And they are good for chicks! I LOVE mine and I am a 57 year old female. Gives me a lot more confidence on trails, totally absorbs shock and in winter, I can go all year! Plus for me, it's quite a bit more push through my glutes. The annoying thing is all the men that need to pass me and have to comment on how much work it looks like. I ride my fat bike year round. Love the traction as insurance against conditions. Not as great on downhills and technical stuff but I am afraid of all those stunts. For fire trails and just overall riding in the wilderness IMHO it gives a versatility, even durability that suspension bikes don't have. FAt bike all year round for me, love 'em. Wish I discovered it sooner.

wheels......uh. wheels that create a better aerodynamic profile with the tire and are lighter weight are faster. tired that are wider have less rolling resistance and better aerodynamics and a wider tire give you more grip. not sure which youre talking about

Fat bikes on downhill are harder to control at turns cuz they don't create that pressure on the ground as much as regular tires. He slipped on that tight curve just cuz of that. Someone really pro can harness the speed really well though.
@littlegoobie
@littlegoobie 6 жыл бұрын
to go with this, wider tires are faster on a slightly rough hard surfaces becuase they absorb terrain and vibration rather than rattling the bike and rider, slowing you down which occurs with rock hard, rail thin tires.

Great montage, i really enjoyed the attention you put on the music choice and the "flow" between 3:03 and 4:05. We can tell the whole team is really enjoying what they are doing, as i do too! Now you guys are getting in the "controversial stuff", could you bring us some Ebike controversy! E-biking is SO fun, less pain, more speed and usually huge smiles, how could it be wrong? ^^ We already know Neil kinda enjoyed the experience, and Marc seems sceptical, but the real question everybody has in mind: "Are E-bikes fun?" I bet that video would be as popular as the "fat one". Thank you guys, i'm there with you everyday now. ;)

theres one trail near CTC. in killeen/cove. Ft. hood has some pretty good spots to ride either in the land nav. areas or the old motocross track. its all hard pack and pretty loose though. I would choose a fat/plus bike if I go back there again. Theres also a spot out near BLORA (belton lake) that looks pretty narly like in the video here. but I never tried driving the truck there. I always just rode out there and was way to gassed to actually do anything there besides just ride back to the barracks.

TRUTH.. I spent close to $8K "carbonizing" my Santa Cruz Tallboy LTc - It was the last ride I was going to buy. To make a long story short, I recently purchased the Trek Stache 9. I didn't want to like it. I really didn't - but dammit, now I can't get OFF it, and my Tallboy is in the basement. It is a "Plus" size bike, and it is SO MUCH FUN, I simply can't believe it. Most the videos I've watched are correct; it can be hard to get moving, but when you do, it's like a freight train. However, on a technical climb, it climbs like a goat. On technical downhills, don't bother picking a line - just barrel straight ahead. If you have questions you can ask me. I don't work for Trek, I'm a lowly bar owner. Just do yourself a favor and check in to the Plus size bikes. It ain't hype...

Good job, great vid. Personally, I find fat bikes bit too cumbersome, even going downhill. Plus bike however, that’s way to go - epic fun when I rode one at Crankworx.

I've seen these in stores a lot lately. They just look ungainly. I think I'll stay with my normal regular trail bike.

+JB Berg as a Canadian, I can say that fat bikes are only getting more popular here. I can see them dying off pretty quickly elsewhere, but they rule the winter out here.

+Kuragari10 Granted, but it's been over ten years since the Pugsley. Over here in Finland fat bikes are starting to pop up in cheap market stores and at the same time people bike people are selling off their Moonlanders. That's the vibe I'm getting.

could you guys do a video on all the bikes you own personally? Do you just have loads of test bikes or do you really own 15 trail bikes each?

Regardless of the premise being silly to begin with ("fast" being largely subjective, if it's even important) wouldn't it entirely depend on the terrain? How about asking the reverse? Are regular mountain bikes "fast" on snow, sand, bogs, and overland off-trail?

Getting a fat bike to move from a stationary position is tough. But once it starts rolling, it just keeps going! Like a goddamn tank! Uphills are a nightmare though.

The most interesting part of this video is that a hard tail fat bike was only marginally slower than a full suspension bike.. Do you think if you had compared the fat bikes with some 27.5" hardtails instead the fat bikes would have been beaten them on the descents? It seems to me that a fat bike would have an advantage on rough and technical Downhill over a standard hard tail, and given how close this comparison was I think it supports my hypothesis.

I own a trail bike and a fat bike. The fat bike makes you smile no matter what. And everyone else for that matter. And it's my goto winter bike for the mud. Then I ride my trail bike in the summer, which after a winter of fatty riding, goes like the clappers....

It would be very interesting if you do this comparison with a lot of other bikes too. For example Hardtail 29'er vs a XC 29'er fully. And if you would do all the tests on the same track, you could put all the data in 1 tabel so we can compare the bikes easily. To make a comparison like that even more reliable you could add additional data like HF or powerdata.

STEEP DOWNHILL SECTION: Bontrager Gnarwals. Massive knobs, use this on the front and you would have gone much faster than the "normal" bike.

A difference of 41 seconds over 23 minutes sounds like it's mostly that you guys are used to riding on the trail bikes but not on the fat bikes. It would be interesting to see what sort of times you put in after a week's practice on the fat bike.
