Can the 3000 provide enough power for a Gryphon Diablo 300 integrated amp ?
@BWB31975
@BWB31975 2 жыл бұрын
In my system the Niagara 3000 made a big and not subtle difference. The audio guy came to the house to mount some acoustic panels and brought along a Niagara 3000. I had the integrated amp plugged directly into a dedicated 20 amp circuit and didn't expect much from the AQ unit. I was very surprised at the difference in the openness of the sound and in the bass. I speculate that the improved bass performance effect comes from the ability of the AQ unit briefly to dump more current into the line when the amp demands it. The whole system also seems quieter, as described in the video. The system is composed of equipment from McIntosh, Revel, Rega, and Clearaudio.

I got impatient and purchased a Niagara 3000 instead of holding out for a Niagara 5000. At first I thought I did not hear a difference. After playing through several songs, I can say there is a definite difference. There are subtle sounds that I don't hear when plugged into the wall without the conditioner. Even little things like sounds of fingers moving across guitar strings became more apparent. I will be adding additional amplifiers to my system eventually, and will add a second Niagara 3000 to my setup when I do.

I bought the Niagara 3000 with high power Thunder cable to replace my Nordost QB8 power strip. It's only been 2 days that i'm using them. Overall I am dissapointed so far, mostly by the bass performance, which seams to be more blur and lacking impact. I don't know if the Niagara 3000 or the thunder are causing this, or the fact that the Nordost QB8 and Frey2 cable are not there anymore, I do know that those Nordost make a great imptovement in sound quality when they are there.

The lead engineer from Furman, who designed the current generation Pro, Elite, and Reference Series... left and went to work for AQ (Garth Powell). Seeing that he oversaw not only all Furman products, but also all Panamax products (they are a subsidiary of Furman), I HIGHLY doubt that the lack of an expensive certification should be a cause for concern. I have a Furman Elite 15PFi and the components inside are absolutely cheap compared to the stuff found even in the 3000. I see sour grapes from other Audio reviewers that don't seem to have the same connections. My Furman with power factor correction (And, Yes, I understand exactly what that means at a technical level) did help slightly improve the blackness of background, image width, and image depth from my Dual Benchmark AHB2 amplifiers (used as bridged monoblocks) and LA-4 preamp over my previous conditioner, a Panamax 5100.

@@mikepawntee2425 You're going to enjoy my reply. I'm a retired professional Audio engineer with FOH and Monitor World experience at a major theme park in the USA, major convention center, a few mega churches, a radio station, etc. I've seen Furman's take direct lightning hits that saved entire JBL Vertec large format line arrays and their Crown amp stacks (likely the Yamaha or Midas boards and outboard equipment at FOH/MW as well, depending on how much current decided to try to find earth ground through the snake). We're talking over a million in hung boxes alone for a major array hang with 22 outboard Vertec subs. Saved by a few lowly Furman PL 20 Pro's. For those benefits ALONE, it would seem to be a wise investment. So, you can sit down now. Are you normally this rude to absolute strangers? What makes you think you can condescend in this way? You're obviously going to state that without some such double blind nonsense that I can't even believe my lying ears. How many people have to be liars in order for you to be correct? How many users who have reported the exact same effect have to be idiots for you to support your assertion? It's a big number. Which makes your claims even more dubious. NOTE: Furman and AQ use series Mode protection without MOVs for most of their filtering. It is non sacrificial. But keep making assumptions.

The biggest thing with this type of power conditioner is the power reserves that it has. I have a Furman power conditioner elite15 pf I, and for subwoofers its absolutely mandatory. You can't get this type of power from a passive wall socket, its impossible. I tried playing Midway from just the wall socket, and I couldn't do it, I'd completely lost all bass energy, and punch. You may be able to get it to measure fine with a simple frequency sweep, but when it comes to massive dynamic bursts of bass energy, a wall outlet cannot do what the system calls for. 15 amp, 20 amp, isolated line, it doesn't matter, it cannot pull this type of dynamic power needs. If you're serious about power then a power conditioner like this is mandatory. Even if you're not sold by noise pollution, you will be sold by better bass and more dynamics. AudioQuest Niagara is next for me, I think I'll buy 2 Niagra 1200's.

Can you please quantify what you say are "dynamic power needs"? Honestly curious because muy guess would be that a 40A breaker on a 240V service could supply huge multi hundred amp millisecond spikes when needed.

I have very expensive components, well over $40k worth. Never had a power conditioner make a significant improvement in my system’s sound. Tried: Panamax, PS Audio, Monster, Furman, and Power Company. My use is for protection from voltage spikes and brown outs. Ultimately settled on Furman, since it is used by sound crews that have a lot of the same needs… isolation of ground loop hum, protection of their equipment stacks (That are also not cheap.), and in comparison, much more reasonably priced. Nonetheless, this is an insightful and informative review. Thanks for taking the time to post it, knowing full well their will be copious amounts of ridicule from the punters.

Shane, sorry to join this discussion a year late. I’m not an audiophile but my family enjoys movies. We live in Florida, so in addition to the sunshine, we also have lots of thunderstorms and the occasional hurricane. Typicality, my surge protectors have been sufficient to save my equipment when neighbors were replacing gear. Last summer, during a near miss hurricane, I experienced my first brownout. We had three major power fluctuations within moments, then our TV screen turned brown. The AVR was done, but it could have been much worse. I’ve upgrading to a 13 channel surround system but I need to protect it before spring arrives. I watch your channel often, but I don’t recall if this Niagara gear in still your rack later? If you have switched to something else, what are you using, and why? I don’t require the highest level of performance ($5,000 plus a power cable won’t pass the “happy wife” test) but I do need a solid solution. Thanks in advance for checking this old thread and for your insight!

