Personally, I started collecting the Blu-rays as I've not delved too deep into the classic series. So, for the most part, these collections are my first experiences with the stories. Although I mainly find myself just staring at Lee Binding's incredible artwork more than the stories haha I'm not the biggest fan of the limited edition nature of the releases ATM. Each time they're announced, I won't stop stressing til I've ordered them cause I'm worried about losing out like with the first edition of Season 12. Plus I think these box sets had such potential for new fans to get more into the classic series - such as myself - but even getting one is so difficult that I think it's off putting for people. Though I can't fault the effort put into every aspect of the releases. The special features, the optional effects/sound, the artwork, the restoration. The amount of love put in is so prevalent, and I love them.

I really think they’d be a lot of demand for a decent B5 Blueray release. The good thing with B5 is it was shot on 35 mm film, so the live action scenes would look great. I understand that it’s the CGI effects that are the problem. Best of luck with your project, it sounds great!

Having spent thousands of UK £'s on Who merchandise over the years, I'm being selective with the Blu-ray Collection range, although the animations are an absolute must! Really enjoyed Faceless Ones, and looking forward to Fury from the Deep! Roll on, Evil of the Daleks, Masterplan, Wheel in Space, Marco Polo, and Abominable Snowmen!

THANK YOU for doing a side by side comparison of the picture quality! With the 80s stuff, in particular, I've had moments where I've been watching it and gone "is this really any different from the DVD?" so it's good to finally see there's some improvement on the videotape quality. When these blu-rays were first announced I had zero interest because I thought how much better can they get than the DVDs? It was a combination of the beautiful packaging and the fact that The Tom Baker Years was on the Season 12 set that made me bite the bullet. Obviously now I'm in it for the long haul, but as nice as the new features are some sets do feel like less of a necessity than others. Season 26 didn't feel like there was that much extra stuff they could add, and while I commend them for adding VHS edits of Fenric and Battlefield, I can't say it's something I'm that fussed about rewatching!

