Why is Josh NOT doing a show DVD documentary for the BBC? He has a passion and a great way of making the viewer feel that passion. This episode and other effects/restorstion/tech ones are fascinating. He's taken it to a new level. Not a fan but a future success in the media and effects industry. 60s Who has some great effects. It's just got that campy science fiction b- movie charm that serves it really well. You've done an amazing job with it

Back in the late eighties, I created a starfield in my bedroom, similar to Josh's (fairy lights don't work, as stars are not in strings). Black card, perforated, with light bulbs behind it. I had a rotating planet (a ball), and flew a spaceship through space, made from the inside of a toilet cistern! Do you know what? It didn't look too bad! Unfortunately, the VHS footage is long gone! Unless it turns up like a lost episode?

The model shots turned out great. Something I learnt from the Red Dwarf DVDs is that they would shoot the model shots on those super speed cameras, so when played back at regular speed, everything appeared to move more like it would in space. You can get the same basic effect using slow motion effects. In regards to the speaker holes, would you be able to get a sticker or something that could cover it?

Great stuff! Watching Doctor Who in the 70s as a kid is what got me first interested in VFX and models - the hands on nature of the show encourages experimentation like this. I ended up making a career out of it!

I always enjoy videos about 60s Doctor Who and its special effects. It's by far the most underappreciated era of the show and it's my favourite.

The tardis toys annoy me in that they have the stupid speaker holes and battery compartment. I’m sure someone savvy enough could make a really nice accurate tardis model to the one they used.

“I wanted a natural glow”... “with thousands of luminous spheres” props to anyone who gets this reference.

60s Dr. Who had better model work than Star Trek: The Original Series imo, especially considering the variety in the model shots for Dr Who in comparison to Star Trek.

Lovely to see you back on You Tube Josh. I have the same TARDIS and chuckled when I saw the speaker holes on the back of it as it was rotating through space. It's a splendid recreation of an age when Doctor Who was a fun, far less serious show for kids and their families.

Ayyy!! This is spectacular!! :D I absolutely adore 60s Doctor Who for this very reason! It's pure genius (especially the filming the spaceship scenes upside down and how they made the title sequence) :o Awesome video!! :)

I think the biggest shortcomings of this sequence were 1) the TARDIS was bouncing all over the place and 2) it was spinning too fast. To counteract 1) a rail with which you could attach the string and TARDIS to above the view of the camera would help make it more fluid when moving across the camera, and simply making the TARDIS spin less when moving it across would definitely have made it more authentic looking

As I recall from the info text the strings were attached to the sides of the ship on DIOE. The Ark in Space and Revenge of the Cidermen, sorry, I mean Cybermen used pea lights attached to black drapes as a star field. :-) Oh, I see you corrected where the wires were attached in your comment.

Great video! I love those TARDIS models - the late Troughton era one you use here is possibly my favourite - but every time a new one appears, I get depressed. Why? Easy. Those damn holes. I can't let them lie. I have to fill them with model putty, sand it all down, scribe the wood pattern back in, then mix paint of the right colour - and there is no particular shade of 'TARDIS Blue' - they're all different, and then weather it to match. You can take these TARDISes apart, but they are tough beasties, and, unless you are 100% sure of what you are doing, I wouldn't recommend it (PB Props has a video on this, if you are interested). I have to do this - I know they are there, even if I can't see them.

They have a certain look that makes me enjoy it even more.

Tiny bit of filler in those speaker holes and then acrylic paint to match the rest should do the trick.

The way your Tardis is made, it looks like the Tardis got shot at one point.

There's this place in the UK called Forbidden Planet which sells all sorts of Harry potter, Star Wars and Anime but they sell Doctor Who incredibly cheap. Recon Dalek on Amazon is £18. FP is £9 13th TARDIS on Amazon is £25. FP is £18

You've also done a great job of recreating David Bowie's 1983 hairstyle. EDIT: Well it looked like it from the front lol.

60s Were the best of Doctor Who in my opinion

Great stuff! Loving it. Suggestions? Block the holes with blue plasticine (you can get rid of it later). Do try the string from the bottom. Shoot at a higher frame rate, and playback at a normal rate (slow mo) it will even out the wobbles a bit. More stars. Tardis noises.

this is super cool. And weirdly, that colour 16:9 shot with the light in frame has an oddly late 80s look to it, I could imagine that in a trial episode or mccoy. I have that tardis model, it's a nice one.

I think in some Tardis Shots they had a wire on the top like you did but also had a wire underneath weighted to stop the box from wobbling so much! Gotta say, good job with the TARDIS. And yes, those speaker holes in your TARDIS toy are annoying. I would know cuz I have the same one. That said, to all the other model film makers out there, I recommend using different sized TARDIS models. It would allow for smaller scale filming whilst getting across that same kind of feel that we got from this video. Another thing, let's say you wanted to recreate the Time Vortex from the new series but didn't have the CGI budget the Mill had. Well, if you attached a bunch of LEDs to an electrical fan, you could potentially recreate that sort of swirling effect from the T Davies era.

