While companies have gotten comfortable dusting off their older, successful IP, and infusing it with color in order to show how progressive they are. But how many of these shows actually succeed at being the series they promise to be?

Note on my use of Latinx: I have seen multiple people discuss that they do not feel seen by the term. I have seen it and heard it being used by people of Latino/a heritage. However, I am aware that language changes so I will do my best to make sure I choose words that feel more organic and natural to language. thank you for the feedback!

i'll forever think that "progressive" reboots for adults will never work (at least in the near future) bc the people in charge of them are mostly doing it for money, and even if they aren't, they'd undoubtedly be pressured by higher ups whose only concern is the profit. that's why they're all filled with empty story arcs and buzzwords. and that's why kids' media works. bc tv shows like she-ra or the babysitters club come about from the desire of people to give to children now the safe space they felt when they were growing up, or creating one they wished they had.

You are totally right. I don't want diverse faces in front of white narratives. It's crazy that there are a lot of older shows more progressive than the shows coming out today. Studios and writers should learn a thing or two from things that have worked in the past. While I liked the idea of black women having leading roles in Gossip Girl, the writing was terrible and the narratives were superficial. And not in the fun and exciting superficial way that the original was. With all the reboots coming out, it's almost as if studios are afraid of original content.

It is because it is, they fear the flop yet it is self-sabotage. They make it so safe, so disposable people can see it and kinda walk away. Also a lot of these I never knew they got rebooted. I only knew about Charmed, the rest I was like "wow they did that?" The cycle: 1) 'Update' a show by race swapping characters. 2) Write terrible scripts and make terrible characters (sometimes by virtue of being 100% perfect and flawless to signal boost the race swap.) 3) Attack the fans as toxic racists when they point out the characters absolutely suck. 4) The creator fails upwards as a 'hero' to ruin more projects.
@BlazingOwnager

I never watched these shows but I will say Invincible suffers this problem rather severely. It race swapped a white red headed girl for a black girl, most of the people watching had no issues with that. However they proceeded to make her rather insufferable and by the end, groaningly insufferable - way worse than her comic counterpart - so people absolutely hate the character and put her on all the bottom lists. Which some people will then say is about making her black and NOT the fact she is a massive idiot and worse than the original character in the actual writing in every possible way. It's been an ongoing problem since Ghostbusters when Sony figured out a race/gender swap is an invincible criticism shield.

I'm mixed and with how many racially ambiguous characters there are on TV right now, so few of them explore the nuances of our experiences because they exist mainly to be marketable and you feel that hollowness when you sit down and watch these shows. That scene in Charmed when Macy is confronted with how awful it can be to feel used as a token due to your proximity to eurocentric beauty standards is powerful on its own, but in the context of a show that only focuses on light skin and white characters, it just made me scratch my head. There's a serious lack of introspection going on in the writing room and I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking practice what you preach when I saw that.

I relinquished all hope for the Charmed reboot when I tried to watch an episode that was airing and instead of having any memorable characterisation (no shade to the actresses, they were doing a phenomenal job with what little they were given) they basically fell into "the gay one, the estranged black one, and the 'normal' one", and the whole plot of the epside was a completely surface deep look at SA with all the nuance and realism of a cartoon hammer to the head. It just seemed like instead of creating a show about three sisters finding their strengths as individuals and as family, including all the aspects of their identities therein, the people behind it just wanted to go "Look! A feminist show! It has women of colour and one of them's even gay! What do you mean you want a plot? Here, in this one they'll join the Me Too movement, that's a plot, right??? Aren't we so amazing for using our platform to speak for these poor marginalised groups? Don't you want to give us lots of money and attention and awards?" Like, no, we would prefer to hear from those groups in an organic, genuine way, not as a marketing tactic headed by a bunch of white execs playing "Rainbow Capitalism Does Race". If you write the characters with awareness of who they are, then their experiences as women women of colour should naturally influence the story you want to tell as you are telling it from their perspective, rather than you picking a topical 'issue' and draping some measure of plot loosely around it. I haven't dared even attempt the new Roswell show. I heard Michael was bisexual, and an old fave being brought back as canon bisexual is like they're trying to directly invite me to advertise to me specificaly, but I have so little faith in anything where the marketing revolves around being a diverse reboot anymore. I have been hurt too many times and I fear that ruining bisexual Michael for me would be one heartbreak too many lol

