When Massimiliano Allegri left Juventus in May 2019, he left behind a record-breaking legacy. The manager won the Serie A title in each of his five seasons in charge, achieved four straight league and cup doubles, and reached two Champions League finals, consolidating Juve’s place as the top dog of Italian football.
But since returning to Turin in 2021, following two years out of a job, the Italian coach has been unable to recapture the magic of his first spell, finishing 16 points adrift of champions Milan last term with the club’s worst points tally in over a decade, and beginning the new campaign in horror form. The Bianconeri have recorded more red cards (3) than wins (2) from their opening nine games in all competitions, rank 12th in Serie A for expected goals, and have lost the first two games of their Champions League group for the first time in their history. A 1-0 loss to Monza, who are playing in Serie A for the first ever time, had yet to win this season, and had Raffaele Palladino taking charge of his first ever senior game as manager, has only compounded this early season misery.
Unsurprisingly, pressure is now mounting on the Juve boss, with concerns over his ability to turn the side’s form around and match his rivals tactically. Meanwhile, the fact he signed a four-year contract on returning, worth a reported €9million per year, has led to fears that the club simply cannot afford to get rid of him. But has the legendary coach, who just last year was tipped for the Real Madrid job, really fallen behind his peers in the Italian game? On today’s EFD Explained, we’re going to take look.

Yes , Allegri should have been sacked after Benfica or Monza. Tuchel, Zidane & Pocchetino were all available, but now sticking to Allegri till November at least due to financial issues will cause Juve more problems on and off the pitch!

I just don't understand why they didn't stick with pirlo, he had a vision the fans knew they needed a squad overhaul and although they lost the 10 in a row possibly bringing back a manager that had been touted for every big job for 2 seasons yet getting none should of been a sign that the game was passing Allegri by. Watching his football was a pain to watch and that champions League final defeat to Real should of been a sign that his days battling with the top managers was over.

Dude this is clear with a clear view in the rear view mirror. But the reality is football club owners take risks with choosing managers. Some of which pay off and some don’t. It’s easy for armchair fans to say “oh you should’ve done this or that” after the fact, but football isn’t played with a rear view mirror, it’s played in the present and with a view to the future. You take decisions, some pay off and some don’t.

yeah and also the club didn't back them up, thats the most contradictory. the club preached changed, hired a new coach with different style, different approach, but juventus as a club forgot that they have to change along, they did the opposite.hire some random player hoping the coach will figure something out while pirlo and sarri are system coaches with very very specific requirements

Juventus definitely got too comfortable in Serie A and now they're watching the likes of both Milan clubs, Napoli etc pass them by. Hell when Allegri first left Juve, a key area that needed big improvement was the midfield as shown in the beat down vs Ajax IN TURIN (scoreline doesn't reflect how the game went at all. Juve got ripped apart). And when he came back the midfield was STILL a problem and arguably even worse than when he left. That swap deal with Barca never made sense to me from either side. Champions League wise, they haven't been the same since 2018 vs Real with the controversial pen and Buffon red card

Allegri isn't completely done in football however he needs to take a lower job to get his reputation back up and to give him more experience so that he can modernise his tactics (ie Lazio,Lyon,Sevilla, etc). I completely agree with the other comments Pirlo should have been given more time, I'm sure he'll be back in the future after he's got more managerial experience.

he actually has one now given the discrepancies in experience within this Juventus. Juventus has problems since the end of the 18/19 season. The midfield is #1 for the start, the over reliance of old players, unable to integrate some good talents like De Ligt who's now at Bayern Munich and Kulusevski is now at Spurs. Poor transfer signings and dealings like Ramsey, Arthur and Rabiot. The changing of managers when results go up in smoke and the renaissance of the Milan clubs, Napoli, Roma and the rise of Atalanta. Juventus needs a massive rebuild from top to bottom otherwise they will disappear to mid table obscurity like the Milan clubs in the 2010s. Sacking Allegri will not change anything at Juventus even if his tactics is obsolete in the current climate of football.

