No they are not Necessary. The way you protect natural hair is to keep it moisturized. Learn your hair and what it likes. Use more conditioner which ever one you decide. Deep conditioner, leave in conditioner or regular conditioner. Make sure your hair is moistured in the right way. Doing “protective styles” for too long, you can run the risk of not learning your hair. Even when you think your hair is moisturized it’s actually not as moisturized as it can be. But to you it’s moisturized because that’s all you’ve known.

Exactly I used to struggle so much with my hair, because I only did protective styles since everybody said it grew your hair. My hair was so dry but as soon as I started, actually caring about moisture my hair grew. And it was good I started in the summer.

@@miriamabba3092 Good Morning Sis! I forgot I wrote this a year ago but the same is still true. Yes, I do low manipulation. Where I'm from we say "plaits" (lol), so generally I plait or twist my hair for a week or two at a time and just let it be. It's long enough to pull it into one or wear hanging. For me, my hair likes to be left alone. I get knots easy, so the only time I usually wear my hair "loose" is for church or special events. I'm not a hair guru or a youtbuber but I hope this helps a little. What really worked for me was prayer & faith in trying something different. Be blessed!
@taereecutie97

I completely resonate with this video because I have been wearing protective styles for YEARS! and my hair has not passed a certain length due to breakage and lack of knowledge in caring for my natural hair. Protective styles for me also enabled me to hide my insecurities with my natural hair instead of loving it and embracing it for what it truly is; tight curls , shrinkage , and all. So no more protective styles for me. At least not regularly. It's also extremely important to rehydrate the hair using shampoo and conditioner every 7-10 days. Protective styles do not afford you the opportunity to do that because often disturbing the style with water and shampoo and conditioner can make it very fuzzy and ruins the style.

That is so true! I noticed for some people, it is easy to do protective styles when they’re first learning they’re hair (to avoid heat, relaxer, etc) but if they get too used to them, they skip getting the chance to learn the hair underneath. And I’m gonna do the same this year! Low manipulation is such a charm❤️❤️

I do protective styling all the time, I do braids and don’t add any extensions. I do my normal routine as I would without the style. Shampoo deep condition moisturize the only step that is missing is that detangling session. My hair when it is out is constantly breaking.

Shannel NotChanel yup trim regularly deep condition and wash religiously. But my hair doesn’t do well I’m wash and goes and twist outs and all that detangling every week. I’ve grown to bra strap length with just protective styling all healthy ends and everything. I tried to leave my hair unbraided for a month and my hair was extremely dry brittle and overall just a hit mess hair breaking off left and right. My daughters hair behave the same way. Our hair just likes to be left alone and be washed and condition as is.

I don't think protective styles are essential, moisture is an essential. Without it, your hair will not retain any length, low manipulation styles are better than protective styles. Since you're not completely leaving your hair alone for a long period of time. I usually do braid outs.

I typically protective style during the colder months in Chicago. The cold and the dry indoor air is brutal. Last year I wore a lot of wigs and washed and deep conditioned my hair every 2 weeks instead of every week when I wear my hair out. This winter I didn't want to cover my hair with wigs as much so I've been wearing buns with Marley hair and two strand twists with no hair added. I'm also washing my hair every 2 weeks. I can stretch my wash days when I don't wear my hair out. I retained length last year and this winter I'm retaining length as well. I like giving myself a rest from washing my hair every week. Everything seems to take so much more effort in the winter, so it's nice to have a bit of a break.

Great video! 🥰 Tbh, I am a strong believer in protective styles because I’ve gone from collar bone length to armpit length in the matter of 6 months because of straight protective styling with single braids for those 6 months. This is only because I kept my hair moisturized while in the protective style and took it out GENTLY every time it was due for a refreshed protective style. I also made sure that they didn’t install the single braids too tightly into my hair (which allowed me to avoid tension damage). I also made sure to keep up with weekly scalp massages into my exposed roots while my protective style was in, all while not manipulating my real hair since it was intertwined into the single braids. So yes, I did achieve amazing growth with protective styles but! One thing I will mention (and the reason I stopped doing single braids) is that the people who installed my pro styles for me, did NOT know how to manage natural hair in a gentle manner. So because of this, I did lose just half of two of my individual curls at the front of my head, as a result they are shorter than the rest of my front bangs. This was caused by the stylists combing my hair too harshly at the front. Ever since then I have not returned to them, but am trying to do pro styles with my own natural hair - aka with two strand twists, my only problem is they get fuzzy really quick and thus, are hard to maintain for more than a week. Hence, the longest I wear my two strand twists end up being for just a week. Which is disappointing but I deal with it. I also try and keep up with daily scalp massages with castor oil to get my hair growth going.

Wash, deep conditioning, hot oil, 20 to 30 twist.(eggs, avacado oil etc protein treatment every 3 months) tuck and leave it alone for 2 to 3 weeks. 3rd or 4th week bus out that bomb twist out. Week later let's do it again. Lol I used to protective style with sew ins year 2 and 3. Senegalese twist. First paid protective style in ages. Still spraying aloe Vera juice. A little bit. Lol. I agree with a lot of what you say. My hair thrives when interacting with water so I have to find ways to seal moisture in without sealing more moisture from coming in naturally. I found a solution so far. I can’t be afraid of humidity and shrinkage because it makes my hair happy lol. I have tried protective styling and my hair did grow to longer lengths but it wasn’t as healthy as it could be and it was thin. So now I just focus on hair health over length. I just big chopped again now that I have all this newfound knowledge on my hair.

