Hollywood has this strange habit of releasing two movies around the same time. I'm talking Armageddon and Dante's Peak, Friends With Benefits and The Truman Show, Shark Tale and The Prestige. Movies so similar that it will blow your mind out of your butt. Leave a like don't forgot I'm counting on you. Thanks for watching.

Transformers: Age of Ultron was released a year after Avengers: Age of Extinction. Both feature combat droids meant to be used for defence. Both have a silver robot take over the droid army. Optimus Prime's redesigned to look like Iron Man and also fly now. Both have good guys that are each marketed to a specific colour or stereotype. Obviously, one is a lot better than the other.

A fascinating one to me is "Exorcist: The Beginning" and "Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist" Both films star the same lead actor (Stellan Skarsgård) playing the same role in the same basic premise. Dominion (Dir. Paul Schrader) was the original attempt, but the studio wanted a more audience pleasing horror movie and had Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, Elm Street 4) to come in and shoot a whole new, similar movie with a different script. They released "Exorcist: The Beginning" to overwhelmingly negative response and then decided to allow Paul Schrader to release his version which received moderately better responses. Both have been released as a double feature together on DVD. What's most interesting to me is probably the fact that it's not even alternate cuts using reshot/deleted footage between the two. They shot two different movies with the same actor and roughly the same story with different scripts.

I heard from a screenwriter a on a podcast a while back explaining why this “two similar films” thing happens in Hollywood. The reason being is that studios who get hundreds of scripts every year often get the same scripts. They employ script readers (yes that is a real job) to sift through them all and those same readers will come back saying “this is pretty good” and sometimes they will be the same script or concept. These scripts are not all bought individually so if they are shared anyone can just look and read them if they like. Sure it’s weird as an outsider looking in thinking “hey it’d be too easy to get these movie confused” and your right but the studio mind set is “you don’t make it someone else will.” Better not lose out.

They still seem like the same vague idea got batted around Hollywood and / or one studio tried to ape of anothers success. Fun fact about Mission to Mars, its based off a ride from Disney and predates the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. It’s actually the second movie ever to be based off a disney ride, the first one being the Tower of Terror made for tv movie that only I remember.

Always had the same thought but about Kunis and Portman instead- hot off the back of Black Swan where they're playing rivals for a part, they both play the same role in their identical next film. Did one hear about the idea through the other? Weird coincidence if not.

Dennis Quaid's Doc Holliday in Wyatt Earp (a much more realistic take on the story) is one of the best, most overlooked performances in the last 30 years. He totally transformed his body for the role, losing something like 60 lbs to play the part of a dying man, and his portrayal is badass. "My momma always told me, 'Never put off 'til tomorrow people you can kill today'."
