I am more than a little bit tired of the line of argument about how Top 14 clubs or La Rochelle beat Leinster because they have a much bigger budget that enables them to attract star foreign players. Leinster has as big a budget, if not more, than La Rochelle, and don't have to comply with a salary cap. They choose, credit to them, to spend it on home grown talent, but let's not pretend they can field 12 of the Ireland starting XV by paying them less than what La Rochelle pays its players.

Its much more difficult to build a home grown side through your academy than buy the biggest strongest players available. Thats the point. Leinster will never do that because the Irish system would not allow it. La Rochelle might have a salary cap but are you trying to say they dont pay their players more than Leinster pays theirs, I doubt it very much. Leinster’s Ireland players get central contracts so are also paid by the IRFU so Leinster dont have to pay them the same salaries as French sides. Those that arent on central contracts get paid nothing like French based players but they are incentivised to stay in Ireland in various ways. The operating model works well but its nothing like the likes of La Rochelle and its private ownership that pays for talent.
@johnnyguitar6697

@@dairet1945 Because you think every La Rochelle / Top 14 player gets paid a fortune? Sure, proven international players get a nice salary, but you have players getting a fraction of this as well, otherwise they wouldn't be able to stay within the salary cap. Also, your point would be valid if Leinster only had a handful of Irish international, less so when 80% of their starting XV are of international grade.

@@dairet1945 I actually did. If you want an apple to apple comparison, you have to integrate the IRFU contracts for Irish internationals, and the tax rebates sportsmen are getting in Ireland. When you do this, you realize the budgets are more or less equivalent.

Stuart Barnes in The Times: "The Leinster back-up fly half fits into both his club’s and country’s system. He makes a decent fist of being the imitation Sexton. But those games for Ireland were against teams incapable of responding to the Irish game plan. The plan is fluid, Sexton is superb at changing the point of attack with a late pass or kick. In the final we witnessed the flaws of Byrne, the back-up. When La Rochelle grabbed the game, the home side needed someone to reboot another Leinster plan. Instead he seemed to go through the motions, kicking long and without threat, enabling Brice Dulin to instigate waves of counterattacks, or Antoine Hastoy to mix and match the game and keep his side surging forward. Farrell sets great store by loyalty. It is an admirable trait, but loyalty and faith become negatives if the eyes have to be screwed shut to avoid seeing the reality. Fingers crossed for the main man, but it is hard to deny that Byrne may not be the shadow Sexton that Ireland need.”

I think the trouble is, everyone is holding Johnny Sexton as the reference point. Let Johnny Sexton play his style and give Ross Byrne a chance show Ross Byrne style. Eh if you don’t win most of those earlier games you won’t be in the final. There is a lot of rubbish being spoken on here though. La Rochelle over the last 3 seasons have just been a tiny bit better than Leinster. That’s it. Not much more to say. Leinster have been the second best team in Europe for most of the last 5 years. Practically nothing changed from last season with almost identical results. If there were areas that cost them it was the kicking game and the scrum. The scrum has been a weakness for a while. The poor kicking was harder to fathom. Ryan, Furlong and Henshaw going off so early were big blows though in fairness.

Leo Cullen needs to give Ross Byrne the reins, give him the opportunities to make mistakes and let him come to the game with no Sexton in mind. it's a 7 country competition, love Joe but more descriptive analysis of choices taken, moves made would be nice. It isn't underachieving to make a final, ever. I'm not sure it's useful or supportive of not just the 2nd best team for the last 2 years, but indisputably the players of the best rugby to watch anywhere in the world outside of New Zealand, and the best club rugby match of this or several other years. It's off to be having a conversation on that match without mentioning the pure dismantling of La Rochelle early on. Also, not to call the ref unfair as it's subjective and there's a lot of different views, but Wayne Barnes, Ben O'Keefe or Luke Pierce ref that match and I don't see La Rochelle getting back to within a score - a very wide interpretation of the gate at the ruck. I don't know if there was a single 'in from the side' given, and I have this image of Skelton at full stretch reaching across a ruck to slow the ball. If the biggest human in history is stretching laterally it would seem to me the gate's too wide.

I got slated at the start of the season for stating that Leinster have stagnated, albeit at a very high level. I think the last two weekends, alongside the lack of a trophy for since 2021 have proved that is the case. The recruitment of Nienaber should be a good nudge in the right direction for Leinster however there is a deeper rooted culture that needs addressing. Regardless of how future results go in the build up to final weekends this team desperately needs to learn the true meaning of humility and respect. @@Chris-vw8yj they won't win another EC unless they give the first team regular games against better opposition. Sending a below strength team to South Africa for example. How many of the starters in the final had played at that intensity since the final last year? The 6 nation's has nothing to do with it, different set up. Hopefully Nienaber will change that and also get our "world class" back row and second row firing. Essentially Leinster are like PSG, can waltz through the league but at the business end of the cup they're unable to play against hardened teams. The perfect example of the change in mindset required was Henshaw having a go at Skeleton. D'Arcy used to do the same thing against Munster. Just play the game and let your performance do the talking. We're always quick enough to say Munster have a chip on their shoulder but can't see it in our own.