Rice water doesn’t grow your hair it maintains the length you already grew. Hair is made up of a protein called keratin. And rice water has protein enzymes that are like building blocks. So by adding rice water to your hair you’re filing in the gaps of your hair shaft making your hair stronger and prevents it from breaking. Hair grows from the inside out. If your hair responds well to the rice water then I recommended checking your diet maybe you’re not getting enough protein and iron in your diet. Whatever we do our hair like deep conditioning and all that is keep the length that we have grown. Take a multivitamin, eat a healthy diet and your hair will flourish.

My hair shrinks up after a day or two, so I’ll try stretching my hair with larger twists during the week at night and adding oil to my moisture routine 🤷🏾‍♀️ (I usually “steam” my hair in the shower and just fluff it out with Shea butter or aloe Vera gel) I’m very frustrated but I guess I need to focus on learning my hair. are ponytails and buns bad for hair growth? I don’t like wearing wigs in the summer

Wearing them too often can cause breakage at where the hair tie sits so if done too often you may notice accumulated breakage/short pieces in that spot. Wearing them once or here and there should be okay though.

Is it necessary to twist the hair at night before bed? Or can I just sleep without twisting it?
@TyJalayahRobertson
@TyJalayahRobertson 4 жыл бұрын
I would say it depends on you. I never twist my hair before sleeping (I think it’s too much manipulation on the hair) but I’m sure some who do may believe that it’s necessary for their hair (maybe their hair becomes overly tangled and will lead to breakage). So I want to say no, and I’d say avoid having to do this if you can, but also, you know your hair best so do what you feel would be most beneficial for it (whether that’s twisting or not twisting)

I recommend this product to anyone experiencing hair loss or if you have thin dull hair. #ARGANLife shampoo WORKS! Thank you so much for this product and for giving me hope again that my hair can be beautiful again! I can't say enough about this product. It's my shampoo for life! Oh also, I love that you don't need a conditioner with it either and it's all natural, no harsh chemicals like other hair growth shampoos.

I two strand twist my hair. No added hair, not tight, no wigs, or flat ironing. I have only blown out my hair twice in two years since I have been natural. I try not to do too much to my hair.

YOURE RIGHT. I will go as far as saying protective style is not for everyone, based on my hair. I grew up on strict regime of protective styles. My hair is a unique sort of 4C which is a medium porosity, fine, low-medium density that people used to mistake it for 4a, its 4c, it just not the usual 4c. With protective styles my hair never grew past chin length even after years, and thats with oiling scalp/braids + washing braids. However since 2020 i stopped protective styling altogether, and wash my hair once per week + deep condition at that time, I use some wax (vaseline like red dax wax) every other day when it seems dry. It has grown more in 8 months than it has in 3 years with protective styling. I have concluded that my hair is not made for protective styles, its naturally very fragile/fine , and both absorbs and loses water very quickly so protective style are exactly what it DOESN'T need, they're tight and drying. This hair loves moisture and even when I am washing only once per week, it absorbs moisture from the environment and just seems happy. It doesn't take well to twists or braid outs, they dont look good due to thinness so i am always rocking it free in an afro. Styling it is hard and i sometimes dont look as put together, but finally i understand what it needs and am respecting it, rather than impressing the world. What is shocking is that it needs all the things that I grew up being told NOT to do. Wear it free 24 hours, sleep with no bonnet/wrap, no styles, deep condition + wash once per week only, water + wax only at any other times.

Buns are definitely my go to💕 I get a little tight on my edges though so I try to limit them lol but they’re all I used to wear when I started my journey, they’re low manipulation also!

Hey, I know this comment is old but it could help to cover your hair at night, try to use your fingers more often to detangle stay on top of moisture and deep conditioning and get a trim after a couple months I don't believe in trims after every 8 to 12 weeks because your just cutting your growth off

Straight hair breaks less because it *rarely* gets tangled. Kinky/cool hair is the most fragile hair type because of it’s structure. We don’t necessarily have too but because of styling purposes we usually do
@PrincessYonna1
@PrincessYonna1 3 жыл бұрын
Their hair is straight so it doesn’t coil and knot up . I think our hair is more fragile which is why we cant comb and brush our hair without taking the time to deranged and that’s why when it’s stretched u loose less hair it’s easy to detangle and barely knots up so less hair loss Their hair is naturally stretched

I’m from Chicago and I just did a protective style for almost four months and I do think my hair grew but I feel like I lost more hair than I wanted too but I’m sure that’s to be expected since my hair was away for so long. Now that my hair is back out (as of two days ago), I have no idea what to do with it lol. I agree with one of the other comments, that it did make me lazy with my hair

Yup! that’s completely normal! ☺️ like you said, the hair has been put away for a while, so the shed hairs are just now being able to come out. I just took out a TON of shed hairs this weekend after taking my crochet down lol surprised there’s still hair left 😂 but you’re on the right track! No worries about the lost hair❤️❤️

Ty'Jalayah Robertson thank you love! Quick question, is it normal that my hair isn’t really cooperating since I took my twists out. 😩 like I’ve tried washing and applying products for a wash and go but my hair just seems so stiff
@TyJalayahRobertson
@TyJalayahRobertson 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is possible! When we take the hair out, the hair is usually more dry than normal so running it under water or shampooing could make it feel more dry/straw like and hard to wash. I like to prepoo before washing, it prepares the hair for the washing process so that the hair doesn’t dry out completely while trying to wash.

Ty'Jalayah Robertson I use all the mane choice products and when I first took my Locs out, I their new overnight mask to try and loosen it up. Seemed to work but then I washed and conditioned but I couldn’t get al my naps out so I didn’t deep. I ended up using they exotic gel as like a wash and go but my hair felt so hard after it dried. It could just be that my hair needs some extra real tlc
