Beyond any doubt the best video on grow bags I've seen.......

Sit the grow bag on top of a water reservoir like a container with a lid. A wicking cord connecting your grow bag to the water reservoir means the grow bag soil remains moist and you can easily check the water level, massively reducing the risk of soil going too dry.

Great tip, much like a self watering pot. Would definitely be useful for grow bags!

I just added small and medium sized bags this year on my rock patio. I am trying potatoes, bush beans, sweet potatoes, and berry bushes.

First video I've seen on grow bags that doesn't claim they're the best thing since sliced bread, appreciate the honest review.

I started using grow bags last year and really do like them. The drying out thing is a definite issue though but one that doesn't stop me from using them. Having the benefit of last year's use I think the solution is to pick them up and put them in a container of water, even compost tea to get soaked thoroughly. Once a week would be so beneficial and keep them from getting too dry and becoming hydrophobic. I did only potatoes in 5 gallon bags and they did well, some better than others but still very happy with them. This year it'll be all Jimmy Nardello Peppers (6) and Nu Mex paprika peppers(6). Come frost time I can save a few and bring them in and out and feel good about cheating nature.🥳😎 I do raised beds too so grow bags are a very good compliment to a garden. Potatoes in five gallon buckets really work too and definitely something I will always do.👍🏻

I just planted 10 peppers about 10 days ago using the black bags. Thank you for posting this video. I hadn't thought about under watering because the water goes through the bag before completely watering the roots. Thanks, again!

So glad you guys suggested these on Pepper Geek. I bought a 20 pack of black ones last year and had so much success with my peppers. Using them for peppers, chickpeas, tomatoes, and alliums this year!

I love this new channel and just soak it up! You and your husband have such great info and no jibber jabber like most gardening channels. I grew up in Avon CT but now live in seacoast New Hampshire so appreciate your tips and info being similar to what I need to do. It's February and I'm holding back planting seeds but it's darn near impossible.

@@geekygreenhouse I'm the "Jimmy Nardello" of my family and picked up my love for gardening very young from my Mom. She always had something growing and it just hit for me. I still have bleeding heart plants in memory of her, and raspberry plants from my grandfather that died just before I was born who planted them in the 1940's. Gardening is so much more than growing food. It really does nurture the soul as well as our bodies. My grandmother's raspberry jam is always a Christmas gift that honors the past, and gives a nice taste of summer when the ground is covered in snow.👍🏻❤️ If you ever make it to seacoast NH I'd love to give you some heirloom raspberry plants to take back to grow where I grew up.😃 They're bulletproof!

Thanks for the vid. I have put most of my 45L grow bags on a pallet with landscaping fabric underneath this year. I hope this will stop the bugs from encroaching into my crops.

I put my 5 gallon grow bags on a pallet too with potatoes in them. It just makes sense and also is easier to mow around.

I agree. Tried it couple of times, dries too quickly even in my wet climate, not durable.

if you live in a desert area as i do the bags dry out within a very short time, if they are anything but white they get way overheated from the sun. Last year i threw over 400 bags away from my chili growing farm in New Mexico, a very expensive mistake.

Yikes! Sorry to hear that, they may not be ideal for arid climates, though there are “lined” bags that dry out more slowly than unlined

I live in Florida and sometimes it rains heavily every day for multiple weeks straight, so I like that the fabric bags dry out quicker. I prefer the brand AC Infinity. Their bags seem more durable than my Bootstrap Farmer ones do, and I prefer the look of them as well!

Yes, in that case the fabric bags would definitely be a plus. We'll have to check the AC Infinity ones out!

@Geeky Greenhouse I hope you guys get the chance to check them out! They are a few bucks more, and don't have fun colors, but they have a couple different features/options and look nicer 🙂 Bootstrap farmer is still my go-to for plastic things though!

We’re using them to grow potatoes with the thought being that it will make the potatoes really easy to harvest.

I had some voles chew into one of my bags, but that's the only thing I've had really damage them. Did you have any trouble with the algae damaging the plants? We get moss, mushrooms and weeds on the outside of the bags here (PNW) but I just brush it off.

Interesting that you said they don't last too long. I bought some of the 7 gallon ones last spring, grew peppers in them, kept them outside all summer, often on the grass even, and then brought them inside to overwinter. Kept them inside all winter, watering them near the drainage hole in my basement. I finally put them back outside a week ago, and so far I haven't had a single rip from like 12 bags or so. Also, no critters chewing holes in them either.

I didn't like mine at all, mostly due to rapid drying soil (I live in an arid region). But also I found the bags to be unsightly and clumsy as they tip over or spill out easily.

So you have to water them more - and if you have more than a few, that's a lot of extra water and a lot of extra time. They seem pretty crap to be honest.

I have different size grow bags. Under the 10 gall bags I have huge round serving trays from academy sports. Plants in these bags do much better. 🪴🪴🪴
