The easiest thing about making online friends is that if ur playing a game, u already have something in common with those people cause ur both playing the game

Which is understandable. But there's more to friendship than common interest, so while our hobbies can bring us together more easily, it takes much more to hold it in place.

As someone who has close friends both online and real life, it definitely gets a lot more personal with your IRL friends. It's definitely more intimate when they're in the same room as you. They can eat with you, walk with them. You can hug them, see their face and hear their voice in front of you. Now that isn't to say you can't make deep connection online. I've made some very tight friendships with people online. You can still play video games with them, watch movies with them. And interact with them in other ways too. And plenty of people meet their online friends IRL, sometimes more than once. And those people become their IRL friends. There are many many cases where it goes wrong sure, but there are just as many cases where it goes very very well. Sp to those if you who only have online friends, try and see if you can meet up with them one day. I know it can be very difficult, but it's worth it. You just might meet a best friend, or maybe even a significant other.

Whilst the experiences are definitely different with irl and online friends, I dont think one has more value than the other Whilst yes online friends stops you from experiencing people outside a bubble, its still a person you're talking to, and a bond youre making, overcoming the limitations given by being on the other side of the world Both irl and online friends can be fake, both can have people showing their best side and hiding who they really are, thats not really mutually exclusive However its fair to say its easier to pull off faking who you are online

You make online friends because of interests, while you make IRL friends because of circumstance. Not to say you can't share interests with IRL friends, but if they lived a town over you'd likely would never have met them. While online friends you'd meet regardless if your interests align.

I mean not really alot of online friends are made through a hobby like gaming and most of the time went you talk it's about gaming. So I wont say you will meet regardless of interest. So I would say online friends are met through circumstances too since if you werent into a certain hobby you wouldn't have certain online friends

I think you had it when you said it's all perspective, but then ran in the other direction. I started out backwards and had a lot of friends IRL. issue is, as I am, I was basically the walking joke of the group (Legally blind since birth, big funny) It gave me a massive self confidence issue which persists to this exact moment still, and makes trusting real life friends insanely difficult. Yet my small group of friend I speak to daily, in voice calls, for hours. Truly cherish me for me, who I am, I suck at games, cause of my eyesight, yet they always invite me to them regardless.. I never got that from anyone in person, I got quite the opposite. So if the goal of life is for me to find happiness.. why go out of my way to try and find the 1 decent person in my backwater town? I have those decent people online, and it's helped me more then I could have ever imagined, and the more games I play, more shows I watch that others can relate to, my bubble grows bigger, and bigger.

I am happy that you have good online friends. I think one can only even dare to try making irl friends if they're somewhat attractive to start with, which unfortunately includes many things that you're not responsible for. The boundary between irl and online friends is just a joke if you're not blessed to be at least looking normal having no issues.
@hyperkun
@hyperkun 3 жыл бұрын
Well yeah I got bullied in elementary so I didn't really have friends until middle school when couple of people got transferred into out class and I became friends with a funny guy, rest of the class became actually normal, I felt more welcomed. Now in middle high its all chill, at first I was really normie on the groupchat I kinda started to become more asocial sometimes, but after a month I actually had a great best friend that I opened more to, he introduced me to anime, made me more of an extrovert and with whom I sit on Discord a lot as well, especially now that there is online learning on a daily basis; we just play, talk about anime, listen to openings, throw names at eachother like good friends do, but also support eachother. The whole class is basically really chill as well. I had some online friends; the first was my best friend for past 3 years who was a cousin of my classmate, we played Minecraft, then Fortnite, but he slowly changed into a weirder cringy, annoying guy that listens to Polish rap etc. he even fought me for stupid reasons on Messenger Now I just have some online friends that I basically know from the best friend from my current class. And yeah I knew some random people from Twitter or Facebook as well that weren't as significant. But I can surely say that IRL friends are much better and provide an actual relationship; online friends wont last forever.
@KumaNicol
@KumaNicol 3 жыл бұрын
Friendships in general don't last forever, and it's silly to believe they will. You enjoy them while they are there, and hope to leave on the best terms possible. That's all you can do. Also, at the risk of sounding a bit aggressive, not meaning to by the way. I just blatently disagree with the entire IRL vs online argument in the first place. bottom line is. I told an online friend I wanted to die. and they never gave up on me, helped me through it and convinced me to continue living, when no one I gave that same chance in person did. If they aren't a "true friend" then I don't want any. I'll take what I have.
@hyperkun
@hyperkun 3 жыл бұрын
@@KumaNicol yeah you're right A true friend is what is important. And yeah they don't last forever, but you just gotta hope you can meet more great new friends then in the future if it wont work out with the current ones. But sometimes maybe you'll stay as friends for your whole life Unfortunately the online friend I mentioned was really unsuportive when I lost my phone, or when I was in a bad mental state overall /: But the classmate I mentioned; I can actually talk about life with him
@KumaNicol
@KumaNicol 3 жыл бұрын
@@hyperkun And I am very happy yoiu have that. I hope to have another IRL friend like the one that moved away young someday. it's great fun, but with my current ones. I feel like I am forcing a fake persona and smile just to please them, while they basically just use me as a joke. I may be used to it but it's still something I avoid most times. But on my calls I laugh and show real emotions, hell, only person to ever hear me cry is maybe.. 2 online friends in calls.. idk I just seem to connect with them so well, regardless if were a few hours away and can't "actually" hang out, we watch our weekly anime together, play some games and unwind, and I'm super thankful for that.

