The problem is that anyone can be a rapper now. So it's turned from the nicest niggas getting deals to anyone with fruity loops and a mic can make music and get popping. That's the issue. The consumer has always gone by what the main stream radio plays. So when you're getting trash music 24/7 with a catchy 808 beat that every producer is using then they're going to consume it. Lil Nas X and Doja Cat were meme troll artists that are now legitimate pop stars. That tells you the level of talent that's getting over in todays landscape.

I have a real question, when it's said "Let's bring Hiphop back" does that mean let's bring originality back to the game or let's bring NYC boom bap back? and ppl pattern there flows, cadence everything based off how it use to be? cause there is alot of dope music out besides the mumble melody drill rap.. you just have to tap into those areas, regions and markets to find that music cause it's not being pushed to the masses either for BPM reasons, subject matter etc
@Skipakares
@Skipakares 2 жыл бұрын
I’m gonna say boom bap not specifically from NY but different areas and regions. Some form of originality needs to come back as well as new era needs to pay homage to the ones who came before them. As far as rhymes be able to freestyle off the top and be creative as far writing ability. I agree w/ u as far tapping into different areas

@@tfromcali89 The "game" has always been run by old men who choose who to make popular. Older emcees are still making music. The old guys market to the young and exploit the young. That's why all those legendary emcees had such fucked up contracts. The young are signed so they can be exploited. If you think an artist determines whether or not they get popular, you don't know how the business goes. As far as your first statement, Some of those emcees best work was after they were in "the game" for a few years. Most of those cats got signed at 16 and 17. For example, ATCQ were teens when they dropped Bonita Applebum which was a bangin' single, but their classic album, "Low End Theory" came out when they were in their mid 20s. Which was old when I was coming up in HIP HOP. It's always been a young man's game to play, but it's old man's game to run.

@@zshakur We get that the older men run the game as far as labels and contracts. You and I both know that most rappers today are trash. Though nowadays the older rappers are not selling as much as the younger ones with the exception of Cole, Kendrick, Drake etc. Not because younger kids can’t relate to them. It’s just some of them are making music when a lot of the audience is unfamiliar with their impact and their longevity isn’t there. Some of the older rappers agree hip hop is for the youth. Even Rakim, Kane, G Rap, LL Cool J, and KRS, some of the best rappers in the eighties made their first albums as teenagers and became successes because of that. Nas and Biggie made classics at the ripe ages of 20 and 21. Some of the young have talent and are signed because of their popularity and what they can do with their audience. Older men run the game as far as business but the young seem to be running the charts.

Hip hop today is a shell of its former self. I can't really even call it "hip-hop" anymore .... Not nearly as good as it was 20 years ago, im talking about the culture of hip hop, today there are more deaths and less consciousness in the music. How? If people are making more money and have more access to music and resources then ever before , how is it regressing so much? You need to ask these critical questions.... Is hip hop today truly HIP HOP anymore, a voice for the people of the oppressed ? Do we as black people TRULY control the narritive on how we want people to see us, in ALL aspects of our lives, not just the violence , chaos , and death of the community ??? Why does hip hop have to be synonymous with violence and death of another brother , like it really makes me wonder if this music is controlled by us ? Or the corporations that push the views and the charts and the likes

The thing is that theres plenty of talented rappers out there that pick dope beats have bars and are dope song makers but it seems like a lot of people focus on popularity instead of talent so if your popular your hitting on all levels doesn’t mater how your music sound if it’s a vibe somewhere and good marketing will get you over the key word is talent

There should be some kind of new copyright system set up for the artist/ producer to be more in control of sales of there own material. If these streaming companies can’t give you what u want up front, don’t stream my shit or u will be sued. These companies are making so much money off of subscribers and the artists not making shit! There has to be a new idea created for an artist to stream their own shit and be in control of their own destiny.🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

