Are Small Conventions Better than Big Ones?

I had the opportunity to head up to Oshkosh, Wisconsin to go take part in TMX, Tabletop Minions Expo, put on by Uncle Atom from ‪@tabletopminions‬. It's a small gaming convention with painting classes and tables for demo games and pick up games. The whole aim of the convention is to gather a bunch of nerds to revel in the hobby and enjoy what we love to do. This experiment got me thinking about the beauty of small conventions and what they bring to the table that the larger conventions might not.

Local conventions are in my wheelhouse. The small conventions help build community in ways that any large convention from Adepticon to GenCon just can't.

That looks like an outstanding hangout! Glad you had fun :-) I've been enjoying a few smaller conventions here in the northeast this year. Oh, and that cargo ship board was awesome, it makes me wanna play xcom...

I've never felt a huge urge to go to big cons, but I'd love to do TMX really for the reasons you mentioned. Can't justify a plane ticket from the other side of the planet for that though. Maybe one day. So great to see everyone getting so much positivity out of these small cons.

Next year, TMX I plan to be there. No friend's retirement party or my birthday will be a conflict. Looking forward to it, though who knows what I will be playing after next Adepticon. :) Hope to share a gaming table with you there.

It was great getting to hang out with you and have a chance to get to know you better Phil! Hope you can make it out next year! As far as other smaller cons, another one that has been steadily growing is Dragon Fall, which takes place in Lake Geneva WI in the fall. I've gone the last couple years and had a good time.

Definitely do so! It's a way different experience than something like AdeptiCon, but so much fun! 😀

Definitely yes for smaller cons. ... Granted, even our biggest ones are a whole hog of tinier piglets in a trenchcoat... But regardless, the smaller events are indeed more easier to get into. Cheaper, many a times closer and don't usually have lines to things. Also the seeing more obscure things indeed. Granted, part of it coming from how the "main thing" you go for in a con is smaller in smaller cons, but you still have the same amount of time, so you check your main thing pretty quick and then have time to explore. XD But absolutely recommending smaller things. Even the big ones usually start small, you know? ;)

I appriciate what you are saying about how cool small cons are BUT. BUT. As someone on the other side of the world, the fact you have a "small" con with classes from two of the very best painters in the world (Vince and Sam) and organised by one of the most well known faces of the hobby propels it into a fairly "huge" event.