Great video, Josh. I just wanted to make a few points, if I may, and I apologize for the length of the comment: Firstly, yes the SD footage is upscaled, but this is not simply a case of zooming in the SD footage to fill an HD frame. The H264 codec used for Blu-ray video allows less compression artefacts and a truer presentation of the quality of the source material, with less video noise and better inter-frame interpolation. Also, from my limited knowledge, the wider color gamut available on Blu-ray allows the colors of the original 2" (and later 1") videotape material to be represented more authentically through better chroma sampling than they could be on DVD (which uses MPEG-2 compression and 4:2:0 chroma sampling). As you say, where any original location film survives for a story it has been restored in true HD; a practice which was also employed for some of the DVD releases. Spearhead from Space is the only true high-definition Doctor Who story on Blu-ray, as I am sure you know, as it was shot entirely on film. Regarding which stories receive 5.1 mixes, I think that the availability of clean elements (studio sound, ADR, sound effects and music) is only one part of it. It definitely helps, especially with regards to some of the 1980s stories that still have clean, isolated music in the BBC archives and clean studio sound/dialogue from the so-called "'71 edits" made at the time (e.g. Remembrance of the Daleks, Ghost Light to name but two). But I also think that the nature and/or popularity of a story has a bearing on which stories receive the 5.1 treatment too. For example, Dalek stories are always popular, so "Planet" and "Genesis" have surround sound mixes. What's remarkable about these stories is that none of the separate dialogue and music stems exist (apart from the Radiophonic Workshop sound effects, which exist for every story), so the only surviving mixes for these stories are the monaural transmission mixes. The fact that Mark Ayres has not only been able to "stereoize" them but also create six-channel surround sound mixes from a single-channel mono mix is something to be marveled at. (Note also that all of the DVDs have lossy Dolby Digital tracks; the Blu-ray episodes all have lossless DTS-HD Master Audio tracks that is bit-for-bit identical to the master mixes, be it the transmission- or the new surround sound mixes. In that respect, the Blu-ray audio beats the DVD releases hands down.) The optional CGI is a welcome addition and it doesn't bother me that it is not available on every story. I can only speak for myself but as a purist, I generally enjoy watching stories with their original sound mixes (be it mono or stereo) and their original effects. Having the option to turn on CGI effects and/or a surround sound mix is nice when the mood takes me, but that isn't always the case. Kudos to the BBC for porting over all of the DVD special features as well as giving us a host of amazing new ones. I'll say this, though - the "Jim'll Fix It" extra from The Two Doctors DVD won't be made available on the Blu-ray range at all. Whatever the late personality may or may not have done in his private life, any fans who may enjoy a sense of nostalgia that this small extra inspires will likely want to hang onto their Two Doctors DVD. Note also the brief shot of Rolf Harris in the "Evolution of the Invasion" documentary on The Invasion DVD, which is also likely to be an issue when the story comes up for a Blu-ray release. I agree with you in disliking the use of participants in the "Behind the Sofa" segments who were not involved in the stories being watched. I've nothing against these outside parties, but these segments -- in my view -- would be better if they solely featured the original members of the story's cast and crew. If that means the segments are shorter, then so be it. In terms of price and availability, I'm not 100% convinced that these sets are limited editions (a la the first Key to Time DVD set released in the UK, which was numbered). I think the initial printing runs are limited, hence some of them quickly selling out, but they eventually come back in stock after being reprinted. Three times I went to order some of the US box sets but they were unavailable on the day of their release, if not shortly afterwards. They eventually came back in stock, though. From experience, the US sets seem to be more readily available than their UK counterparts (although they are released later in the US). It should also be noted that a few of the Blu-ray sets in all regions have had pressing errors in their original runs (missing DVD-ROM extras, CGI problems, frame rate issues, misspelled credits on episodes, etc.) that have necessitated the repressing of problematic discs. However, fans are able to contact the BBC to get replacement discs, which are mailed at no cost to the consumer provided you are able to show proof of purchase. I speak from experience on this. One could argue that -- despite the flaws you mention -- the designs of the UK box sets are better than the US sets, not least because the UK sets have extensive new artwork on foldout panels and booklets but the US sets reset the season numbers for each Doctor. For example, Tom Baker's first season is marketed as the "Tom Baker Season One" set in the States, whereas it's (rightly) referred to as Season 12 in the UK, taking the "classic series" into account as a whole. A small, but annoying, difference. Conversely, some of the US sets come with slipcases and/or inserts outlining the disc contents whilst others do not. This, too, results in a lack of conformity on a fan's shelf but at least one can discard the slipcases if one wants to and simply keep the main sets with their outer plastic cases. Should fans buy the Blu-ray range? I strongly think so. Sure, you spent a load of money over the years getting them on Betamax, VHS, LaserDisc (if you were minted) and DVD but you can sell these and make a little bit of money to put towards getting them on Blu-ray. The Blu-rays offer the show in the best available quality to date, have a huge amount of special features, and the funds go towards maintaining the preservation of Doctor Who on home video. I highly doubt that 4K releases or 8K releases will be forthcoming any time in the next few years, but if or when they do the BBC will really have to push the boat out to get fans to buy them again. We'd be talking Dolby Atmos or DTS:X audio and perhaps AI-enhanced video transfers that further upscale and improve upon the HD versions. On that note, it will be interesting to see how the BBC tackles Blu-ray releases of the 1960s stories. Setting aside stories that are missing or incomplete, copies of 1960s stories were retained on 16mm film, which were captured from the videotape masters before they were wiped. Will scanning these 16mm films in HD (or 2K or higher) yield even better results than the DVD release? I presume so, especially given the rapid progress of technology and the increased video- and audio quality that the Blu-ray format allows. One can dream, but wouldn't it be amazing to have, say, The Dalek Invasion of Earth or Tomb of the Cybermen in HD with an optional 5.1 track? Anyway, great job on the video and thank you for your time.

The North American releases for every season of The Collection are actually still in print and are pretty affordable ranging between $30-$50 Canadian (though only after a few months of already being released). The only downside is we get them in standard bluray cases (that vary in size and some have slipcovers while others don't). Plus we gotta wait 3-4 months after it comes out everywhere else.