First off, people need to understand that the audience that listens to the type of "hip-hop" these guys are talking about is in their 40s to mid or late 60s. That's why the big stars and "rap/hip-hop" music that has that push or is heard on media outlets is not that. Most of the people still listening and spending money on "rap/hip-hop" music and media is the age group (late teens- early 40s) who listens to what's currently being put out there. Take Method man and Redman for example; still super nice on tracks and puts out timeless music, but their subject matter and maturity of what their speaking on doesn't resignate with the youth outside of the Northeast United States like a Lil baby or NBA Youngboy would. And honestly, the audience who spends their money on it now is not a subject matter and maturity audience. They're an party, gang bang, hype, clout, who's the baddest type of audience, and most of them are on the outside looking in with no idea of how any of the street situations are until their in them. I grew up in the early 90s and love the music of that Era. East and West had a lock on the game then because the majors had the choice of what the public heard. Even the underground had its own mix major DJs like Clue, Do wop, S×S, Juice, Ron G, ect....and if you wasnt being played in any of those circuits, you was only heard in your region. These cats now are utilizing the best of the internet and skipping the old way breaking music was done back then and it doesn't matter where their from now. Lot of goofy shit out here now too though, but you gotta think, the doors was not open for most of the goofy music that people complain about now. They made those doors on their own so they don't owe anyone anything nor will they just be shut out or down by anyone. Especially now that their music is in higher demand than ever. And let's be honest, all of the sneak dissing and little behind the back chatter that most of these young guys hear from the older dudes conversations doesnt help. It really only pushes them harder at being who they are because they know they have your attention now when they were just looking for that in the first place from the elders of the game. Majors just follow trends and love what's happening now as well because it gives them room to push other agendas harder on the youth of minority societies. Things like gay/lesbian sexual orientation and lack of self knowledge/history are big issues that are being either swept under the rug and not addressed correctly. It's so much more to this, but I've said enough here already, lol. But one more thing, these kids making the music don't care about Dr Dre or people from his Era anymore. They figure they don't need his or people like that input or help now because their doing it on their own and simply because the way the game is going and how easy it is for a lot them to get quick money, but not looking at the longevity side of things as much. I myself grew up on Rap-A-Lot and the old school Dungeon Family (Outkast, Goodie Mob, ect) a little more than east and west because I'm from the south, but listened to all. The south never really picked sides in my opinion, just liked good music!! Gone💯✌🏾

I can respect that. As a high school teacher I would like to see the youth in the rap game be more involved culture of Hip Hop on a whole. I’m from the south too but I was always drawn to the origins and culture of Hip Hop that originated in NY and flourished on the west coast with the emergence of NWA. I learned a lot about its visual art and the political impact it had on society back then. Todays youth don’t care for any of that. The want the quickest way to a dollar without putting in hard work to do it and it reflects in their music. A lot of the content they put out sounds the same and looks the same so that’s where the frustration with what they doing comes from.

The beauty of it all is being able to hear something new from something old. G Unit was good at taking a song and rapping about something totally different but still 🔥 especially Banks. I love when I hear something AABA and come up with something altered from that format. Hip Hop coming back lol

There are talented young rappers that actually about the craft and want to advance cue it and be great. But there is no barrier to entry anymore, most don’t care about the craft and culture and no-effort trash is profitable. Make it hard to find the good stuff. Back in the day, Kane and Rakim were king because the audience picked its stars and criteria was based on who was best

@Maria Sofia Emma Sotz dope....it's just in the States you are programmed to a set standard of songs that functions alongside airspace selling ads. No matter the talent, if your record can keep audiences listening to your station to help sell ads and retain revenue thru listeners then you keep doing. Artistic integrity is always at the chopping block in a business endeavor. Most folk I notice are not that invested in music outside of music lovers and those people tend to not be the majority targeted for mass appeal.

@Maria Sofia Emma Sotz wow you know its funny I met Immortal Tech here in the States before the whole "independent" movement kind of became more mainstream. Real hardcore and very political. Would have conversations about various topics before the show. It made me appreciate hip-hop culture in a whole new way. But I'm a early 90s baby so its dope to hear a kindred spirit from Sweeden so into rap music too. We hear that older artist who no longer are viable in our country go overseas and get beloved because they dig the music and culture so much more. But the politics of it sucks. I always wondered why all the DJs don't collectively come together to protest. It would have to be them all to potentially work but I think it would shake up the industry.

There’s already subgenres and subcultures within rap, a lot of them just don’t got a name and are just jumbled into hip hop/rap. “Mumble rap” “boom bap” “trap drill” is just some of the examples. So when they say we should bring hip hop back, I’m thinking about the old school chopped up samples that used to be the wave. I wish that could come back, considering that would bring more individuality and creativeness, but this current generation is just on them faster beats, they don’t wanna slow it down
