte. 66 and turns out theres 2 policy variations. One covers component failure and that's it and the other version covers consequential damage. In my case I had a plumbing leak at the black tank. In my case Rte. 66 would cover the failed rubber gasket, but it's on me to deal with under skirt damage and cleanup. For sheets of plastic, under skirt is super expensive! Going forward, I will take the contract home and study it before agreement.

I just bought a Rookwood from you guys and I got an extended warranty/service contract that covers the big things for me. To me, it's worth it. I was never pressured to spend more money on anything. As a matter of fact, on one particular thing, I was advised not to spend the money. I was told it wasn't necessary. HONESTY, that is why I bought from you guys. On a side note for first time camper/trailer buyers. You don't have to, but its a good idea to have an extra $500 or so when you buy. You will need some things for it and most of what's there at the RV Center is cheaper than at say walmart or menards. (Extended mirrors, vent covers, hoses, things like that)

Some extended warranties will only cover things that stop working from a "system failure" so a fan motor stopped would be covered but if the plastic blades break that would be something they may argue with and not pay, some are really sneaky some are better.

Definitely agree you have to read the fine print on these. I once saw one for a car that only covered things like crank windows and carburetors. And this was in the 2000s. Basically if anything went bad, they'd use that exception to get out of fixing anything.

We bought our Whitehawk 23MRB form you in 2016 and I can’t even remember being asked about an extended warranty. I am sure we were but I never get them and the Jayco had the great 2 year warranty on it. We were treated fairly and honestly by Haylett and the best part has been the service after the sale. Our salesman (Gene) always answered the dumb first timer questions for us and Haylett was always there for warranty and other work. We have had such a blast with our little Whitehawk and will be upgrading to a Northpoint in a couple of years and will be coming back to Haylett because they have more than earned our business and loyalty. @JoshtheRVNerd
@JoshtheRVNerd 3 жыл бұрын
I will 100% admit that's a greater challenge currently than there's ever been MOST of the time a customer's RV is sitting here it's simply waiting on parts But often we are required to have the RV here, have a tech officially diagnose, THEN submit a warranty request, THEN wait for parts before finally finishing the job Even simple things like shower curtains are taking far longer than *ANYONE* wants

Thank you so much for your videos. We went to several dealerships in our area just this weekend and most of the salesmen acted like they had no idea about warranties, wouldn't talk to us about them or tell us anything at all - just played dumb, said yeah we don't know. One guy told us we wouldn't be "allowed" to even see their extended service options or prices until we bought the actual trailer. Only 1 of the 4 we went too actually showed us their brochure and gave us an estimate price. A fairly disappointing experience overall for our first time out. We REALLY appreciate your transparency and willingness to just be up front about stuff. We get stuff costs money and prices can change, but seriously even just a low to high ballpark is helpful for people that are trying to do their due diligence prior to purchasing.

I grew up learning from both my Dad and my Grandfather, how to work on things. After High School, I went off to USAF Basic and Tech School, and learned more about maintaining and repairing, and have been steadily employed doing so for over 40 years now. That said, like you, by the time I finish a 40 hour (sometimes more) work week, I don't really feel much like coming home and doing more repairs. We opted for the 4 year extended warranty on our Wolf Pup that we bought recently, and one thing I've been careful to check, is what actions can possibly void the Manufacturer's warranty, and the extended warranty (bolting an aftermarket bike rack to the rear bumper, for example, is a big no-no for the Manufacturer's warranty). That's the other thing owners need to be careful to check - what they can and cannot do and keep the warranty intact. It's far better, when in doubt, to contact the manufacturer's warranty service office and ask, than to find out after the fact that your warranty is now null because of some accessory you installed.

It's not a matter of the time, it's weather you can afford to pay someone else to do the job. When I sold cars I asked people "If this car breaks down 2 months from now and you have no warranty, do you have the extra funds to pay for a $1500 repair? NO? Then you need to buy an extended service contract now to pay for repairs slowly over time, rather than all at once.

Another masterpiece video, Josh! Since I bought my RV from a private party, I had no sales pressure to purchase an extended warranty. In January 2020 I purchased a new 2019 Ford F-350 Dually, Platinum trim, from a dealership in Orlando, FL. At the time of the purchase, I declined the extended warranty. The sales manager said I'm "surprised" you didn't purchase the extended warranty. I should have told him I could not afford that after the dealership charged me $800 for the pin stripe they added, another $800 in predelivery service charges, and another $200 for administrative processing fees, for a total of $1800. I will however, look into an extended warranty after the 36 month manufacturers warranty expires.

Josh never hurts to read and confirm you aren’t or are going to benefit. As an engineer by training; I still can’t justify the tools to do my own body work. So I buy insurance for that….but I do all my own maintenance including replacing most appliances. So if the extended plan doesn’t cover something infrastructure related there’s no value to me. But your points on look at the individual benefit to the buyer is spot on.