I got screwed by amazon on season 12. Preordered the new release back in February and had it set to be delivered to my parents as I'm normally out at work so wouldn't be in to receive it. Contacted them recently to arrange for the parcel to now be delivered to my home as I'm working from home and my parents are self isolating so I didn't want it going there. They changed the address and somehow that reset my order and now it just says they'll email me when back in stock! I called them to ask what was going on and essentially their response was "tough luck".

One point that you didn’t address, maybe you don’t even know about, is that many of the DVDs have been discontinued and are hard to find in North America. Individual stories are up to $80-100 CAD from resellers. These blu ray box sets can be cheaper than one of the stories inside on DVD!

Dan Collins one of the reasons why I picked up season 19. Earthshock has been out of print for many years and goes for an insane amount of money. Although interestingly enough they have re released several out of print stories starting in June of last year. They’ve also re released stories that are already available in the boxsets such as revenge of the cybermen, battlefield, ghost light and a few others. From what I’ve been able to find they haven’t announced any other re releases since January, which is frustrating because I don’t know if I should buy season 26 or wait for curse of fenric to be re released lol.

Saying they won't look any better actually isn't true. The Blu-rays have a vastly higher bit rate and don't use the compression codecs that were needed for the DVDs, so the images do look much cleaner and much closer to the original transmission tapes. You may not notice it in brief and highly-compressed online clips, but the improvement is most certainly there.

@@theastrogamer710 No, not really. It's never been the BBC's practice (or indeed pretty much any other production company) to hold onto all the original elements that made up the programmes. Once the final edit of a programme has been made and it's been transmitted, there's usually no reason to hang onto it anymore. So material that has survived is often down to luck than a deliberate decision (Shada aside).

For me, it's a pure convenience. As an American fan, DVD's were non-existent, minus one instance I managed to pick up 'Android Invasion' at a Costco somehow. And if you think the Australian Collections were bad, you've yet to see the American Blu Ray collections. For one, the titles are changed. No longer is it "Series 12", but now "Season 1", treating it as the start of a Tom Baker era rather that a continuation of previous Who, which is a pain for collecting. However the biggest pain is that the collections here are purely what comes in the box. There's no pizazz or anything, no extra artwork, no large box to hold it in, it's a standard Blu Ray case with discs jammed in. On one hand, it's amazing to watch some of my favorite episodes for the first time in this way, but everything else about the Collections here in America really isn't worth it.

Also, the logo on the box sets is the current series logo; what if they don't release all the seasons before the next era starts and the logo changes? At least the DVD releases have a consistent design, even up to now with the animated releases (on the reversible cover).

{insert-name-here} The team behind the ranges said that they’d keep this logo even if it changes. I doubt that but in fairness the DVD files kept the Eccleston/Tennant era logo until the end even during Matt Smith’s era.

What a very interesting topic to have chosen. Okay here goes, until now I have resisted buying these, like you I've already got all the existing stories on dvd and, significantly, I don't have a blu-ray player anyway. I still only buy the standard dvd releases for the animated stories when they come out as well. From the topics you covered I was interested to see how different the picture quality was for these but your demonstration showed how you can't really tell there's a Massive difference, maybe it's my monitor? Picture quality isn't the biggest draw for me anyway. What does tempt me every so often is these bundles of new special features and documentaries. Now every fan I've talked to does seem to be buying these, probably because some of them started a lot later than me collecting these stories, which I can understand. As I said before it's only really the extra documentaries that are enticing me, I have suggested a "friends with benefits" scheme where I could go round to another fans house and watch these documentaries at their place. Sadly no one has taken me up on this suggestion...yet. What is turning me off these again is your bit about fans charging huge amounts for their extra sets now all available ones are sold out, that's quite harsh on those who really want them but missed out. In conclusion, I think if I was going to get on this train I should've done when it all started, now they're running through them quite quickly (despite the almost regular delays by about a month each time, again something I'm glad I'm not engaged with) it seems I've been left behind. Thanks for the discussion, though

I currently have season 19 on blu ray because NYSSAA!!!!! Ahem. I mean it was in my local dvd shop for a decent price. But I’m also planning on getting season 26 because it is quite possibly my favourite doctor who series ever and most stories were done on location meaning I can guess the quality may really pay off.

