I’ve always been a visual learner so when I found the aesthetic notetaking community, I was instantly stricken. Doing my notes more aesthetically actually helped me do better in school because I put a lot of effort and care into my study notes. However, I’m super hypercritical about how I do it. It’s gotten to the point where if the header wasn’t right, I would get extremely frustrated and end up starting all over again. As you can imagine, it’s not very productive. I’ve just learned to accept that not every note is going to be showcased for pintrest or whatnot and I should be focusing on the actual MATERIAL of the subject.

YES FOR REAL! especially with OCD or as a perfectionist, taking neat notes can be frustrating! what I do now is to write down the notes quickly during school classes and then later I make summaries neatly and in with colors and other things. (Also using a pencil at first for titles helps!) then there is less to write and everything can still look pretty c:

Personally, I think overbuying is the problem here. It's okay to have a few different colors of midliners, pens, sticky notes but we have a problem if you're buying 20. As for tablets, there are definitely cheaper options than iPad pro. As someone who's finished over 2 packs of a4 papers just on printing notes in 5 months, I can definitely see the use for tablets.

As someone who went to art schools since she was in the 4th grade (with an obsession with aesthetics and gel pens), I concur. The iPad didn’t come out until I went to college and books for school didn’t come through for that until around the time I left it. To have the option to be able to use digital media now is definitely something I (and my posture), wish I had sooner.

I feel in some way stdytubers are so far away from their target group that their videos are not for helping anymore but purely to flex. IPad Pro, Kankan, Mildliners.... which normal student school or university has so much money to spare to buy all this? The least. I passed both, my A level (good) and my apprenticeship(very good), with notes taken on some cheap college block and written with a pen that was a freebie once. As long as your notes are readable you're fine. Put some music you like on study, maybe a poster of something or someone you like on the wall in front of you, just feel good in your study environment, that is all that matters and you don't need all that expensive fancy stuff

I’m a normal middle class student doing GCSEs and I’ve got all of those and a lot of my friends and classmates do too - I bought the kanken myself as a bag to use on holiday, mildliners were a Christmas present, the iPad was a birthday present which has completely changed the way I do online school, take notes and access music scores - out of all three I think only the mildliners were a waste of money because I use the iPad more than I use pen and paper and I have every single colour which is pretty useless since I only really use a couple.

While I agree that it has become more boasting than actual functionality, using an old college block and a Bic pen may make people discouraged from studying, and so a hint of aesthetics may encourage people to have a little energy left after grueling 10-15 hour SAT and HSE study sessions.

I personally think that the aesthetic studying and note taking is so overrated! They use specific highlighters, pens and notebooks to write aesthetic notes I feel it’s all so unecessary! I write notes with normal pens and highlighters and they look neat! At first, I was writing notes to make them look aesthetic and pretty (thanks to study tube) but I realized that’s didn’t help me in the long run! I feel like I learn better when I write my own personalized notes!! Where I’m actually studying and understanding my work not wasting time on my _title_ just so it looks aesthetic!!!

They dont have to be brand new or name brand. You should also make sure it is common in case of repairs. The best times to buy tech for less are black friday and thanksgiving. Im not sure where youre from but they should have some holidays where the prices are less. As for regular stationery, you could resort to lowering expectations and trade off a bit of quality for quantity and cost. My info is kinda basic but i hope i could help😊

imma just say 2 things about the ipad pro: 1. do not buy it as a laptop substitute!!!! you have to remember the ipad is a tablet and doesn’t have some hardwares that laptops have so please while you may be able to write on it, you might not be able to access some websites that you may need. i only suggest buying one if you already have a reliable computer/laptop to use! 2. don’t buy a PRO if you don’t need one. i bought the regular 2017 ipad and it works just the same for me. pros add some better upgrades but don’t fall under the spell that pros are the only good ones especially because those are the only ones i ever see on studytube. even when i asked a lot of sellers, many said usually pros are well-suited for those who need more power like architects for drawing, etc.