The issue is that reboots want to make something for the NEW generation, with the SAME writing team and producers. And if they didn't value different voices twenty years ago, and only increasing conversations about diversity pushed them to include representation now, of course their efforts will be shotty, and disingenuous, and halfhearted. And on another note, with Gossip Girl, it is really weird how they dance around race. I'm sure the writers believe that when Black people have wealth, racism disappears. Which is insane considering the fact that a Black person couldn't pay their way into a country club no matter how much money they had. And, if anything, being the single Black girl in a private school exposes you to some pretty bad experiences. At least at a more diverse public school there would be other Black students to confide in.

The biggest problem with most of these “progressive” reboots is that they cast actors who can’t connect with what made the original shows great. The show runners are like “We need actors from THESE demographic communities.”, with no consideration for whether the actors chosen will work together well on screen. Yes, representation is important. But, if every scene involving certain actors together falls flat, how long will that show or movie last? What good is representation that doesn’t have staying power?

Instead of allowing corpos to present what they think these people would want to see. I love Anne with an E but the thing about comparing it with the rest of those shows is it's Canadian and so comes from a different legacy of racial representation. The CBC is government-funded so they are supposed to represent the country and do make a lot of shows representing various cultures, often written by people from the culture. This is great as a place to start, but since it's a crown corp it tends to hold up the preferred Canadian narrative of multiculturalism. This is good in theory, but in practice generally means we are welcome to bring pieces of our heritage but nothing too scary, nothing too challenging, always make it heartwarming. Anne brought in some representation, but you'll notice it's a little toothless, only individuals have prejudices and rarely the main characters and it's all very comfortably in the past. It's a lovely show, but for a Canadian show it's not actually progressive, if you compare it to Road to Avonlea which was 20 years earlier, it isn't all that different. The exception is the residential school story, that was actually risky, a risk you take for a last season.

Having characters of color, queer characters, and different religions groups represented, its not going to go well if you don’t have that in the writers room. Bc all things considered, while representation Is always good. Having bad representation does more harm than good and diversity in the writers room is just as, if not more important than a diverse cast.

I would have to add to that the writers need to be good just not what they're seen to be either. Also there needs to be some solid direction so said writers aren't running over each other and or pushing a narritive away. Which is why I prefer shows with one writer even if they get something wrong I can see that's their perspective I can respect. When there's more than one and the episode(s) suck that's something hard to pin down as to whom is ruining the show.

I'll have to disagree. Reboots, be "progressive" or not, already start with the hindrance of having to live up to the expectation of the original. Yes, they have the brand advantage, but nothing more. Reboots require really good writing, something that might come from any sort of people, including a writing room without diversity. Its harder, depending on the circumstance, but its possible. This whole affaire should make clear that stories need to have their own merit to stand out for themselves without relying on the crutch of inclusivism, because if you do so, it does feel forced and doesnt work. We've seen this. To use a comic example: making Superman and Batman gay would be lazy, dumb and cowardly, specially given the fact that Apollo and Midnighter are basically expies of both that were created as gay married characters and their relationship works really well. Its possible to write said characters, as long as you're not just trying to cash in by "washing" for cheap acceptance.

