Are there any "lost books of the Bible"? Chad talks about three categories of books that are often described as "lost," especially those in the Apocrypha and the Psedepigrapha. Are these books useful for understanding the NT? How so? Should Christians read them?

Marvellous entry again brother Chad Bird. The biblical canon itself is a big deal to consider when studying Scripture as there are tons of nuances to consider. As for the Apocrypha, just pick a good Good News Bible and read them. Such books could definitely be a tremendous tool to learn about Jewish intertestamental history and some other aspects of OT Israel. I'd recommend Dr. George Athas' book Bridging the Testaments for a nice introduction to the topic.

I found the Apocrypha very interesting. I accept that it's not canon, but that doesn't mean it can't be useful for my spiritual growth.

They were source books for the books that were in the Bible. I'm sure have read non-fiction books that give references to books out of print. It's sort of like that.

This recommendation to study the "lost" books in order to better understand the Bible seems strange coming from a Protestant pastor.

First, I’m not a pastor. Second, I don’t know why this would be strange at all. For the first two or three centuries after Protestants, including Martin Luther, began translating the Bible into their native languages, the Apocrypha was included in all editions of the Bible, including the King James Version (as I pointed out in the video). Just because we don’t accept certain books has canonical, does not mean that we don’t view them as very useful for understanding the scriptures.

Just as today, biblical life happened within a sociocultural context. Having a broader understanding of biblical contexts helps us become better students of scripture. Holy Spirit, our teacher, can give us a thicker theology if we are willing to learn. It takes humility to dig into and study the word.
