There is a really specific memory I have from an old video of Charlie's. My friend showed me his channel around 8 years ago, when all he did was voice over playing video games, with the first video he showed me being an Operation Room simulator game. He was very against showing his face, saying his name, or having his viewers know anything about him personally, he was simply kritical/penguinz0. Then one day he posted a video, still voicing over a game, however talking about his real life and how sad he had been lately, from having lost both his girlfriend and gotten fired from his job, he was not in a good place. However, he said what he felt most ashamed about was since he lost his job, he needed to start using the money his channel was making to make ends meet instead of donating it the way he normally did, and he was just totally stuck on this fact, and that he hoped to get back on his feet and be able to make up the money he meant to donate. Thats when I realized how good of a person he truly was

I remember this too! The fact he was donating his youtube earnings for so long, what a beautiful soul he has. And the way he spoke about how he would have to use the money; as though he was asking *our permission* to use his own money, and apologising for it. I truly believe he has the biggest heart of all content creators, and I truly wish nothing but happiness and success for the rest of his life. Finding out Charlie is only a couple years older than me was a shock, I remember seeing that QWOP vid when I was, what, 16? I remember showing the girls in my class and we were all guessing he was about late 30s, 40s, because of his voice. And he was just a lil 16 year older, like us! Aging while watching him has been a trip, I stopped watching for 3/4 years before 2016 and a little after but man, his content is as good as it's ever been right now.

I like cr1tikal, but he's either intentionally misrepresented or didn't understand most of DarkViper's arguments against reaction content here. Reaction content can be beneficial to some original creators, but in the grand scheme of things, it always takes impressions - and thus views - away from most other original content creators. Even if one person gets a boost from a reaction video, there are still a lot of other creators who would've gotten some impressions if the reactor didn't post their reaction video. I think people should read DarkViper's document or at least watch his response before coming to conclusions.

I'm not against reaction content as a whole, but I am against lazy reaction content. If a streamer or creator or whoever sits down in front of their webcam and silently watches someone else's work while eating their lunch, that is adding nothing. It is not transformative in any way, it's just stealing and once the viewers of that "reaction" have seen the video, they have no reason to go to the original cause they've already watched it through. But if someone is constantly stopping the video to discuss what was said, offering critique and opinion (on a regular basis not just once or twice) then they're adding something different and potentially worthwhile. And since the video is constantly being interrupted, there's a greater chance some viewers will want to go and see it themselves. Though I still would prefer if reactors didn't watch ENTIRE videos on stream. Maybe cut to a fullscreen facecam at points during it so the viewers have reason to go see what they were missing. At the end of the day, reaction content isn't going anywhere, but to me there is a right and wrong way to do it and so many huge personalities tend to do it the wrong way.

Old media has this figured out long ago. If you want to provide `curated` content, you're going to have to pay the original creator. Paying with 'exposure' is possible but only when the original creator agreed to that. The rapist argument, while absurd and in bad taste, sheds light on this, the reactor is not asking if the original creator wants to be paid in exposure. They just re-stream the video... In software development, consent is given through a license attached to the code/content. In music, there's a license required to stream/play music you did not create yourself. On youtube, there's a gap where a license would provide clarity. And it seems that they're still a long way of fixing that. I hope, in a couple of years, there's a youtube.com, where you can watch videos for yourself, and and reacttube.com where all content fit for re-streams is available.

How many channels that would be interesting to you could have taken that spot on your homepage, or that slot in your recommended? I’ll search for his name (and no it isn’t blasphemous). JINX. Jinx was a prime example of the worst reactors
@downtownhbrown49652 жыл бұрын
Personally, this has been a complex issue I have been wrestling with for several months now. On one hand, as a viewer, I can't deny that I enjoy the content and I have seen several instances where people love/use the exposure and views off of react content to springboard their channel and to get your content in front of so many eyes is without a doubt an invaluable asset. However, there is something pretty fundamentally true about the fact that react content, although fun and enjoyable, is downright lazy and unfortunately has become a standard for so many of these KZfaq and Twitch streamers and content creators. At the end of the day, I like Charlie's reactions, but I very rarely feel he does enough to really call it a creative and transformative amount but tbh, I'm not upset about it, the content is perfectly enjoyable and I don't want it to change but it's pretty fair to say it leechs off the original content although I feel that term may be harsh. Additionally, when looking up some stuff on twitter, it is fair that none of Charlie's react videos actually credit the original videos, maybe if you're hanging in twitch chat and he's sitting on the channel's page for a while it's easy to pick it up for yourself but he's really not even doing the courtesy of giving links in his KZfaq videos. Maybe this is an oversimplistic solution, but would it not be possible to have the original creator of said content be paid a percent of the money made off the video? I don't know what the cut delineation would be precisely but would that not feel fair especially when so many of these content creators are making so much money that it's not like there isn't enough to go between the two parties.

i agree. you can’t deny the analogy was right. although i did think it was a bit extreme i understood the point he was trying to make and that’s the point of analogy’s. they aren’t trying to make their own point, dark wasn’t comparing reactors to sex offenders. the analogy is only there to help people understand his original point. i’m sure charlie knows this and chose to take it the wrong way considering it’s the first thing he mentions about the document not even a minute into the video.