Netflix is one of the worst culprits for only hiring light skinned actors on supposedly diverse and "groundbreaking" shows 🙄 I never read the babysitters club growing up, but I think the reboot show is next on my list now! Especially the representation of growing up mixed living primarily with your white parent. That hits close to home and isn't something I've seen in a show before. Also, I stopped watching Anne with an e, not on purpose but because I didn't realize the third season came out until it got cancelled and I got sad and didn't want to finish it so I could pretend it wasn't canceled lol. From what I remember of the second season, I really liked how much they addressed colonialism, especially since the main character is obviously a little white girl. Also I really appreciate that they didn't just make Anne a token poc, but rather naturally included Black and Brown characters with their own legitimate story arcs, that were important in their own right. I also really like what you said about the contrast between Anne thinking avonlee is this heavenly place, where in reality it couldn't be for so many people. I had also felt apprehensive about the third season because of the residential school storyline (i have multiple relatives that are residential school survivors, and my nation is one that got funding to finally excavate and bring our children home this past year) and how that would be handled, but I think I will finally watch the third season after watching this video 💗

Edit: I want to note that I have yet to see any "reboot but diverse" anything bring in disabled people. Diversity is more than just race and sexuality. We very rarely see good (as in, well written) representation of disabled people. That's how I know that most of this is nothing more than ticking the boxes. I've refused to watch all other other shows bar Anne with an E. Though I might give Babysitter's a go. The only complaint I have about Anne with an E id that they fall into that same "you can tell i'm progressive because I hate corsets" trap that so many period productions do (see Abby Cox's video on the Problem with I'm not like other girls girls that period productions have. We've mostly moved away from that in modern shows and movies, bit it's all there still in the historical stuff and I'm so damn sick of it). She's lucky shes a member of the IBTC, because a corset was your bra back then, and as a woman with a larger chest, no way would she have been happy to go around with no bust support. Also, a well made and well fitting corset is 100 rimes more comfortable than a bra and I will doe o this hill. Also also, the 90s reboot of a 60s show you missed was The Brady Bunch movies. Gotta admit, I loved them. But not as much as I loved the Addams Family movies. They actually were awesome. Truly awesome.

Exactly. I haven't seen a lot of these "progressive reboots" bring in disabled people either. And when they do sometimes, the disabled character(s) in question would usually be autistic. There's way more to the disabled community than just autistic people and even wheelchair users that exist too. These shows go out of their way to represent characters of different race and sexualities plus "strong women" and fat acceptance, and yet they also sleep on disabled characters and a few other underrepresented groups that experienced marginalization too like albino people and ENM people. Maybe it's because the disabled community and others don't have their own official national months? That would explain why companies and TV shows didn't bother to capitalize and exploit these communities as much for the checkboxes.

That sounds like a bit of a shame... One of the things I like about LM Montgomery is that her stories are full of strong women and relationships between strong women even if they aren't capital-F feminist, and that can be a really interesting niche. I know this wasn't the overall point of the video, but people, please, please _please_ watch Genera+ion on HBOmax. In a sea of reboots, it was an original teen drama that focused on a high school GSA club in LA. With so many of Melina's criticisms on the Gossip Girl reboot in particular I'm just like... damn, the few things worth praising about that mess already exist in a more cohesive and better written show. It has Justice Smith and Nathanya Alexander, i.e. _more_ then one black character. The most beautiful romance is a pair of teen lesbians who are trying to navigate their orientation in regards to what it means for their mental health and their cultural heritage. Nava Mau gets to play a trans latina aunt and despite it being implied that her family has not been accepting of her gender identity (the pain of which we are not subjected to on screen, god freaking bless), she's just casually happy in the background, living her best life, being in a healthy relationship with a sexy man, having her cosmotology career and helping her tiny queer neice deal with tiny queer things. You also have Syndney Mae Diaz, a trans actor who gets to play a goddamn cis person in fiction for once and that is beautiful. Nathan Stewart-Jarrett from Misfits fame is out here being the best adult/teacher in this queer teen drama. Nathan is someone who's bisexual storyline I _deeply_ relate to, and the way he has to deal with bigoted regressive views on "choosing" something from both straight and LGBTQ adults is shit that I have _never_ seen explored with as much time and energy dedicated to it on screen. The intersectionality in this show was 👏 off 👏 the 👏 freaking 👏 charts, which honestly shouldn't be surprising??? One really beautiful thing that happens when you sit down and decide "yeah we're going to write a show about a highschool GSA" is you get to show a bunch of different sides to similar experiences instead of just having one token -insert minority here- character who's expected to pull the weight for an entire group of people. The show got critsized for it's "cringe" Gen-Z social justice humor, mostly by younger millenials who frankly just didn't get it. Like if it's not for you, fine, but the show was co-written with the guy's teenager daughter and I think it shows in the _best_ ways. A lot of the time it feels like a version of Euphoria for babies which I mean as a GOOD thing. If you want a cast FULL of POC actors in queer storylines where the main take away _isn't_ life is pain and you're never going to be happy, this was fucking it. For anyone who might pick it up though, also know that it goes out on a cliffhanger and got cancled to make room for the Degrassi reboot. Genera+ion died for our sins, and my anger boils every single time discussions about "unoriginal/bad woke" reboots come up. EDIT: also just gonna drop this link here and take a moment to shout out a reviewer. She said a lot of stuff better then I could 🙏 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ir5zeceZ29GXj3U.html

