A common misconception is that the Goddess Mórrígan is a Fairy Queen, and we believe this may stem from confusion with regard to the word Sidhe, and what it means in different contexts within the Irish tradition. The Mórrígan (and other deity members of the Tuatha Dé Danann) are not viewed as the same as the Sidhe (Fairies) within the native Irish spiritual or mythological tradition. This video explains why, and what the differences are, with Lora O'Brien of the Irish Pagan School.
We provide Online Classes on Irish Paganism, Mythology, History, Heritage, Culture, Magic and Spirituality, taught by native Irish Educators, based in County Waterford, Ireland.

The Tuatha de reside with the sidh on the other plains but the Sidh are other humanoid creatures of varied types. Is this right? They are recognized all over the world in other shapes sizes and names. I am still working on straightening this out in my mind. My Irish father didn’t often mention names but he fully described many beings. My mom was from Trinidad and her Christianity contained many African features she also taught me to say maidin mhaith but she never told me it was Irish. Enough wandering from this old crone. I always learn from your videos.

Some algorithmic fodder: "fairies" are older than the tuatha, older still than those that came before, the fir bolg and formorians (forgive and misspelling, it's early and my books are not handy) To my eclectic view, this makes some sense.

I came across the Aos Sí when searching for Aos Aisde… which is the land my ancestors were said to be lords over from ancient times until well after Christianity hit the shores of Éire. I cannot find a translation for Aisde. I know it’s centered around Castle Drum in Kerry, but I was curious what the word might mean - not necessarily where the land was located. Like who did my ancestors believe they were? People of Aisde - what’s Aisde? Despite my initial question remaining unanswered, it led me down a rabbit hole of the Aos Sí and the Tuatha Dé… thank you for clarifying that Sí is not “mounds” necessarily, at least not when referring to the Aos Sí with ties to the Otherworld.

By the way, *as I understand it*, the "Danann" part of "Tuatha Dé Danann" comes from Christian medieval writings. A more accurate way to refer to the gods collectively is actually "Tuatha Dé", which translates as "God People"

I have seen An Mórrígan referred to as the Queen of the Sídhe - is that an inaccurate title, not a true literature source title, or true but still doesn't mean She's a Sídhe? Thank you for this explanatory video nonetheless!

If it's in reference to the sidhe cave location, grand. It they mean Queen of the Fairies, not grand. As outlined in the video 🤷‍♀️

@@Tyndalic Thank you . Is there a reason why the spirits of the dead live and walk in ireland ? They seem to congregate there .
@Tyndalic
@Tyndalic Ай бұрын
@@Jodigi12 maybe because the Tuatha de Dannan were defeated there and were made to go underground. Then were lied about and turned into myths.