Great job! In the late 80'sI used to to this type of effects with my still camera set for double exposure and take a photo of my TARDIS model and then go outside for the large shot. The effect came out great with the TARDIS looking like it was fading in/out.

3:14 This looks ideal for a modern title sequence done entirely in-camera. The BBC really should try a more practical approach. The modern title sequences look flashy, but they don't age well at all; the Eccelston/Tennant vortexes look like bad CGI nowadays.

Time ram two police boxes next time, haha.

I have a solution to RECOVER ALL 97 MISSING EPISODES ...... All we need to do is travel away from Earth FASTER THAN THE SPEED OF LIGHT. We can then catch up with the original 60s TV broadcasts, whizzing through space, and RECORD THEM AGAIN! 👍

Cut a thin piece of colour matched card and stick over that perferated panel. That should help the illusion. I agree that is annoyance. I guess they must have used the same mould for one that does have sound fx. I remember building a Tardis out of cardboard as a child. It looked really good for distant shots. Just like Matt Irvins Troughton model, it eventually somehow vanished... I hadnt even installed a dimensional stabaliser circuit! 😜

This is some quality content here Josh, as always. I prefer model shots over CGI so this is chad stuff. I probably would have used one of those new TARDIS models they put out alongside the new action figures. Would have no speaker holes, but I'm not sure if the scale would be right?

Didn't the BBC use 16mm rather than the crazy expensive 35mm? Also, love the photos of Ian Scoones with the Tardis. He was a VFX Wizard, considering what he had to work with. Do you know Blake's 7? That's the other huge 70/80s Scifi show the BBC did, with almost everyone from Doctor Who working on it at some time. Scoones did some awesome work with the Liberator at Bray Studios, helped in lighting the models with the guy who did the VFX for Alien (can't remember his name). But that show had so many amazing practical model shots, in particular the regularly used Liberator Beauty shots and the Scorpio in the Xenon Base. Amazing stuff on a BBC Budget. But love that whole era of VFX work, wish I could have been working on that back then.

Looks pretty sweet! I remember early 70s effects with the TARDIS wobbling g slightly. Early 80s had TARDIS movement very still (e.g. Full Circle). I wonder if they affixed something on the bottom as well as from the top and pulled on both simultaneously to eliminate the wobble? Sadly, those 80s fx were on video using Quantel and in ways look more dated :(. Yet they still have a charm since they were pushing the newest technology at the time and that's when it looked the best, bar none.

Awesome video. It'd be really interesting if they brought back miniature model sequences for new episodes. CGI is probably cheaper, easier and makes better looking results though.

To be fair, if the crew in the 1960s were in a hurry, they might have had someone rush out and get a toy for a miniature shot, so it's really not that bad. On another note, have you ever thought of (or already done, as I haven't seen all your vids yet) redoing the miniature puppet sequences from Invasion of the Dinosaurs? You'd probably do better than the company the BBC hired for it (who went out of business just after).

Actually I think the model sequences in the 60s were better than some of those in the 70s and 80s (see Logopolis Part 4 and when the TARDIS first lands in Spearhead from Space Part 1. I'm yet to see one from the 60s that looks as unconvincing. Alright, I haven't watched all that many classic episodes but I have seen many clips. Also, your recreation was really nice.

Josh, I have always been fascinated by model sequence. Wether it be Quatermass and the pit or out of the unknown or even doctor who. There is something fascinating about exploding objects moving through the air. One of my favourite things to do model effects with is a UFO from earth vs the flying saucers. But anyway your videos are some of the best on KZfaq. It seems lockdown has bought out the best in us.

With a touch of post to make this shot appear as being played back from film or a TV broadcast this would maybe even pass muster as a shot from the 60s. I think this would be “allowed” given you are “constrained” by shooting & broadcasting digitally.

Nice! Missing the vortex sound tho

You could do with some decent stars as the fairy light strings don't convince at all. They remind me of the "Old Grey Whistle Test" titles rather than a starfield!!!! Poke a few pinholes in your black background, put up a white background behind that and light the space in between and your shots may look better. Also try to keep the box in focus at all times as it's obvious that it's a tiny model! Do this and it might just look realistic!

Just an idea josh, you want to get your hands on one of those black curtains that have fairy lights stitched in, that working men's clubs have up on the stage for saturday nights when the club turns on (after the Bingo)! I bet loads of them have shut down after coronovirus and their floggjng all the assetts off, you mjght bag one on ebay? (Along with a bingo machine with pingppongng balls in).....how 60's would that be?