I personally do like the mildliners. First, they aren’t as wide and bulky as regular highlights (at least where I live) so they can fit into my pencil case better. Also, I’m autistic, and I found that with regular highlighters, the bright fluorescent colours distracted and overwhelmed me when I tried to read my notes. The mildliners are nice and pastel so it’s not harsh on my oversensitive eyes, and they are more comfortable for me to hold because the wide pastel ones (stabilo ect) don’t have proper grips. From a quality standpoint, they work fine. They’re nothing revolutionary, but I’m not looking for revolutionary. I just want something that helps me read my notes undistracted, and that I can hold comfortably. But yeah, they are definitely overhyped.

No you’re not doing anything wrong. I decided to go paperless as I work full time, study part time and carrying books around was out of the question. You are not doing anything wrong. It took me a while to figure out my rhythm and see what worked best for me. Being hyper "organized" may work for some people but it is by no means the only way to be successful. I used to never get better than a C on tests during high school, started switching up my note taking in early college (aka making it more aesthetic) and while it worked for a hot minute, I got exhausted. Eventually I switched to completely digital, printing key concepts, and running through them with maybe a highlighter or two. I actually did the best this way, but it took a while to figure this out. Point is, don't look at study tube videos thinking you must follow them to a t. Play around with it, see what works and doesn't work for you. Try looking at different styles of note taking or maybe completely different ways of studying. Note taking itself may not actually be for you. I had a friend that would create mini songs to memorize information and another that just didn't really study at all other than reviewing class materials handed out.

I used to be that girl who has all those 30 coloured pens and highlighters for “aEstHetIc” note taking but I couldn’t even last a week. All I kept focusing on was how I can make my notes look pretty instead of studying the actual notes. It takes too much time and effort just to do some note takings, suitable for those who has some free times to spare on just notes i guess. Then I just changed my note style to a more minimalist and neat look. Until now, I’ve only used a maximum of 3 coloured pens (generic black, blue and red) and a maximum of 2 different coloured highlighters. This was life changing for, my grades were getting better and now I’m doing my pre meds. It’s also suitable for studying last minute ;)

as someone who lives in a certain part of asia, many japanese products are pretty accessible and shops often have sales! i got most of my mildliners for $1 each, and muji pens are also about $1 too. muji notebooks are hella cheap here, and it’s of quite good quality. i make my notes look nice because i study better, and because it makes me happy. it took me a long time, but i realised i don’t need 1000 brush pens or 50 stickers to be “aesthetic”. i’ve found my style, and what works best for me. so basically, just do what works best! i enjoy using good quality stationery because i am a total nerd for stationery, and i absolutely love writing and doing art, so it’s more comfortable for me in the long run. i’d recommend looking for affordable options in your country! don’t feel pressured to look a certain way because most of the time, people use a system that works for them, or makes them happy. so stop bashing people for liking kankens or mildliners or cute stationery. they have their preferences and so do you. let’s just respect each other, and encourage a healthy study community :)

I noticed in my country that majority of students only buy them because they are popular, although I agree that others are really useful. Like Ipads for example. They can literally save you thousands of paper and is more organized and flexible, however it doesn't have to be the 'pro' version. You can use the standard Ipad and get the same work done.

