Fuji has the market cornered on retro-styled, fun cameras. But are they good enough for a professional to use?
I've been a full time Fuji Shooter since July 2023, shooting on a Fuji X-T3 with a 23mm f/2 and 56mm f/1.2 and I have thoughts.

I'm a photographer with an apsc camera, so far my clients have no complaints with the photos. There is only one client who complained why the camera I brought was small? Because the previous photographer brought a big camera. But after seeing the results, again there are no complaints. I use a Sony A6400 camera and I assure, APSC can also be for professional work. Cheers!!

@@_justkarl Probably a misconception that people have about cameras, maybe the size made the client feel or think that the photographer isn't taking photos with a professional camera.

I have been using fuji professionally for about 5 years now and yeah, its a solid system. the xt4 and after, uses the new (much bigger) battery which was the biggest leap forward for me from the xt3. regardless, just wait till you get your hands on the old 35mm f1.4 or the new Viltrox 75mm f1.2 you will just looove the character of the images it produces. Anyhoo love your work. keep on keeping on.

yesss I have the 75 1.2 and it's the best lens I have ever owned. I've owned like 15 lenses. most for my Sony which I had for years. However I sold that to go to fuji, Fuji is more for the creative and artsy people I think because it is a bit slower, which I love though. Sony was just too boring to use after a while, it did everything and I didn't really feel inspired anymore. With Fuji it's a whole other thing.

Great video! I’m very much an amateur who has a lot to learn. Last year I wanted an X100V because it was all the rage and it really appealed to me. But prices were ludicrous so I got an XT-5, and gradually fell in love with it. I recently treated myself to an X100VI, and was lucky enough to get a pre-order. I love both cameras!

Pro for 38 years. Switched to Fuji around 2018 from Canon and previously Nikon. I am a very busy corporate event shooter as well as a busy classic portrait shooter. I could not be happier. Trust me, I know quality and Fuji delivers it. Even my Sony associates love my images. Sports? Maybe not. But I'm not a sports shooter. Noisy at high ISOs? Yeah. But how large will those images go anyway THESE days? A phone? A computer screen? If I NEEDED less noise at high ISO then yeah, I'd choose Sony or Canon. But high ISO is not something I worry about.

Zach Arias has been using Fuji cameras for professional work since the X-Pros 2. ...or earlier. Ben Chrisman has been shooting weddings since the X-Pro 3. I shot 4 seasons of weddings with the X-T2 - only in the most extreme dark lighting, did the X-T2 struggle. ...Fuji has been plenty good for quite a while.

Caleb, new follower. Keep bring this real world content. It's sorely needed on KZfaq. That said, I didn't realise this was actually still a question. There are a number of professional photographers who only shoot with a Fujifilm based kit. John Branch, a Charlotte-based wedding photographer is the first person who comes to mind and he's an avid KZfaqr worth checking out if you don't know his work. We have a saying in West Africa, and I paraphrase, "he who thinks his mother is the best cook never visits". Simply put if you've never shot with another kit, you only know what you know. I've shoot Canon, LUMIX, Leica, Nikon, and last but certainly not least Fujifilm for both personal and professional work. The only system I refuse to shoot is Sony and my reasoning is quite simple, I don't like their colour science or convoluted menus system. I shot with Fujifilm for nearly 7 years but sold off my entire Fujifilm kit in 2023 for the Leica M10-R, LUMIX S5II and now Nikon Zf only shooting with M mount lenses. For this stage in my evolution as a photography and the art I want to continue creating full-frame was what I needed as a tool. But that in no way means I didn't enjoy my experiences with the Fujifilm line of cameras. The X-Pro3 still remains my favourite cameras of all-time and the only reason I sold it was because Fujifilm has taken too long to come out with the X-Pro4. So, hats off to all the Fujifilm shooters our there. It's a creative beast. Happy shooting.

Ive always found that the debate of FF vs APSC is mostly done by people who are not professionals in the industry at all. Ive been shooting commercially (Product, Web, food) for the past 8 years with 4 of that being shot with Fuji (I run the xt4/XH2/XH2s) and I can tell you, not a single client has ever said a single thing about shooting apsc. Clients do not care what you shoot, they just care about gettin the content to put up on socials at the end of the day!