I believe it was like $3500 or so to get 4 additional years of coverage after the manufacturer's warranty expired (so 5 years total). To me, it seemed like a no brainer when buying a $50k+ RV to protect my investment. That said, I'm fairly handy and have figured out how to replace some fairly complex things over there years. I'm not going to lose camping time having my rig sit at the dealership when it's something I can fix myself (even if I have to pay out of my pocket). I bought the extended warranty solely for MAJOR/CATESTROPHIC stuff, like needing to replace the cable-driven slide system, or the axles, or something like that. I view it as insurance. You hope you never need it, but if you do you're glad you have it. The guy that we spoke with was very knowledgeable and informative when explaining it, and wasn't pushy at all. He provided the information and I made the decision. I don't feel like he influenced me at all.

On a camper or rv that additional extended warranty is worth looking at. Lemon law don't cover rv's. Nice pop ups in the background. Was that goose neck trailer for sale by the vans. The videos are a great way to show people what you got and gain sales.

The answer is NO...Most extended warranties are offered by insurance companies, lots of fine print, they’re not in the business of paying for anything, ever...IMO

I am a Field Service Technician in the medical field. I still bought the warranty because even though I could save the money and do it myself, I have found myself paying to have stuff done more and more as I get older (only 37 lol). I fix stuff for a living and I sometimes hate fixing my own stuff on top of it. Especially if I don't quite know what I'm doing and don't have help.

Extended warranties started out as a great idea, but there are more shady warranties and dealers than good ones, so most of the time its a loss of money. I see more often than not work not covered under warranty than covered, Seem like most of the time they find a way to not cover it, leaving people with a bad taste in their mouth. If there were just more places like Haylett's that would shoot you straight rather than trying to squeeze the customer out of money and making they angry when something happens.

Thanks for your thoughts on extended service contracts. Speaking only for myself, I haven’t found an extended service contract that pays for preventative maintenance costs. We’ve had RV’s from several manufactures and have tried to faithfully follow the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual. I believe that this is critical to minimizing major or expensive breakdown issues. I get more peace of mind from paying the cost of routine maintenance than paying for an extended service contract. This form of self insuring wors for wife and I. Your experience may vary. Respectfully, WS

I'm capable of doing moderately difficult repairs. But as I get older, I just don't like spending my free time repairing things. I've spent many weekends rolling around the ground underneath a car or truck. My newer vehicles have extended warranties on them for peace of mind and kinda out of shear laziness. Same for my new Wildwood.

Here is what happened with us. We were at a show looking a Jayco rep got involved said if they could match a price we found would we buy that day. My wife actually said yes. He talked to the dealer they had to order it because they did not have the one we wanted with the leveling system. It was good he got involved a salesman said he couldn't match that price I found with what they had so maybe Jayco gave the dealer a break?? It was cool not having a lot model hundreds of people had been in so we ordered it. We had to sit and wait a bit I got up to ask the rep a question and they called us in and my wife was alone for a bit and she said yes to the extended warranty. I sat down and was not happy. he used the " its only 20 bucks a month more" or what ever it is it doesn't sound like a lot. Of course he added paint shield and fabric protection for a few bucks more only added 20k to the price!! He actually got mad at me said you know how to fix a propane refrigerator yes I do I worked for a propane company then said if I touch anything the warranty is void I said hell cancel it because I am modifying it!!! He uses the b.s. that each piece has its own warranty the microwave is only 6 months. Now remember this is a Jayco everything is covered for 2 years!! My wife was still sold so we signed. It was a long day we were actually leveling but I wanted to look at one more thing first that's how we got snagged lol. The next day after looking at it all my wife asked if we should cancel it I said heck yes. She called and he said exactly that let me check with the bank! I said screw you the bank has nothing to do with it you don't want to loose your commission just go ahead refund our down payment immediately!! Magically that fast the bank said its ok I will take it off!1 I was so pissed we have it 1 year now I fixed all the factory screw ups it was worth it to me because of the cost of fuel to drive it to a dealer and to not loose it for weeks waiting even the one thing they fixed which was a tank warmer that fell off in transit fell back off and I had to fix the dealer screw up.

If you buy an extended warranty that replaces your fridge or stove check to see if your appliances fit out the door. If they don’t do you have a slide? Will the policy pay to remove it and get said appliance out? Yes you should have be thinking 🤔 of these things when you buy a trailer. You could end up driving around with a bunch of appliances that are broken and your doomed to camp with and use as storage

I bought a TT this winter to rent out and got the extended warranty. 5th rental of the season and the entire slide broke under bad footings. The box store deslership can't fix it under warranty for MONTHS because they are too busy. It would have killed my income for the whole season. Instead I'm stuck paying an RV guy privately to get the parts and fix it. 🤦 I wish I had driven across the county to buy from you who could A. Fix it or B. Not sucker me into an extended when I can't even get it repaired under the FR basic warranty. 😩 Josh, I'm driving to Michigan for my next one. Lesson learned the hard way. Question for a future video: why does the quality of RVs vary so drastically? I've enjoyed watching your factory tours to see which use quality materials and processes but it seems like there's a lot of junk that would never pass Haylett quality control.

No we did not buy our Jayco from haylett. We were not pushed in any way from our local independent dealer to do so. We actually were given a window that is could be bought later. We did do just that. But we're were sold the Jayco direct jay plus. Our unit just turned 5 years old. We have Not hade to have any warranty work done after the initial Shakedown period with some minor repairs under warranty.
