Some people only hear about Reindeer as in Santa's flying reindeer, so it makes sense they'd be confused

The reindeer was the only reason I believed in Santa at first, because they were real. Like I saw pictures of them and they couldn't fly but my family just excused it because only reindeers domesticated by Santa know how to fly.

My friend saw a pic of a reindeer and asked me if they were actually real cause she always thought they were just made up like unicorns I was shocked when I realized that some people think they are not real 😂

Yeah, we call them reindeer, too. I don't know which America you're in, but in Massachusetts and Maryland, they are reindeer. They also (the males) drop their antlers in winter. Edit: Did not mean to sound so snarky. I really meant that most Americans don't know about caribou in the first place. That might not sound better... 👀

I used to live in Maryland, we have lived in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina ( which is where I lived most my life and was born), and now Tennessee and we have always called them reindeer

It's actually dependent upon if they are domesticated or if they are wild. So Caribou are often referred to Caribou when they are in The wild. Caribou are called reindeer when they are domesticated or on farms.

In the United States, most of us call them Reindeer; however, in Canada (which is technically North America) they are commonly called Caribou.

I've always loved caribou, and seeing domesticated reindeer always warms me up. I've only met a reindeer once, though it's probably because you don't see many in the US!

Fun fact! Both male and female have antlers! Male drop them in the winter and therefore Santa's reindeer are all female if they have antlers in the winter!

hi here I live in Canada and we call them Caribou and reindeer but normal deer most of us with gardens that live in cottage country will call them the pesky bugers that keep eating my plant

I live in ireland and there is a park where you can go to see wild reindeer and around christmas they have a big festival in the park and you can go whenever you like and feed them. They are super friendly🤗

When I was a kid my mom told me santa wasn't real but the reindeer were. So I still imagined wild flying reindeer in the sky every Christmas. Imagine my disappointment when I found out they actually couldn't fly. Lol

A crazy number of people think bats and reindeer are fictional because fictional stories are told about them. You can tell any stories you want that doesn't make the original animal fake.

Fun fact: rudolph's red nose is actually a rare condition where a reindeer has a thin enclosed layer of a light-producing organ between the dermis and the epidermis.

Really?? ..I'm curious, where in North America are you from? I'm from the Northeast in America and both are common! We have Reindeer farms you can visit and feed them but typically, if they're in the wild, they're called Caribou.. There's even a town in Maine called Caribou!

I lived in the arctic for 30 years We watched herds migrate. Sometimes they separate from the main herd and come into town.

When I was growing up, my neighbors had reindeer. They were very friendly. They had one named Rudolph, but unfortunately he didn't have a red nose. 😉

The most magical place to see them is North Pole Alaska. Though they have them caged as if they are tigers. I have been to petting zoos where they have a reindeer. She was begging for everyone to pet and talk to her. The worker said she does the same thing at her home.

I once felt reindeer fur at a renaissance fair not the reindeer but the hair it wasn’t killed for that tho so don’t worry I did see some fox body’s and stuff tho 😓

It's worrying that people don't know basic things that I learned in school in the 60s and 70s like in the 5th and 6th grade. Public school is in the toilet. But thanks for pointing the reindeer/ caribou thing out because it will teach people that don't know.

I didn't know they were different terms (reindeer = domesticated, caribou = wild).. to me this is the least crazy 'is that a real animal??'. I knew someone who wouldn't believe me when I said narwhals were real for a hot minute.

I learned that reindeer were a real animal when I was a teenager and my dad took a trip to Canada and brought me home some pictures of them. Such an amazing animal! But I didn’t know that about the reason some are called Reindeer and others Caribou! That’s so interesting! I always just assumed they were actually called caribou, and that the term “reindeer” was just dawned upon them as the fliers of Santa’s sleigh and all that…but I didn’t know that domesticated caribou are actually called “reindeer”. What a fascinating little tidbit of information! Thank you for sharing! ❤

I’m American and honestly we call them both. If my family and I are watching Christmas movies we call them reindeer but if it’s like we’re going to an event and they have reindeer we call them caribou. Idk if anyone else does this tho. It might just be because I grew up in a hunting family