I was a student 10 yrs ago and let me tell you, whenever I find a “study” anything on YT I do wonder if the people doing them actually study or just spend a lot of time making pretty notes. I actually did great at college and I never really study a lot, I would just go to class, pay attention, and always took notes that would help me remember the lessons. I had pretty notes and people would ask me if I could share them because they were clear and concise; never ever ever needed more than one black pen and maybe one on a different colours, I had a Sakura Gelly Roll in orange that I loved, a highlighter, a mechanical pencil, an eraser, and that was it. I was super broke, so the most expensive thing I had was the gelly roll. No one ever needs more than a notebook and a black pen, whatever extras you have is just personal preference and is fine, people deserves to like what they like without any judgement. Sadly I feel that this trend is actually bad for young people nowadays. We live in a world where young people is already being pressured to look at a certain way or behave a certain way, even have certain experiences... can we just not push them to also have like 100 mid liners and perfect writing and Pinterest worthy notes? School is already pretty hard without them worrying about having certain aesthetic for their bloody notes. Is alright to show a different way to do anything, but let’s be real about it. I have noticed that many of the pretty notes is people checking their books and taking information about it, they don’t really show the notes they take in class, and it makes so much sense to me, teachers won’t wait until you make a perfect title, you shouldn’t be more worried about making it all fit in one page while still making it look pretty. Sometimes there’s no time and even paying attention you scramble to take notes before the next topic is discussed. Even some of the videos I’ve seen they show a bunch of scrap paper or loose paper that they even mention they use to take quick notes during class that later they would redo in their pretty notebook. Some students work a job! When will they have time to do that? And why waste time doing that when you can easily use that time to check the notes you took in class and maybe do your own research and add to them in an useful enriching way? Is great to share your study method, and I love watching people make pretty notes, but why not make it other than just taking pretty notes and maybe show people sources of information, teach them shorthand maybe... I dunno, things that will actually add something valuable to their learning process? However, I do believe that iPads are great. I wish I had one back then because the amount of money and paper I could have saved! No need to print copies every week! Having all my reading there instead of a huge binder that was heavy and occupied so much space in my bag. Lord! That is the one tool I would totally encourage people to invest in. I think is worth it 100%. And let’s be real, I love apple, but there are some windows notebooks that are just as expensive and have similar functions, even android tablets... there are so many options. That is one thing I totally support. I do love writing in paper, but back then maybe it would have saved me a lot of space and money too to be able to do all my school stuff in there. I dunno. It don’t mind so much what she mentioned about writing in it, but I do get it 100%.

As a college student that have class every Monday to Friday from 3pm till 10pm with a part-time job (20 hours a week), I agree that no one has time to rewrite the notes. Maybe some does, but honestly those time are better spending on sleeping or do other necessary tasks. This is where I glad I have my Ipad Air. Instead of rewriting my notes, I just need to adjust them a bit and add information (or rewrite some part that are too ugly) which I couldn’t do if I were writing on normal paper. For someone that has crappy hand writing and messy note taking like me, this is probably the best and most efficient way. So yes, if you’re a student, you should try take notes digitally, doesn’t have to be an Ipad, just some random tablet that you can use a stylus on is good enough. Of course, if you have the money to burn, feel free to do so, but don’t make it the way that “it made me success” because it obviously not. Oh, and a plus for my Ipad Air (or many other tablets) that you can read your ppt slide or your textbook on it without the need of printing it out. You can use GoodNote or Apple Book to do so. I love downloading textbooks as PDF on my Mac and then move it to Apple Book so I can read it on my Ipad. Save time, save money.

