Are My Comet Goldfish Spawning

So a little while back I thought maybe some of my goldfish might be showing signs of spawning behaviors. My plan was to separate them and put a new, clean mop head into the tank for the eggs to cling onto. I didn't quite get around to it but they seem to have gotten started anyway ...
I had the idea to throw a bunch of cord into the water as a standby, but ... I just don't know.
If you have any experience with this sort of thing, please comment below and share with me what I will need to know to keep some of these little guys ( &gals) alive!
Thanks for watching!

Nice fish. In my experience having raised comets and fantails in my pond (summer)/ Aquarium (winter) live in Baltimore we get between 20-30 surviving babies per year in the pond at end of season in fall. Probably that represents around 10% of all eggs.

It’s ok..ur the best youtuber ever 😍but yeh next time you must have..the 1 female comet and the 2 male comets..make sure you have an airstone in the tank/pond or whatever ur breeding them in..and also you must have live floating pond plants in there..NOT DUCKWEED*..a plant with lots of roots..and then they spawn in the roots of the plants 🌱!! Good luck 😉🐠🐟

I did keep the one that lived but as to what they looked like ... there are a few video updates here on them but basically they look like very tiny versions of the goldfish. A little bit like tadpoles at first but soon they started to look like little goldies. I don't have them anymore as they died when we moved half way across the country to our new home. :-( Too bad, they were some beautiful fish. Thanks for watching!

As the water gets warmer, they get more interested in breeding from what I've seen. I've been able to separate the males and females by their behaviors. Males tend to do a LOT of belly shoving and the females are the ones running like mad to escape it ... Hope that helps!

Can a 3-4 inches shubunkin goldfish bear egg already?, my 2 shubunkins are doing the same thing, i dunno if it is mating or fighting but they canna look strange to me, what should I do?
@JTBear
@JTBear 6 жыл бұрын
Mating can be very aggressive and sure looks like fighting the first few times you see it. 3-4 inches would be about 2 years old(ish) so they may be trying to breed but I wouldn't expect much from it. You can try separating them or just let them keep at it until they are done and see what's swimming around next week!

What about when they're in a pond? Harder to separate them. Also, if I do manage to keep them apart while the female lays the eggs, do I keep her separated or will she eat the eggs as well? Seems to me if I put her back in with the other fish, she'll get harassed again. Poor thing seems to be jumping up out of the water to get away!
@JTBear
@JTBear 9 жыл бұрын
Ingrid McCleary Much harder to separate the fish if they are in a pond. Perhaps you could put in somewhere she can escape the more amorous males? I don't know if she will eat the eggs or not, interesting question there. They will undoubtedly harass her until they get exhausted which can cause a great deal of damage to the female in the process. The large goldfish in my sump tank now was separated from the rest because of the damage from the males 'loving' behaviours and has only just begun to seem healed after almost a year apart. Poor girl indeed. If you are wanting to raise fish fry, then search for info on spawning mops. They are easy to make and the eggs attach to them quite easily it seems. Good luck with them!

Hey JT, Never tried to raise any fish from eggs. I've read about it alot over the years. But thats about it. Like has been mentioned. You'll want to separate the males from females, after spawning. Not sure how many different places you have to put them. But if it's just the pond and sump. I'd put the female in the sump alone. And just hope she doesn't eat the eggs. Some fiberglass window screen could be enough to separate her from the eggs too? looking good! :)
@JTBear
@JTBear 10 жыл бұрын
Oooo, window screen! That's a good idea, I think I have some in the shed out back. I'll have to look. Right now, the fish are all in the tank and it's just the eggs in the sump. They're not looking too good though ... :(

That's spawning behavior for sure. That in its own suggests very good water quality. It's nice to see that it can get that good in aquaponics. Anyway...my experience says the female will eventually die if she can't get some rest. I've never had goldfish spawn (historically I've just fed them to other fish), but at least get one of the two males (calico and the white-gold ones) out and see how things go from there.

While I can't tell you 100% how to do it, some helpful hints I gotten say that seperating the males from the females for at least a couple weeks may help. Also, having the water temperature closer to spring or summer should encourage them to start spawning. Making spawning mops (super easy, just type it into the search bar here on YT) will help you get more eggs from the spawn as well because they prefer to spawn in lake weeds and reeds. If you can start a water flea tank before you get the fish to breed then you can supply healthy, natural foods for the fry when they do hatch, they're called daphnia or something like that I think ... Good luck Razwan!

