Are Mesa Rectifier Amps Obsolete?

I play a Mesa Triple Rec, dial it in & boost it with a few overdrive pedals. Are these amps just old relics, or are they still relevant today?

They are absolutely relevant today, I saw Animals As Leaders last year and Tosin was using a Dual Rec. Tons of local metal/hardcore/thrash bands are using Dual and Single recs. These amps will never go out of style. There will always be room for 5150s and Dual rectifiers in heavy music.

I've owned three Rectos, two triples and a dual, and once you tighten up their bottom end with a boost in the preamp, you're there, you've got a modern metal tone that is as relevant today as it was 30 years ago when the Rectos were new. Only competing companies want you to think that Rectos are obsolete. They're not.

why to use a rectro that needs us to "tighten up their bottom end with a boost in the preamp" if there are other modern options that dont need that ?

I just bought a Rec right before Christmas this year and I find myself falling deeper and deeper in love with it. No boost. There’s a period for sure where you’ll struggle to dial it in, but when you take heed to the manual and dial it in with an attenuator so you can get the volumes up, this amp absolutely CRUSHES. Highly relevant as it has been for the last 25 or so years. The Rec is probably the 3rd most recorded amp in history, I’m willing to bet. First is probably a Fender and second is the Marshall 1959 model.

Nice video mate. Love the recto. I love hearing it on recordings and in live setting. Personally I’ve got one. It’s not as cutting edge or flexible as my KSR heads but sometimes I get curious and plug the rectifier in. It’s fun time especially when you’ve spent some time away from it. They have their own thing going on and are legendary for a reason. 🙏

Still relevant, especially with the number of boost and overdrive options available now. You can sculpt whatever you need out of a recto. I personally don’t get along with the play feel of rectos but I totally get the appeal.

Volume definitely helps with rectos, if you’re able to get it to the output and master on half it opens up a load and removes any fizz. Totally needs a boost to get proper modern high gain, I’ve also always found having something in the loop helps too (even if you have whatever it is turned off) and also have had good results with an EQ in the loop too. Much prefer these to 5150s

I was considering getting one of these but the Triple Crown 100 was something relatively new and haven’t looked back after getting it. Willie Adler did a demo with it and I put one on layaway as soon as someone had it in stock. On a separate note, the price went up $1,100 on the TC in just two years. That seems like a lot, more than the next boutique amplifier I’m thinking about. The double/triple rects. and their lineage will be relevant for quite some time to come, more so now because of being better able to season to suit by just adding a boost. Off on a tangent, but I’m considering an EBMM Jason Richardson Cutlass and can’t decide between 6 or 7. I’ll try the 6 at the music store this week and compare it to a JP something 7

The Master actually has a massive impact in tone. Low settings sound very scooped boomy and fizzy while around noon you get a lot more mids. I prefer something around 12-1 o clock. Also I think the Vintage mode actually sounds more “modern” because it’s way more balanced. Of course modern mode does the “Recto-thing” though. Great demo!

Finally got myself a Rev G Dual Rectifier last year because I wanted to have a chance to mess around and understand it. After some time with it I just didn't care for how the mids sit with it (even with a boost) Great for chugs but not much else. In my last band my other guitarist had a Triple Rec and his notes got lost in the mix a lot all the while my Peavey 5150 was front and center. I don't think they're obsolete I just think they're great for certain things. Traded mine for a PRS Archon 100 and have been much happier.

I recently got a rev G too and honestly, its an incredibly bad sounding amplifier. I wanted so bad to love it but there just isnt enough tightness. Even with an OD its just super midrangey and loose. I ended up running a metal zone into the FX as a substitute for the onboard preamp and it sounds amazing. The gain is so tight and has the perfect frequencies accentuated. Its a pity with these amps, i just feel the pre amp hasnt got enough boost in it naturally and its hard to boost and cut the frequencies you really want. One of the biggest mistakes mesa made was not putting their classic 5 band GEQ onboard. it probably would have negated the need for all of this boosting and modding everybody does to theirs.

Ya they still definitely work but require a good boost to get it where it needs to be for modern tones. The thing is that a triple rec is the price of three or four iconics, and you still have to buy a boost and gate for it, where as the iconic is pretty well good to go out of the box (a boost is still good but doesn't need it nearly as much as a saggy Mesa). Mesa cabs are still king though.

Still the best at the BROOTZ if you know how to dial them in and track em. There is no bigger sound. But like years past, even today they are not for everyone. Whenever a new metal amp comes out they are described as Mesa-like, 6505/5150 like or marshall like. Until that stops, every amp i mentioned is still relevant today. While hyped amps die out, those ones, while not perfect, always remain.

I use ch2 for rhythm and ch3 for solos. I use modern mode on ch2 and vintage mode on ch3. Vintage mode requires higher tone settings because it has less bass than modern mode. Modern mode is scooped of too much mid to use for solos. The important thing with Recs is to dial out the brittle high frequencies and not to use too much gain. On ch2 (modern mode), I lower the bass and treble compared to my settings on ch3 (vintage mode). With these settings it sounds great. Without the perfect settings, this amp is not good. Dial it in and it’s terrific. I use a Boss SD1 overdrive (output high, gain low, tone moderate).

Man people are kind of polarized in the comments. Love or hate them rectos have a particular sound and I thought Jared made the amp sound good. I have an old 2 channel triple rec I got in 1999. I boost it with a gridslammer too and it sounds fine. I have a bunch of other amps too and I still use it. It’s not as versatile as my Jp2c which is my favorite Mesa amp but I still enjoy it and play it pretty regularly. Also I have never had a single issue with the amp and it’s almost 24 years old.

Just me but the Dirty Tree’s frequency when it breaks up is a little harsh on my ears. I maybe be the very best pedal for a TripRec. I liked the GRIDSLAMMER but was good a little fuzzy. Dirty Tree is good but might need a EQ to see if there is any shape you can bring to it. Many factors going on there that I probably never understand. Small issues only. I think rectifiers are far from being obsolete, nothing off the shelf sounds quite sounds as angry as a rectifier. They don't need a boost to be tight (talking about a multi-watt), it depends how hard you hit and the pickups going into the front end. However you have to play super clean as they are very unforgiving without a boost.

Plumes OD - 2 channel dual rec - 10 band in the loop with a SD Thrash factor creates the best 6 string tones. Crank up the master around noon and compensate volume with the 10 band is the secret. I run it through a mess 4x12 in my garage but gonna look into a Hesu 2x12 next. I think the demon speakers will give that mix of vintage 30/Greenback combo I want. Serious question. Have you had a hearing test, lately? I ask because you dial all of your amps in to be extremely bright and maybe it's because of hearing loss in the highs (that's the first thing to go as we get older). However, the Mesa was dialed in over the top bright. Sounds like a fizzy mess and way too much gain. Also, noticed some clipping in your audio, here and there.