This is so true... My whole high school and first year of college was totally not efficient at all. I wasted my time buying stuff that I never use now, bought a lot of "cute" and "aesthetic" notebooks/ journals, that are very expensive. (I could have saved up those money for actual investments now.) Also wasted my time re-writing every single notes that I take in my class, which actually takes up my time for actual review and time for making school plates... Now that I'm in my graduating year, I just really don't care about those stuff anymore. I just buy what is necessary. The only things I buy now is 1 notebook for all my subjects, label/memo flags to keep track of the subjects for that term, 3 pens which is black, blue and red, 1 highlighter and lots of clear book folder for all my organized printed modules. I do this simple organization of my things to not make myself feel overwhelmed by the things I bring to school. If you are an architecture/ interior design student you'll get what I mean. We have all this "required drafting materials" and adding more to what you bring is a big hassle, especially if you commute to your university everyday. My advice for anyone who's looking for efficient study tips is to make use of your digital planners, don't waste money buying all those very expensive journals. Digital planners makes you stay reminded of what pending tasks needs to be done, also make use of your cloud storage, and other collaborative online drives (more efficient in sharing group/collaboration works, not messenger or other social media apps). Second is to never delay any schoolwork more than 3 days, more than 3 days just means that you'll probably never do it and forget about that activity for some time. Procrastinating on your assignments is never the solution for getting high grades. I am a very big procrastinator and I still am up to this day, but I'm trying my best to limit my procrastination habits. But guess what I survived all my terms so far while being a procrastinator, I guess that last minute panic sometimes help haha. Third is to always write notes while in class, do not be dependent on re-writing at home. If the professor had already provided notes/powerpoints/pdfs beforehand, do not re-write it anymore, only jot down the important details of the discussion and summarize it by bullet points in your notebook. This makes it more easier for you to remember what was being said on the discussion or the key-points. It may not be the best quality or aesthetic, but it is the content of the subject that counts. (Also in college professor's don't even care about your notes, they only thing they care about is if you were actually listening to their class). And also for me, I write in actual paper and not on my ipad because it has more memory retention when I actually write it on paper. Last advice is to always keep your desk, clean and organized, same with your digital storage. Have a weekly/ monthly decluttering and backup of school files. Having too much clutter on your surroundings makes it harder for you to focus, remove distractions whenever you are in the middle of a review. Have self discipline. p.s. For the design student's out there who are always required to buy drafting materials, remember to just buy the necessary stuff. You don't need all of those drafting tools in your higher years. If you did buy new ones, you can always sell it to the lower batches for a lower cost. ;) Always remember to work smarter, not harder. Aesthetics doesn't necessarily equal to productivity. But hey that is just my own share of opinion.

Washed it twice in laundry machine and it comes out perfectly clean just like new but still broken in. I even bothered to get the zipper fixed for like $15 when it broke. It’s very comfortable, simple with little pockets and durable. I hope to use it until I graduate high school and maybe after that. I love it so much-only minor regret is that sixth grade me picked an obnoxious color lmao The bag is also timeless- prior to purchasing this bag I would get a new backpack every year. Though I think me being a small kid influenced that

For the last couple of years, I used to feel so unsatisfied with my life for not having an iPad and only having 5 different highlighters which don’t even match in appearance. It might sound vain but it does get to you eventually when people are using iPads with aesthetically pleasing highlighters in 90% of study videos where they look super productive. I even bought a dozen of coloured marker pens because I was so caught up by the “aesthetic note-taking” trend. But my perfectionist side didn’t go well with it since I couldn’t help rewriting the notes all over again when there was a slightest imperfection in my “aesthetic notes”. It got to the point I actually ended up not getting my studies done which affected my grade. I’ve gotten over that phase now thankfully. People should figure out whether it works for them or not before trying to fit themselves into a certain lifestyle. It might work for many of the people you see but it might not work for you.

I totally see what you mean by the iPad handwriting experience being different than what you expected. I often have a hard time writing with my apple pen because of the tight grip I have to maintain when writing with it. As a student who commuted to school, I will definitely say this though: it totally helps to have an iPad as opposed to a combo of laptop + notebooks. It was a strain on my back to carry everything prior to buying an iPad, especially when walking to my classes which can be super far away from each other. For lecture notes I definitely recommend notability as you can record your lecturer on the document that you are writing on and you can replay specific lecture parts by clicking on keyword that you write during lecture. Then you can do revised lecture notes when you can at a pace you are comfortable with. Also, in addition to a paper like or matte screen protector I feel like a pencil grip or a cover of some sort would be a good addition to your apple pen so that you have a smoother writing experience. You can also use the zoom feature on notability + good notes to write easier imo. I still miss the real pen/pencil experience however, which is why I don't do digital planning. Thank you for the video!! I hope this helps anyone :)

A lot of the price is to do with promoting and engaging with sustainable and ethical production. Paying employees living wages and finding production places that are environmentally conscious. They do also last. Some people are using the backpacks that their parents used. But they are also expensive and not ergonomic at all. They're also clearly aimed at Swedish people and the Swedish median income level that can afford something like this, especially if you're buying one for a kid for the rest of their school years.

