In 2019, a diamond-encrusted crocodile Birkin bag sold for $500,000. The Birkin bag, made by French luxury brand Hermes, is named after actress Jane Birkin. It consistently shatters sales records at auction, selling in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. But experts say the bag cost just $2,000 at its inception in 1984. We looked at how Hermes elevated the Birkin to a status symbol and collector's item and whether or not the Birkin bag is a solid investment.
Correction: The Ferrari featured in the video is actually a Ferrari 458, not a Ferrari 812 Superfast. The retail price of a base-model Ferrari 458 is under $300,000.
According to David Oancea, who purchased the $500,000 diamond-encrusted crocodile Birkin mentioned above and $2,000,000 of Hermes Birkin bags overall, they're a solid investment. He claims to have been offered $680,000 for the bag, a nearly 40% profit.
By owning a Birkin he's part of an exclusive club that includes Melania Trump, Miranda Kerr, Katie Perry, Victoria Beckman, and the Kardashian / Jenner clan. The Birkin bag also has fans amongst those who have created businesses and personas based off of the bag. Monika Arora is the founder of Pursebop.com, a destination for Birkin bag enthusiasts. Jane Angert is the president and artistic director of JaneFinds, a company that helps buyers find rare Birkin bags.

All the people have different preference regarding how they want to spend their money. What's wrong with living life as she wants it? There is nothing wrong with that as long as she is not doing something immoral or unlawful. We are all socially wired as human beings and we are inclined to think about how others think about you. What's the difference between showing off your wealth by purchasing expensive bags or being condescending because I am frugal? Just live your life however you want it. No need to judge others on their spending. Life is too short for that.

Yllow Afryca first of all, saying that she would only be working hard if she was in university is such a dated way of thinking. Jamie and her husband got money from business ventures, investing and making businesses together. next, why are her contributions to society relevant in this situation? it isn’t about her being a saint or being a global citizen, it’s just about her bags! you say that you aren’t hating but your reply to the op was literally “don’t forget whom she sucked to get them”. sounds a little hostile to me. finally, one google of “jamie chua divorce” would tell you her husband cheated on her.

QuietStormX agree for some. Perhaps a few of them actually just like the look of the bag and not the price tag. It’s weird I know but some people might believe that it “looks” good and expensive because of the price. I always joke around, saying “I wouldn’t know the difference between some inexpensive and some super expensive items, so I hope they don’t buy these products to impress others”. But then again if a person has that kind of money, they probably have a different social circle of others who are just as rich. To them $10.000 is probably like $100 or even $10 for the average person.

Enjoying the art of the bag is one thing, but all the excessive emotional baggage points to a deep lack of self worth. I think a Birkin should be purchased only to be re-sold for profit, otherwise it's like letting a corporation hijack your inner core and this kind of self view is potentially damaging. Of course if you are wealthy enough to buy these bags for fun and not worry if it gets stolen or damaged, then it's like anything else, no big deal. I've done my research and if I want a quality hand stitched bag I'd head for April in Paris which is a handbag/leather goods store in San Francisco started by a former Hermes employee who was trained and made bags for them before starting her own business. They do not make Birkin clones but their own originals and you can pick and choose a design and the material from leather to alligator, get a totally custom one made, and know that you are paying for a bag to use that has been hand sewn just for you without the marketing and the mind games of exclusivity.

I'd like to own an Hermés Kelly Depeche suitcase. I know it's $4000, but it's a bargain if I think about it. I can own it for decades, and when the leather gets worn out, I send it for repair, then I get it back good as new. A lot of Hermés' bags have been known to last decades like the Hermés Kellys. That's better than constantly buying bags every year when things fall apart. But $500k for a bag is reserved for the ultra-rich and extravagant. It's for people who are playing in the market looking for a return on investment while at the same time showing off wealth and social cache. When I do get an Hermés Kelly or Birkin, I wouldn't care too much if the value drops, because I think the craftsmanship and quality is something the market can't take away 2:18 I can't stop smiling as well. Congratulations on your new baby. 😍😘❤️ OMG! She actually cried. 😭

They do have a point where The Birkin value has increased more than gold or the S&P 500. But the key here is if the item is in pristine condition then it would hold its value more than just buying it for everyday use. It's a big amount of money to invest up front but from the business aspect of it, I get it.

human beings are some of the most dumbest creatures on Earth. We are at the top of the food chain and yet people are paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for a couple of yards of leather. I mean then the way they make you beg on your hands and knees not dripping from your nose for the bags. I get it it's exclusivity. You get to say that I sucked up to people who have no respect for me and they allowed me to spend my heart on money on something that they made for less of a couple hundred dollars. That's fine if your insecurities run that deep. The last. Pretend it's because he's bags are actual valuable

Honestly speaking after working a high and fashion industry for almost 10 years. I can tell you all, what Hermès using is pretty much a hunger strategy, which makes the customer hungry for the purse by using starvation to create this craving. Indeed it is actually a very successful marketing and business strategy instead of exclusivity and Symbol of social status. And overall this is actually extremely silly.