I just recently finished watching season 1 of HIMYF and I feel this. the show has a Mexican woman, an asian (Vietnamese?) woman, and an Indian man in the main cast and their ethnicities RARELY inform their characters beyond a couple one-off moments in the beginning. one of them is comedic relief, one is just a cool supporting character, and the 3rd has an important conflict... but it's about maintaining a long-distance relationship. and like. one of the other main characters is a white British guy, and has an episode where he's REALLY excited about watching a soccer game. and... he's the only one. the show makes a POINT of showing that the other characters don't care and he's upset about that, even though soccer's the most popular sport in Mexico and the 3rd most popular sport in India. on a related note: Ellen (the asian/Vietnamese woman) is a lesbian too, and her attempts at cultivating a love life just feel far too removed from my experience as a queer woman. it felt like the writers decided they could write her as a straight guy when it comes to finding romance, instead of figuring out what it's like for us to try and figure out not only if a woman is in fact gay, but also if she's even interested. there's no presumption of gayness for us the way straight people have a presumption of straightness.

@@passiveaggressive6175 IMO it usually is. plenty of sitcoms I've watched had characters who change over time due to events within the episodes. Woo yeah, the reboot of fun fem show to edgy politically aware show is so not it. In general, even though I don't believe in being apolitical, I also don't think the way anyone incorporates politics directly in entertainment right now works at all. I'd say Sex Education does the mini political activism the best but it's because it's actually thread into the story in ways that make sense (i.e. going to an abortion clinic, experiencing sexual assault, being open with your sexuality in a not very accepting world, being in a wheelchair in a non-wheelchair accessible world). I think most other shows are written from the detached perspective of people who don't know what it's like to have social political "debate" topics effect their every day lives like what does giving people like AOC and Bernie Sanders shoutouts have to do with anything actually happening to these characters or us as an audience looking to relate. (And the influencer level BLM protest episode in Gossip Girl 2.0 is already so bad and will only get more embarrassing with time, ahh the show is rotten milk)

Talking about Charmed: I was so excited when I found out about the reboot. Charmed is one of my favorite series growing up because it focused more on the sister's relationships, even though yes, men were prominent part of the show. When I heard the reboot was featuring latinx witches, I was really hoping to get to see non westernized version of magic, like voodoo, bruja, etc. That's part of what made the advertising so interesting. Then the first season seemed to be copying a lot of the same storylines from the first show, and quite honestly, I got bored very quickly. AJLT was one of the biggest let downs, even though I had almost zero expectations that it would be good. It's like the writers, and a lot of them worked on at least the last few seasons of the og show, forgot who these characters were. Miranda...Oh, where to begin. It's like they wanted to make up for how homophobic she was in the og series to make her the sjw of the show while doing the literal least and that storyline only being used to further her relationship with Che. And while I liked Che, I feel like she did put too much on Miranda to expect a very heteronormative woman who's clearly just now expiramenting to know all the relationship pitfalls of dating in the lgbtq world. Che should've had the conversation with her early on about whether or not she and Steve were in an open relationship. Carrie was still Carrie, only caring about Miranda or Charlotte when she was directly involved. I loved Charlotte this season, and she was always one of my least favorite characters. Seema and Nya were my fav of the new comers. I loved that they had honest conversations about regretting having kids, and if Nya would regret not having one or if she was happy being child free. Considering how many child free (which is different than child less) milennials there are in the world, we're woefully underrepresented onsecreen or they use that as a plot device to get the character to "come to terms" that she wants to be a mom or her life wont be fulfilled. And in regards to Miranda's marriage; I would've LOVED to see them explore an open marriage or throuple situation like from Shameless with V and Kev. That relationship was widely accepted after some initial distrust, and seemed to be working. And I absolutely agree Steve would've been open to communication or discussing an open marriage or nontraditional relationship to stay with Miranda, and Miranda herself said she still loved being with him, just not sexually. So why, in the year of 2022, is divorce still the only option? This show is as close minded as it ever was when it comes to non traditional relationships and they STILL can't have honest conversations about lgbtq relationships. It was so frustrating to watch.