I’ve used an ipad throughout my college and here’s my take on it. As someone who is used to pen and paper for more than 15+ years, I felt that it was harder to read on an ipad as compared to pen and paper. On ipad, we usually zoom in and zoom out to read it or take notes more clearly. Therefore, the memory retention isn’t as good. It’s super useful for taking notes in class as u can move the notes u have made around, easily making more space without needing to erase or liquid the mistakes away and this saves time, or u can straightaway take pictures of the diagram your lecturer drew and place it next to your notes. But after class, I still find myself printing out the notes and copying it back out on paper for easier revision. But an ipad is useful as I’m using less paper (I write out stuff repeatedly on paper to memorize easier). I also download textbooks inside my ipad, not having to carry the textbooks around with me. I can also record my lectures and listen back to them if I need. An ipad is a great tool to help with your studies, but not enough to replace pen and paper.
@user-qh9lv1to3k
@user-qh9lv1to3k 3 жыл бұрын
Wow I couldn't agree more with the memory retention part. Memorizing the location of particular content within a book/print-out usually boosts my memory but it's impossible to actively recall the content and its location when studying with an ipad because you constantly have to zoom in and zoom out. Plus when I have the papers I can physically/intuitively assume how much I've done and how much is left either by sight or even weight but with ipad it's just bunch of endless pdf pages so it isn't as 'tangible' if you know what I mean. Ipad definitely helps studying but it can never replace paper and pencils. The latter is the best when you're goal is to actively 'grasp' the material.

I absolutely adore Kånken backpacks and in general their products! So much so even my wallet and laptop sleeve are from them! Adding on to how lasting they are, the classic kankens are water resistant, and you can wax them to make the resistance last longer over time. I think people often think about how expensive they are, but like mentioned in the video, this is the price you pay for fair wages for the people that make them :D

I was OBSESSED with kanken until i went to try it on in the store, and let me say, its horrible during the winter in Canada and upper USA, cuz its horrible with a parka. I would suggest a macaroon backpack or if you have money to spend, a lululemon. But the lululemon is great for its price cuz it has pockets for EVERYTHING like your waterbottle, laptop, phone or mask, notebooks and food. BUT, the macaroon is great too.

I remember when i was a freshman i tried to make my notes 'aesthetic' being it full color and having diagrams illustrations hand drawn... i could not keep up w/ it esp my prof have ~120 slides per topic and i realized instead of using my time rewriting and beautifying my notebooks i'll use that to properly review and study. I almost jumped w/ the kanken trend when im new to the studytube/gram community but it was sooo expensive and not available locally, then i discovered doghnut and himawari bags w/c are cheaper and have more space and compartments ✨ Kokuyo is just the best notes for me! ✨ they're super neat and beautiful to write on! Plus the mildliners really are the best highlighter for me! They have great colors and do not bleed... but for a cheaper alternative, i also use a highlighter set from daiso w/c is ~$2 and works very well like the mildliners. I do want to try muji coz of minimalism and many others use it but it's not available in my place, i did try to search online but they're way to expensive! 😂 Seriously tho, while being in the studytube community inspires me and a great way to relax and feel motivated, there are times it is soo intimidating because of these fancy stationery and tools that sometimes i lose the confidence to study just because im not as aesthetic or have the same materials as them

Short answer from an unknown student: oui My iPad 7 works just as well as an iPad pro since I only draw and take notes on it. Mildliners are average and I regret paying even $15 for three packs on Amazon a while back. Muji items are average as well. It looks aesthetic but if you're broke, don't bother going out of your way or feeling bad because you don't have these items.