It amuses and annoys me to no end as to why so many question Fuji’s capabilities to do professional work. I am an ex-news/wire shooter and while I was a Canon shooter going back to 1980, I instantly gravitated to the Fuji system upon leaving the news biz in 2016…after all I had been shooting Fuji film stock since 1991 after leaving Kodachrome. I largely shoot editorial, travel, and stock these days and since making the switch to Fuji in 2016, clients seem happy, I am still working, so…yeah, I guess you can use a camera from a company that has been in the image making business for over 90 years and cameras for some 75 years now…who knew, eh…? I believe that Fuji has more photographic knowledge and history than say…Sony. That said, Fuji really needs to get serious and address the Elephant in the room, namely their AF. Firmware updates are fine and all, but they seem to rarely solve the issue of a mediocre AF system. Frankly, I don't get it, surely their engineers and designers are every bit as smart as those from Sony and Canon. Honestly, having to “menu dive” to tweak and hack for a better AF experience, c’mon Fuji, really…? Still, I am going to tough it out, I simply love these cameras, especially the X-pros and X-Tx lines as well as the X-E series. I am from an older generation of shooters (58) and we tend to ‘marry’ into a particular system and from 1978 to 2016, it was Canon. Barring some unforeseeable situations, I will likely stick with Fuji until the end.

@@mex5341Been using fuji cameras in high energy concert settings for 3 years with little to no issue. it really doesnt matter what system you use as long as you know your camera and know it's limitations. I know quite a few professional sports photographers that also love the xh2s. Imo if you are a real pro you can excel with any modern system. Modern apsc cameras are 0.5-1 stop worse at most in iso performance, if you need 12800 iso to get a shot you probably should check your settings.

Yup… especially in editing dynamic range latitude… even the older GFX, such as the 50R, has amazing files. Just upgraded to a 100S, and the addition of phase detection autofocus is by FAR the best feature of it, the dynamic range is almost equal to the 50R, and ofc resolution at 102 megapixels lets me crop the crap out of any image

Too many old lenses, slow and loud AF even with new ones (56/1.2 WR), updates are too slow. No fast focusing fast prime portrait lenses in the range 40-80mm. Tracking is still far behind the competition, if there are more than just one object in the frame, even with the XH2s.

The rendering of textures and dynamic range of the fuji x-system aren't great *at all*, and colors aren't either despite the "fuji exceptional color science" myth and the hype around their film simulations...Images coming out lack the natural feel, color nuances and details of ff and mf, their digital nature gets obvious when observed at 100%. The only positive points are their cameras' design from an aesthetic and ergonomic standpoint (but the menu system is still a bit messy/buggy), the fact that they're not overly heavy and large, and their price, that's all.
@CalebThomasMedia
@CalebThomasMedia 4 ай бұрын
Dynamic Range definitely isn’t the strongest. And like I said in the video, I think the textures issue has been largely fixed for the raw files in Lightroom, and if you used a different raw editor it was never an issue! I’ll sometimes pull a raw file into Luminar AI and it renders texture and detail exceptionally. The film sims are definitely fun and I love playing around with the different recipes people come up online, but I wouldn’t use any of those for anything but a bit of fun for sure. But yeah, I’ll still stand by my conclusion that especially for the kind of work I do, which is mostly individual client based, Fuji APS-C cameras are definitely good enough!
@rebours
@rebours 4 ай бұрын
@@CalebThomasMedia Complex textures like foliage seen from a distance or granular surfaces aren't rendered in a clear, natural way and subtle colors nuances are totally left out and forget about saving details in shadows in high contrast scenes. Almost any camera is good enough if the subject and the composition are genuine, but the apsc fuji x system doesn't come close to cameras with larger sensors from an artistic point of view. For my personal needs, while I do not regret having bought mine as it has taught me a lot and allowed me to try different focal lengths, a ricoh gr would have been the better choice for its ability to be always with me. Fuji cameras offer an interesting compromise for some photography genres for sure, but for everyday stuff they're too large and they're a bit rough on the edges for more demanding needs, in my experience (which is not a professionnal one).