@@bobmorgan6333 it's hard to say what to change, both finals have been close and down to the wire. Change one kicking error clearing our lines and that could have been the match. Whether that's nerves like against England in the six nations or just not being game hardened I don't know. I think Toulouse were a good test though. We could've have lost by more with tired bodies from a 2 week SA tour. And Skelton was mouthing off loads instigating a lot of it. Seemed to be a tactic, not that he's dirty, once he noticed James Ryan's head injury he took care of him and pointed him out to the ref. It's a final though everyone was pumped, there was mouthing on both sides, nothing wrong with that as long as they don't give penalties away. I come from a basketball background though so trash talk is very welcome.

@@Chris-vw8yj absolutely down to the wire. Still have to get across the line though. Exposure to those situations will give a team confidence to go and actually do it. That exposure has to be more frequent than twice a season though. The only viable option for that kind of tight game is sending the majority of the first team to South Africa in the league and up to Ravenhill. A big part of the problem is we have too many players of a similar standard. No one is taking the next step and going on to be consistently world class. Van Der Flier was supposedly the last but truth be told he's been at pretty much the same standard since 2016, I never bought into the talk that he wasn't good enough for international games.

One of many reasons that Leinster lost. Hard to lay all the blame on the tighthead. Ross Byrne missing two conversions cost ye, Leinsters ill discipline at the breakdown and maul defence cost ye, not kicking more penalties cost ye, not exiting from your own 22 properly cost ye, loosing J.Ryan, Henshaw & Furlong cost ye (not their fault obviously), Ross Byrne not going into the pocket for a droppie cost ye, Ross Byrne never looking like a viable running option with ball in hand(always sat deep and shipped the ball on, never stuck defenders to give team mates space) cost ye. Lots of reasons and to be fair it was still only 1 point, not a hammering. They managed that second half poorly, should've attacked like they did in the first 20 mins. Gutted for them though, I wanted a Leinster win (even as a Munster man)

Irish rugby is overated! World Cup is the big test coming and I don't see the Irish doing it. Maybe not even making a semi final again! Beating the All Blacks a few times during the last 10 years and having a club team that has dominated a tournament that didn't represent the best countries teams in the world is not a reason to be so boastfull. South Africa join URC and are likely going 2 for 2. Should tell us something!

It’s a false ranking as SA and France have been a bit off form for a couple of years. Ireland/Leinster cannot compete with an elite powerful pack for 80 mins. It’s another QF exit for them this World Cup. This result proves England probably would have beat Ireland in Dublin last game in the six nations if it wasn’t for the red card. Their pack just not quite at the level it has to be physically. Technically they are the best, but rugby is different you need elite power.

If Leinster has it hard just imagine the SA teams. The salary cap for SA teams is half of what Leinster has. There is only three or four foreigners playing for all the South African teams combined. Then add a government imposed racial qouta on the whole squad, including coaches and backroom staff and then you can tell us how hard Leinster has it compared to others. South Africa has 132 South Africans playing for foreing clubs in the top leagues in the world and we cannot use them due to a laughable salary cap and 90% of those players have the wrong skin color. SA rugby is so cheap our URC teams can't fly direct to play their European games, it takes them longer to get to Europe then what it use to take to get to New Zealand or Australia. I love the fact that our SA teams are playing in the URC and Heineken Cup but please stop crying about things being hard for Irish teams in Europe. 😂

Leinster is properly rated. They played a 2nd team against a disrespected and very motivated munster si, e and they lost by a point to an excellent la rochelle team. Leinstewasre missing sexton,, and James Ryan loss was huge. I still think leinster needs to be aggressive in the market thioff-seasonon. They need an older commanding lock next to ryan who can shoulder the burden. Ryan Baird isn't ready yet, and neither is Joe McCarthy. Jason Jenkins can't stay healthy, and Ross Molony isn't of that level. Leinster should try and land someone like Lood De Jager, who has tonnes of international experience. He's robust and would cause a lot of headaches in the same way Will Skleton does. I would also bring in a loose head to replace Healy long term and feel that a bulkier winger at 14 would be hugely beneficial. Jimmy O'Brien and Jordan Larmour are solid, but another big wing could make a massive difference.