100% agree. I rarely, if ever, take notes on my 7th gen but it is where I draw 80% of the time and it suits my needs just fine. I couldn't imagine shelling out that much money on an iPad Pro + pencil _just_ to draw, especially since it's overkill for what I would use it for. So glad I also didn't really buy any of those ~aesthetic~ pens because I probably would've used them once or twice and then never touched them again lol

i have a question for you, do you also have a separate laptop that you use or do you also use your ipad to function like a laptop? see my issue is that i have a laptop but it runs super slow and often shuts off. plus it’s quite heavy on my back and since i’m a commuter student i found that a burden to bring my laptop back and forth. i’m conflicted if i should get the pro to act like a tablet for things like notes and assignments as well function like a laptop when i need it or to get another version of ipad or even look for a smaller/lighter laptop or even a diff brand of tablet.

Respectfully, I agree with everything you said except your opinion on the iPad Pro. Switching to the iPad for taking notes revolutionized the way I studied. I no longer had a cluttered desk full of stationery, and all I needed was the apple pencil to take beautiful and effective notes. Furthermore, I found writing on the iPad to be less fatiguing than on paper due to there being literally no lag and less resistance. If any of y'all are headed to college, definitely get one of these. They make studying so fun and most importantly, easy!! And also, I came back to add this: to my fellow pre-meds or anyone planning to go to grad school, it is incredibly beneficial to have an iPad, especially with Notability, because you can store notes from all of your pre-med classes or science classes and access them years later, instead of having to store several binders filled with paper. I will complete college after taking more than 30 science classes and it is absolutely unrealistic to store all of my notes from each class. With Notability, I can easily search for keywords (it recognizes my handwriting perfectly!) which makes it tremendously convenient to find notes relating to specific topics while studying for the MCAT and other tests. Bottom line, nobody needs an iPad to study, pen and paper works fine. But an iPad makes studying and organizing a hell of a lot more easier and fun! As with any new piece of technology, there is quite a big learning curve when it comes to learning how to use it effectively. Here are my tips for the iPad Pro: 1. One of my biggest issues with adjusting to writing on the iPad was getting used to the weight of the Apple Pencil. It is quite heavy and it lay in an uncomfortable position on one of the bones in my hand when writing. I bought a really cheap grip from Amazon and this made it a lot more comfortable. 2. Personally, I didn't feel the need to buy a screen protector to improve my writing experience. While the way the apple pencil glides across the iPad Pro's surface is very different from paper, I preferred this as I felt less strain even after long periods of taking notes. 3. If you are able to afford an iPad Pro, get the 12.9 version and don't zoom in when taking notes. This slows you down and makes you focus more on the aesthetics. Aesthetics are important but at the end of the day, what matters is that you are taking efficient notes that help you learn the content. Writing without zooming in and treating the iPad like a piece of paper rather than a piece of tech improves your speed AND efficiency. 4. For the first month or two, you WILL miss paper. But the important thing is to stick with the iPad. Do not reach for paper. Do you need to do some quick math scratch work? Use your iPad. Need to make a small note about an assignment? Do it on your iPad. The more you force yourself to use your iPad for everything, the easier your transition to note-taking. 5. If you are like me and get easily distracted, AVOID GoodNotes and GET Notability. Notability is a minimalistic and neat note-taking app that minimizes distractions by providing you with less options. It is very well organized and helps you take efficient notes.

the good part is that everyone can see what works for them! a lot of people think that the product is either good or bad but I find that the coolest part of using stationery and techniques is that everyone find/create what really work for them and what they like! an iPad is really expensive so im glad that it was worth it for you!

proc_rai_stinating To be honest, I don’t personally know anyone who actually listens back to their notability recordings (I definitely never found it useful). But if organization and/or keeping your notes for the long-term are a priority to you, Goodnotes is probably your best bet. I have a video on my “channel” where I talk a bit about Goodnotes.

@@railene9335 Personally, I prefer Notability because it has a simpler interface and good organization. Both apps are great - it just depends on what you're looking for.

For me the problem is that there are plenty of youtubers out there saying to get the iPad Pro when the base iPad is enough for education purpose. Some even go as far as to say there is a huge diff in laminated display which is honestly not that big of a deal. So yes iPads are great for studies but iPad Pro is over powered for most students and totally unnecessary.