I have to agree with some of these comments. What spare change si describing (a very quiet background) IS real, but Before you buy an expensive conditioner, get a dedicated home run circuit form the box ! And a decent receptacle (you dont need to spend $100 on an exotic rhodium type thing, but a good hospital grade is perhaps the best money you will ever spend. ANd start with a good Non UPS conditioner (APC H15 for ~$300) that has 1) excellent guaranteed surge protection 2) excellent voltage correction 3) Sequenced turn-on and off ensures that connected equipment is powered-up/down in the proper order and with the right amount of delay between the stages. It allows you to program a delay into the sequence between 0 and 12 seconds. This feature helps to eliminate any "popping" sounds coming from speakers when turning on the system. This delay feature also eliminates transients that can affect connected components, e.g. digital projectors. And lets be honest-anything sold under an exotic $$$ cable company’s name is bound to have the same insane price margins, so caveat emptor re price performance for ANY system. BOTTOM LINE- get a home run 20 amp circuit run($200-300) with a quality hospital grade receptacle ($20) to an APC H15 ($300). And look if you are really worried about noise, why are you even fooling around with most class AB amps ? Get a high quality class D-their noise and distortion by design are an order of magnitude (soemtines SEVERAL orders fo magnitude) quieter !

IT'S ABOUT PERSONAL GROWTH. As you are financially able to afford more expensive things, your taste changes. It does NOT matter if AudioQuest or any other high cable manufacturer claims are true or not. Its that sense of accomplishment when you realize that you can afford to buy a high-end well-made cable, processor, power conditioner, speakers, etc. I can bet most of the people screaming 'SNAKE OIL' this and 'SNAKE OIL' that, will be the ones buying cable risers, ultra-high-end turntables, processors, etc if their financial situation allowed them to.
@brucecarter6205
@brucecarter6205 4 жыл бұрын
Whether or not you can afford it means nothing here. We are discussing whether or not these products can improve sound quality. If they don’t do what they claim, then they become ‘snake oil’. They’re being marketed as sound improvement devices, not audio equipment jewelry. I have some expensive braided Kimber cables in my setup right now. They are there strictly for aesthetics purposes only and sound exactly the same as my generic 12 gauge Monoprice. The fact that I own these does not let Kimber off the hook for marketing BS.
@grossmisconduct7223
@grossmisconduct7223 4 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't necessarily say snake oil. If you have a problem with the quality of power going to your outlets, then sure a power conditioner may help. As to whether you you can hear improved sound quality, that's subjective. But I'd rather look at resolving the issue first by running a dedicated line from the mains panel to the wall outlet and plugging my gear directly to it. This discussion on power conditioners is a good listen: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z8WFppmUq57Ukp8.html

at bare minimum get the AQ 1200 power conditioner. the 3000 and up models filter out more of the higher frequency ranges compared to the 1200 model. if you dont have dedicated lines just for your audio setup than a power conditioner is very important. clean power means all your equipment has a quieter background and 95-100% less noise going to it. Any noise in your power lines the equipment will pick it up and amplify it making it worse. clean power will mean a variety of benefits for your audio and video equipment even your tv will benefit from it. also keep your power cords away from interconnects, speaker cables etc as much as possible. even if the power cords are only a few inches away from another cable its better than touching other cables this will help a tiny bit with noise transmitting to other cables.

There are also power cords that reduce noise. Transparent Audio and Shunyata Research come to mind. I have the Furman units, and have Transparent power cords on most of my gear. With the Transparent PCs I heard increased detail I hadn't heard before in the sound. I might put a noise-reducing power cord on my SPR and call it a day, as the IT-Refrence is chained to it.

Okay some noise was filtered. If the noise analyzer were connected immediately after the first of the noise filtering circuitry in, say, a preamp, would we see the same results? In other words is the extra circuitry in the power conditioner redundant with respect to what's already in your gear? The premise this demo was based on using objective measurements so let's measure again rather than relying on the "increased detail" comments.

The only reason to get this unit is if you want the local surge protection it offers and need the outlets, or you want something cool in your system to point at. Other than that, any increase in perceived sound quality is negligible and or nonexistent at best (refer to ASR for self-education). These devices don’t do anything else to “help” the sound. What these devices do is validate just how strong the placebo effect really is - if you believe a device will improve the sound of your system, it will.

I realized this demo/test shown is flawed. Remember, your equipment power supply filters out noise. You should be testing the noise level coming from your components not noise coming from the wall outlet or the outlets from the conditioner.

This device is used to test the power going to your equipment. Not after it gets there.
@kevonmanuel
@kevonmanuel 4 жыл бұрын
Like I mentioned before, your equipment power supply does noise filtering. The correct test would be to see if it's the conditioner or your equipment power supply doing the cleaning. 1. Test an AVR plugged directly into a wall outlet and see how much noise is coming out of the speakers. 2. Test an AVR plugged directly into the conditioner and see how much noise is coming out of the speakers. If the noise levels are the same then the power supply is doing its job and the conditioner is useless. If there is less "noise" from when using the conditioner, then you can say the conditioner is actually doing something.

@@therealshanelee Forget about beliefs and forget about the snake oil arguments. If you plug your equipment directly into the wall outlets, turn up the volume to Reference levels, choose a source input that does not have anything connected to it. Stick your ear up next to your speakers and listen for "AM Radio" station noise coming through your speakers. If you don't hear any "AM Radio" Station noise coming through your speaker, having all of the equipment plugged directly into your wall sockets, then you honestly say that your equipment is filtering out the noise coming from the AC wall outlets on their own without the help or need for a Conditioner.