Season 26 won’t have any significant quality improvement. All the footage from Season 23 onwards is on SD videotape, even the material shot on location.

I’ve just started buying the Blu-ray’s since I’m trying to get into Doctor Who itself. I’ve so far loved the new series and finished David Tennant’s run but as for the classic series I’ve been buying them up since I’ve never seen them and well I usually don’t like using streaming services. So far the only one I’m missing is Colin Baker’s set but that’s due to price since in the US it doesn’t suffer from the the limited edition type run the UK and other places get

Being a huge doctor who fan and a massive collector, I wanted these sets after i missed out on season 12 the first time around and since I've purchased every one including the season 12 re release. I know what you mean with flimsy packaging, this happened with season 26 when the disc holder came off the spine which I was annoyed about but luckily I got a replacement sent out. As long as these boxsets come out and I have the money, I'll be purchasing them, I never had all the classic who dvds and I'm more of a blu ray collector so these were up my street. I also love watching a lot of these stories for the first time, which I can't wait to o with season 14 when that arrives.

I got into Doctor Who in 2014, so I missed out on a lot of the Region 1 DVDs. I’ve managed to pick up a few here and there, most of them from physical Barnes and Noble bookseller. Ive stopped buying the DVDs for Doctors 3 and up because blu-rays give me a chance to fill in what I missed. Also in replacing the ones I’ve already bought, it saves space. I just bought Season 26 (Sylvester McCoy season 3 here in region 1 land) from the B&N site.

Great video Josh. I'm purchasing the collection sets because I had to sell my R1 DVD collection to pay bills. To me, The Collection sets are by far more affordable. Unfortunately, the R1 sets are in plain Blu-ray cases without all of the great art and design the UK and AUS sets have. I believe the Beeb will release them again down the road when new tech arrives.

Thanks as always Josh, you’re the best. I’ve been getting these quite by accident in that the first two were gifts to me. Then I bought the next couple or so. Then I started to hang back til a friend told me exactly what you just said here. That if I don’t buy it on release I will end up paying treble the RRP. I didn’t believe that, then I checked amazon and eBay and wow, he was right, same as you are. So I now buy them in release. But even THAT isn’t enough now! As Toms season 14 sold out on pre order on amazon! So I have now panicked and pre ordered from HMV, same price to be fair to them. Thinking ahead, will I buy them all, and if so, why? It’s a yes, and mostly for a couple of the reasons you have stated. Best copies available in terms of cleaned up film etc, some new added effects, and best of all? Space saving. I figured that the enormous dvd collection could arguably be replaced by these sets, taking up a fifth of the space, or less. Any concerns? Only that I wonder what we will be offered when it comes to the early years. Will it be animations, will it be rebuilds of the audio with Cura Telesnaps, or will they actually not include some stories AT ALL? We will see!

Having started buying with season 23 on releases, then picked up season 19 when HMV had extra stock and 18 from CEX at about £65, and recently having ordered the season 12 rerelease, I am now very close to having a complete set. However it feels like season 10 may prove to be the most elusive, and I am financially preparing myself to enter some ebay bidding wars.

For availability, it depends on where you are. Since the classic series in't that popular in the US, it is probably best for Americans fans such as myself to wait a few months to get them as they tend to receive prices drops online. However, like an idiot, I still preorder them rather than waiting. The US boxes aren't as elaborate as the U.K. and Australian boxsets - they are in large blurry plastic box and that is it.

I have nearly filled up all the gaps in my DVD collection so thought I might not worry with Blu-ray. Then I saw lots of reviews about how good the boxsets were and got quite excited to buy them. I was then horrified to find that they are selling out straight away and then being put on eBay, and the like, for hundreds of pounds. Pretty disgusting the way people rip off real fans but what can you do? Guess I'll stick with my DVDs and hope that the BBC re-release the sets in greater numbers so the sets de-value in price!