I definitely agree with the problems with the gossip girl reboot I feel it truly just wanted to have its case and eat it too, they wanted the cool points with the diversity cast/characters but didn’t want to address the reasons why the diversity cast is there. The thing that a lot of people seems to forget or choose to forget is the original book series and the first 2 seasons of the original TV series had their storylines based on being a commentary on social class hierarchy and discrimination among teenagers and young adults by using Y2K/early 2010s New York City upper class culture/community as the backdrop I feel excluding that social commentary during the final 4 seasons of OG gossip girl and how that lead to the show’s downfall was the perfect way to make the reboot work well, they could’ve taken advantage of the new era of social-political consciousness becoming more talked about in today’s society and the world becoming more divisive to upper class society and celebrity culture and dive right into it but nah they just dropped the ball.

Oh, Legacies… I don’t like the term ‘guilty pleasure’, but I don’t know how else to call a show I enjoy for scratching some of my specific trope needs, while falling into the same bullshit when treating _certain_ characters as its parent shows - despite all the veneer of progressivism it had compared to them. I know it’s not technically a reboot, but it really does exemplify many of the same points with the way it tried to move with the times and whatnot.

could you elaborate on why you dislike the term guilty pleasure?
@mse90
@mse90 2 жыл бұрын
@@toulouse1 I suppose the answer is two-fold (but the heart of it is really going to be the second part, moreover, the one sentence tl;dr 😁). There's a layer to this of how what we call 'guilty pleasure' is often what's considered low brow or 'cringe' media, and that often just means media that's targeted towards certain demographics (see the million thinkpieces that are now being written about all the disproportionate hatred properties like Twilight received at their time). Of course, in this context, I used the term more to denote this specific show's _problematic_ nature, but even then, I'm reminded that most shows that don't even try to diversify their content will never receive the same level of scrutiny from most people enjoying them. That doesn't mean that we should stop criticizing media - far from it! (I am a big fan of this excellent channel that's largely about media discussions after all ☺) These can be pretty good discussions to be had that can be starting points to even more in-depth talks. We should be aware of these things and not just ignore the bad that seems inconvenient. But ultimately: I don't think we should feel guilty about media we enjoy. If it makes you happy, if you connect with something in it, then that's your joy, and you shouldn't feel guilty about that imo. Who cares if it's badly made? Art is subjective anyway. The harmful elements are the more tricky part, and those should be interrogated, but even then, guilt in itself doesn't do much. Nothing is unproblematic, as the old addage goes, but we can always try to be mindful without too much self-flagellation. There can be more to this discussion to be sure (like, is it okay to support media when that helps creators who do demonstrable harm? which I do think goes beyond this topic, but also, other people's mileage may vary on what even constitutes as demonstrable harm, etc.), but this is my main philosophy on why I usually try to avoid the term. Tl;dr: I don't like the term guilty pleasure because I think it's okay to admit if something just brings you joy, just don't be an ignorant asshole as a general rule.