Allegri and to certain extent Juventus dominated possibly the weekest era of Serie A ever. Milan and Inter, Juve's true Perennial rivals were undergoing multiple ownership changes and constant rebuilds.. Roma and Napoli are reasonably big clubs but they don't have the finances/Brand recognition to compare with Juventus..unlike the Milanese clubs that are global brands like Juventus. Juventus still spends a lot of $$$ compared to other Italian clubs especially wages but their monopisation of talent in Serie A in 2010s has gone away..Scamacca, Raspadori, Tonali, Barella all would have been hoovered up by Juventus in the 2010s but they joined other clubs. Allegri is outdated, but Juventus' domination had a lot to do with the rest of the league being in chaos and now their rivals have caught up...Allegri's style was working because everyone else was just terrible, but that's not the case anymore and there has been a revolution in Serie A with very progressive minds like Pioli, Gasperini, Italiano all doing well with attacking football. Juve's cycle is over..for now anyway

I don't think that's an entirely fair assessment. Juventus was one of the strongest teams in Europe during those years, and had arguably one of the best defensive line-ups in football history, and for a couple of seasons a world-class midfield with players like Pirlo, Pogba, Vidal and Marchisio. The other clubs, especially both Milano sides, didn't step up to the challenge (although Roma and Napoli were frustratingly close at times), but that doesn't detract from how good Juventus was during those years. The question is more how much Allegri had to do with it as opposed to just having quality players. 🤷‍♂️

4:05 i dont agree that Pirlo had a clear way to play the game, there was no identity to his Juve, much like Allegri's in a way, I dont think he fielded the same formation once in the entire season. While he wanted to have possession and you could see that there were some fluid gameplay at times, every single time the game had a variable come into play Juve's entire tactics would go down the drain. I remember every single counter from the opposing team was a dangerous one, our defensive posturing was absolutely horrendous. You could argue that that is just an offensive minded team but its ridiculous that they could only train in the offensive side of things. Im not gonna argue with IF's but Pirlo's success can be mostly attributed to Ronaldo's success, Dybala was injured most of that season, but he still was important when he came back. Cant also forget that Chiesa had a triumphant season under Pirlo but he was mostly already proven at Fiorentina. I do agree with the rest of the video though. I would definitely have given Pirlo another year, especially since his last quarter of the year was a success. We got a spot in Champions League by a hair's breadth, after winning vs Conte's super dominant Inter. He also won us a cup, but I think our management made the same mistake they made with Allegri 2 years back. They thought our squad was better than what and where we got. Basically I believe a better coach wouldn't have outperformed Allegri's last year, or Pirlo's year, at least not by a large margin. At the end of the day, management is at fault. They have gotten blinded by pride and greed. Our team is more a brand than a team now. Had we chose to solidify our midfield in 2017 instead of going after an aging superstar, we would've had much more success nowadays. Instead we went after the clout that Ronaldo had and we are paying this dearly.

I think Allegri will turn things around, he may be a fossil but one that is proven and trusted at Juventus. I think the high wage players are the issue, they take no responsibility no turn up in games and its not the managers job to make an amateurs into a professional at this level. I bet he will get some players back from injury but still have an underwhelming season, but one that is stable enough to build on for next season. Top 4 will be decided by which teams can win despite injuries so I'm expecting they just make it barely.

You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the enemy. A bit of a drastic phrasing but all in all it clearly sums up the 2nd spell of Allegri at Juventus. Countless mistakes in formations, lineups, player changes. He's literally just kept the job because he is on too much money. Yet Allegri himselfs wants to get praised because he refused big money from the saudis. As Juventini we all have to be thankful that atleast in 2 years he will be gone.

Juventus are having a similar problem like Man UTD when Fergie left in keeping old out of form players like Alex Sandro, Bonucci and Cuadrado like Cuadrado is still at Juve. The board the owner are hiring an old out form manager and living in the past let's be honest, Allegri is no tactician he only thrives with stars and no competitors today's football demands youth and exciting high pressing football.

there is no question his antics off field in the press is destroying us every day, calling awful performances good and throwing anyone he can under the bus, even in `unknowing` interviews before a game. He has lost the locker room and burned so many bridges and our players have 0 morale . on the field we are a directionless mess of a formation with 0 morale and he is absolutely out of his depth. Until he goes we are slipping into obscurity, and if he`s there in the winter window there will be a mass exodus. #AllegriOut