Same. I don't really care about the drama here, I just wanted a something to hear while I cooked dinner, but honestly, even if there are a lot of lazy react channels with poor content, you can simply either not watch it or just look for the original if you care so much.

@trulslaastad152 жыл бұрын
You guys aren't addressing any of DarkVipers arguments as to why "react content" is harmful. It's not that it's bad content. It's not that it's lazy. A reaction video is in direct competition for impressions (videos shown to people) with the videos they react to. Infact, with all videos on KZfaq. All the people who work countless of hours to make proper videos themselves, "suffers" because some dude watches some of their videos and uploads it. And that dude has the best content, because he can "produce" videos that takes maybe 200+ hours to make, a few times a day. He's able to do that because somebody else already put in those hours. It has nothing to do with whether or not YOU would be watching that video by finding it by yourself. It's not as simple as "just don't watch it". They are still taking up a space on the platform that they have no right to take. No matter who is watching them. They have no right to take it, because the work is not done by them. The time it takes to make a "reaction video", is the same as the runtime of that "reaction video". The effort i close to zero. Everyone else that makes videos "suffers" because of react content. The one being reacted to just has the benefit of maybe gaining some viewers from the reaction. I take 20$ from each of you guys, and give that 60$ to somebody else. That's the idea. But it's more fitting to use food for this analogy. I take your sandwiches and eat them myself, letting some of the crumbs fall down to somebody else. The sandwiches are impressions. You guys, discovering new content through "reacts", are the crumbs. (Nothing of what I've said has anything to do with revenue made, nor with the reaction videos acting as substitutes for the original. But those are also issues.)

Problem is, this may have worked well for you, but most likely not for the content creators. These streamers rake in several thousands of viewers on steam, and then several hundreds of thousands- sometimes millions, on uploading the clip to KZfaq. They've effectively given all these people zero reason to go watch that video again. Unless the original creator's content is ridiculously good, and the creator is exceptionally lucky- they won't achieve even a fraction of the revenue from it. As far as the 'exposure' argument goes, it's just nonsensical riff-raff. First of all, everyone and their mother knows these guys don't sit on their ass 10 hours a day in front of their system in the noble pursuit of providing other people a platform for 'exposure', nor is it out of a deep passion and love for video-watching and internet browsing. The truth is that if tomorrow all react streamers disappeared, then all these up-and-coming KZfaq channels- the ones which reactors claim they help, would not grow any slower. However, the channels that actually routinely have their content leeched by reactors, would definitely be far better off. It's exactly like piracy laws everywhere. Do you think Steven Spielberg would be happy if people started playing his movies for everyone to see, so that he gets 'exposure' and people might be enticed into checking out his other work? Hell no. Even so, i wouldn't complain about discovering a filmmaker as amazing as him- be it from jack mcrandomguy's stream. These things work for the reactor, viewer every time, but the chance it helps the creator themself is so ridiculously low, it's not even worth considering.

My initial reaction to seeing Matt being flamed by Charlie was 'oh no has Matt let the frustration of speedrunning get to him?'... however this topic has been worked on tirelessly and passionately by Matt, and Charlie is 100% in the wrong for putting out his video just because the script mentioned his name and probably triggered a response. What this has done is swayed a majority of people away from Matt's content and killed the discussion of this topic before it was even brought to light. However I do believe Charlie is a good person who has unknowingly done this and would benefit from actually understanding the argument being made. This could be done by both of them sitting down and having a conversation be it offline or online. Also, please ignore the unnecessary personal attacks made by both parties and focus on the argument.

Yeah I get your viewpoint, but it likely is lost views if they do the reaction like some streamers do; just sitting there and watching the whole video unedited,which equals to lost money and a bad taste for the creator while the reactor runs off with a thousand bucks in their wallet. Why watch original content when you can watch the video with someone else reacting to videos? Why go out of your way to find the original piece of content after you've watched a reaction video of that same video with someone else's commentary. If someone makes video X, that took 1000 hours to make, it's full of knowledge, research, nice editing, background footage, the whole shabang, and a reactor comes around and watches video X, uses only 10 minutes of effort to nick your video and put it on the screen and just talk about it every now and again, video X's creator doesn't make any money or views from it, at the very best like 300 inactive subs and 3 new viewers that stick around, while the reactor gets $2000 from video X's creator's 1000h of labor. With game reviews and gameplay, you can't get the whole experience of the game from a video, there's always some aspect in the controls that make it worth it to buy the game, videos don't have this luxury, if you watch a video, that's it, you know the video now, sure you can come back and watch it again since it was good, but you're not likely to go off a reactor's channel to a whole different channel to seek a single video out.