Tbh for someone who did grow up playing Super Mario but without internet games ( if you know you know) I can tell that I have no issues making friends irl that is why I have no problem moving around when I have a chance. I also can make a friend or two online but am i careful ? Yes. I do not make friends through gaming , as it is a dangerous place for that. Nor do i hung out in discord often. For me it is mostly bonding through art projects and just supporting each others creative journey, through banter etc. I also try interacting through voice messages if i feel connection and other ways to get a sense of who the person really is . Because sometimes it all is good and dandy but once you talked with person through audio you like hm, i don't feeling it. But did i make real friends through online interactions in the past ? Yes. We met, we hung out, and now like 8 years later we still friends. So i think it doesn't matter where you make friends, as long as you mindful about it.

Most of the friends I made online aren't my friends anymore. I regret making online friends. Overall I was left with disappointment and anxiety. I do think, mostly it's my fault since I'd rage and roast sometimes so yh that's why they left ig.

I have friends irl yes, but i only talk to them in person and hang out with them at school and yes i do go to out of school hangouts with them. I do have their contacts and social medias but i don’t go out of my way to talk to them through msgs and we r all fine with that. I also have good online friends that i msg only on servers never in DM’s because that can be uncomfortable sometimes, we join VC’s as well usually up to 3-10 ppl in a call. Then i have 2 REALLY close friends, one i have know since i was 10 and we went to the same school but now that we r in highschool we go to different schools so we don’t see each other often but we msg all the time, along with that i have an online friend that I’ve been friends with for 3 years now and we r really REALLY close. Me and those 2 r all in a group chat together so we all talk to each other so yeah lol. Anyways I’m happy with how I deal with my friendships and stuff, I may not be the most social person in the world but thats fine as long as i have those 2 and pass school I’m happy ^^

its rough tho. i graduated uni during lockdown and a year and a half later we're still in lockdown. most of my friends have moved away and you can't go meet people easily. my irl friends have become online friends because i ONLY talk to them online, and the only new friends ive made since 2020 have been online friends. it's not ideal but where i live covid is still fucking us over

I say they aren't the same. It's super easy to connect online since there is no feedback to what you are saying and it feels good, makes you feel heard but until you are in the same room face to face you can't tell how is the person, how do they treat others in person, how they react to you, hell something even as basic as hygine...... For example just because you like the same game, animé or whatever doesn't mean you will have more stuff in common.

I have some online friends that I see as good friends, we are part of a discord group from a youtuber and the majority of the time everyone gets a long with each other and we have a good laugh. But we all live in various parts of the world so there is little to no chance of meeting up with each other, and anyone can be anyone online so you have to think of that as well, i've never used voice chat though.

I have online friendships that has lasted up to 20 years now and they were easier to maintain as everyone grew up, moved places etc while the IRL friendships just faded after someone moved or started a family so I guess it depends on people and personality and such and how toxic of an environment you met on, and how strong your common interests are.
@theinacircleoftheancientpu492

Perhaps that is to some degree because of the simplicity of online friendship, low investment, low gain. Allows for easy to maintain friendships as long as you both want to stay friends.

@FnnElm hanging out in person isn't the only way to experience fun things together. You can do shit like play video games together or just dick around in a voice chat. I don't really see a huge difference between that and doing something with someone in person.

I only have online friends these days. Even my former IRL friends are now online friends because I’ve moved a couple times (and so have they) and can no longer physically interact with them. Honestly, the only people I ever (willingly) physically interact with these days are my two siblings. I’m perfectly happy with my life though, and I don’t believe there is anything inherently unhealthy about exclusively online friendships. If anything, the internet has actually made people more connected than ever before. I say it’s a good thing. If it weren’t for the internet, I likely wouldn’t still be in contact with my old IRL friends.

This differs from what person to another and how things are going for them in the past and the present really. For me, if it wasn't for online friends i would've gone mad from how bad and depressing life was when i was little up to adulthood. God save the poor souls who have to live with more than just a couple of douchebags and abusive relationships, they'll need more than just friend at that point.

Careful with online friends. Recently been ditched by one (that I considered a VERY close friend) for NO REASON whatsoever. Can be a blow to your mental health if you’re not prepared. If you have established friends irl, it’s less likely that you’ll lose them. This is just my experience though so don’t take my word for it.