Interesting that you consider Abby as the one who took over new Charmed in season 2, when I thought it was Harry who took over the show. They dive all the way into his backstory, and even made the dark version of him as the main antagonist, they gave him this pseudo love triangle with him, Macy and Abby. Harry felt more like the main character than the Charmed Ones did. Which is my biggest problem with the show. They don’t treat their main characters like their main characters enough. And I could go on and on about how Gossip Girl 2.0 was a mistake, it should’ve never aired the way it was written.

Ahh i just checked your page yesterday to see if i missed a video, I’m so excited for this topic!! As someone who always thought a lot about social justice and popular media I’m so annoyed when I see how terribly progressive topics are handled. I just rather shows not try to take a social justice lens but I know they basically can’t be neutral anymore. It’s just so cringy how awkward and forced it all feels. I just started reading home by Toni Morrison and there’s so much depth, it’s refreshing to consume media about racism that is handled eloquently.

As a teacher, the teachers on the gossip girl reboot made me stop watching. Why are the teachers like that...no one is forcing them to work at a private school. The public schools are hiring, paying more, and unionized.

Here’s the thing, I LIKE my problematic classics. Buffy The Vampire Slayer has almost zero people of color in its main cast. Martin and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air both have misogyny and colorism. Sex and the City can be quite homophobic and transphobic. I enjoy them all the same, because they’re relics and I make fun of them for it. And keeping them the way they are allows for education on how things used to be. Now progressive reboots CAN work, but most of them end up being progressive just for profit. As marketable as progress is, unfortunately good art requires more than progressiveness to be good.

Sometimes I'd rather watch a show that's all white cast than deal with a show like Gossip Girl that has just one majorish poc character but they get treated like shit by the show and fandom, which makes you feel like shit as a poc audience member. I'm glad things are getting better but I don't like it when shows just do diversity just to look good but don't care about authenticity, and don't try any kind of collaboration with the actors from those communities.

Especially because a lot of times, these reboots don't always take into account what makes the OG series so successful in the first place. They think it's just a matter of taking the same premise, and haphazardly setting it in the modern day with a few more splashes of color and buzzwords. Buffy (despite its many issues) is so beloved not because of the premise alone, but because of the specific characters and how revolutionary it was for television at the time -- the genre mixing, the unique dialogue and season-long arcs, the creative ways it effectively played around with the storytelling medium through episodes like Hush, The Body, Once More With Feeling, etc. If I'm going to see a reboot, I want to see something NEW that also shows a genuine appreciation for the original and storytelling as a whole

I definitely am in the belief that have characters be whatever you want. But I don't want that to be the only part of there character. I want round characters not flat and community getting. I'm so tired of having "gay" characters and they just exist to be gay, no I am more than my sexuality and I do more than think about men.

The whole video was very well made and even though I didn't watch those other shows I could just see why these shows bothered you so much, it's the type of shit that I'm too dumb to put into words but when you do it, it's like YES THAT'S IT! Oddly enough, the IDW comic series of a bunch of the 80s Hasbro toy properties have been fairy progressive. Optimus Prime trying to deconstruct a system of extreme 'colonial/classism that lead to the the deception uprising as a pseudo-Russian Revolution that became a space robot Soviet empire while dealing what the questions of wtf sex/gender/body politics means to beings of theoretically have the ability to just change parts was more depth from a 's3LL m04R t0Yz!" comic than I ever expected and a nice refreshing 'FU' to Bay's movies.

I remember watching Charmed and it suffers from what a lot of CW shows have with this insufferably nonself aware loose attempt at addressing social issues or incorporating it into dialogue without it actually seeming human or realistic or even genuine. Also I think its an interesting note that all the shows discussed here seem to have a more female focused demo. But hopefully things keep moving forward not backwards for other future reboots.

Really appreciated this video. I find that even when I'm writing my own stories from my own Maori culture there is a point at which there's a crossing over into what I have come to call "plundering". Where you start picking out bits like its a smorgasbord without really taking the care to understand how the parts fit into the sum. It's a subtle thing and I can appreciate that it would be easy to do when you're writing for someone else's culture. And much more so when the approach is as clueless (if also well meaning) as some of the examples cited here.