That's only 3 fish ... how can I tell if it's a comet or not?
@zezekingyo2374
@zezekingyo2374 6 жыл бұрын
JT Bear ok:) and yes there are only three goldfish in this video. FIRST if it's a comet, it's easy to look at its long finnage(fins) first. Notice that the tail is long and their body shape a little bit slender(I found out that fish with longer ribbon looking fins have a more slender body type but that doesn't mean it's a male). Second, comet goldfish aren't named for any single tail varieties with such two toned colors, three toned colors, color spots or other patterns patterns. They are named because their long fins resembles to the traces of a comet. Comet goldfish along with the common goldfish(as seen in your video), are ranged in many colors/patterns, even plain orange, red or plain white. The shubunkin is more of a comet, but with matted/metallic scales. Both of these scale types together are called nacreous scales. Shubunkins only have calico, and has blue color on top, black, red, and white on all parts. There are three types of shubunkins: American/Japanese shubunkins are theost noticable because their body shape and long finnage is similar to comets London shubunkins, aka short tailed comets, are comets similar to the common goldfish but with calico pattern. Bristol shubunkins are the rarest types of shubunkins because it only locates in Britain. It has very broad fins, a blunt body, and a very wide fan looking tail that shaped like a heart 💓. Now, these two fish in your video are common goldfish. Common goldfish on the other hand are oldest variety of goldfish, originate in China and are very basic fish. It's easy to tell it by their short fins, long body and short tails. In Japan, they mostly favored common goldfish with white and red pattern because the goldfish with red/white coloration are mostly appreciated. In the Americas, people used their own made up terminology of common goldfish becasuse they are "always be plain old orange". If people see a common goldfish with two or multi-toned colors , like white/red or orange/white patterns, it's wrongly classified as a "comet". As I mentioned before, they are also widely ranged in colors and patterns. You can look into my videos so that you can tell the difference between it if you like!

JT Bear en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comet_(goldfish this is the info about a comet goldfish en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_goldfish and this is the info about the common goldfish:-) www.google.com/search?q=ワキン金魚フナ&client=ms-android-metropcs-us&prmd=imvn&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjUguXizsfaAhWLjVkKHWdOCgAQ_AUIESgB&biw=360&bih=512 not trying to be overworked but I typed "wakin goldfish" on Google translate in Japanese then copied the translated Japanese words to get images. "Wakin" in Japanese term is a Wakin goldfish in Funa type. Both wakin goldfish and common goldfish are really confusing because the common goldfish is also the term "wakin" . But in America, we found out Wakin goldfish are a long bodied goldfish similar to the common, but with intermediate fantail.

JT Bear you are very welcome! Mind you I went to the trip in Japan to find the rivers and lakes to get this far on finding goldfish related fish! Quite odd to see kimbuna, onagabuna, hibuna, and herabuna(carassius fish) all together in one giant lake! Really confusing and hard to understand them but you are very pleasant to find this out! ja.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/フナ. I still translated the word "Funa" into Japanese:-).

@JTBear
@JTBear 9 жыл бұрын
While I can't say for certain, this behavior started once the tank began to warm up in early spring. My theory is that the warmer water got them all 'revved up' and ready to go. I've also heard that regular water changes may remove some hormone from the water and without it they are more inclined to breed as well. SolidGold has some great goldfish info, if I recall, perhaps there may be some answers on her channel? Sorry I can't be more helpful, good luck!

Maybe there should put more female in there so there are more to chase. Less boys way more girls. Spawning mops, made with green yarn. Remove the mops with eggs attaches every day and replace them, you could be getting eggs for days. Wonder if you ever did it again.

Had the video running(again) while replying. The para-cord. As far as being In there. IDK, but I don't see any problem with it. I don't think it'll do much for breaking down or leaching in the near future. I'd say just put it in while needed, and remove it when it's job is done. And everything should be ok?? Sry, not a clue where the video is. But one I was watching of koi spawning in an above ground pool. They had places built up with uhhhh, stuff. So it was real shallow water. Shallow enough thet the top inch or so of the fish where out of the water. Maybe something like... one of your coffee cans turned upside down. And placed on the bottom, so you have a couple of inches of water above it. Tie/zip tie the cord to the top it?
@JTBear
@JTBear 10 жыл бұрын
An interesting idea. I could set something up like that, I drink enough coffee that I seem to have an endless supply of those containers. I've noticed that some of the koi farms use a rope with many 'balls' of string tied all the way along it. They will place these all through the breeding tank and collect the eggs in those, but then again I've seen people just massage the fish until they 'release' into a bowl too so ... KZfaq is a funny place, and it truly shows just how many different ways a person can get the same thing done! I'm thinking I may have more to learn on this adventure ...

Definitely spawning. And MAN that female is LOADED with eggs. So fat. Hopefully she released them all and did fine. Separating them is a terrible idea. She was ready to spawn and she needs those boys to help her release the eggs. If you want to raise the babies, you'll need to remove the eggs or the fish. I would let the males exhaust the female, pull her for a day or so... And then put her back. She needs to release ALL the eggs or she can get egg bound, which is often fatal.
