The reason I didn't get metal food containers was because I can't heat it up in the microwave at work. I use silicone Stasher bags instead

Thats the main reason I havent gotten them either. I take foods to be reheated more often than not to work, so the tiffins wouldnt make sense for me. Otherwise they sound lovely, just not practical to me.

I don't have the numbers but my manufacturing engineer husband says that when it comes to the tiffin you'd "break even" in the hundreds of used rather than the in thousands that you estimated. Additionally, he brought up that metal working technology is getting greener and greener with arc furnaces (whatever that means 😅).

When I got my current phone a few years ago, I bought a pela case on your recommendation. I drop my phone so much and there’s no evidence of that on my phone or the case! I love how the case doesn’t get dented or scratched. I also bought pela sunglasses and I love them so much and I baby them unlike any other pair I’ve ever bought because I want to make sure they last. The only gripe I have with pela is that I’ve noticed recently (through online ads) that they’re coming out with limited edition holiday phone cases, and I think that’s a little backwards for a company that’s trying to be sustainable? I just think buying something sustainable isn’t really sustainable if you’re buying more than you need.

Never let perfectionism stop you from doing things that make sense for your life. I have never been able to find a shampoo bar that works for me, so I stopped obsessing over it and moved on. I don't want to expend any more of my attention and energy on it. Finding what works for you and sticking with (like the shampoo refills) frees you to focus on doing the work the planet needs.

Fully agree! I love shampoo bars, but after using them exclusively for 5+ years, my scalp began having major issues. I was pretty bummed that I needed to buy bottled shampoo again after so many years without it, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do! Now I alternate using bars vs liquid shampoo, doing it this way seems to work for my scalp AND helps both products to last much longer

My local farmers market has a stall that sells bar shampoo and soap. I get eczema pretty bad when I use most bottle soaps; is why I had switched to begin with. However, when the doc suggested a more natural soap, I was already learning some things (composting) I could do that would be better for the planet. Using this soap that is made locally, naturally, and doesn't make me itchy and look all spotted is a +++.

I feel like shampoo bars are truly hit or miss, it seems like people either love them or hate them and I know it can take a while to find one that works for you specifically, rarely does someone find the perfect shampoo bar on the first try. Everyones hair is different so it’s impossible to expect one shampoo working for everyone. I was scared to try solid shampoo (I’m very anxious and ”protective” when it comes to my long hair lmao) but it’s truly the best thing I’ve done for my hair. It lathers perfectly, it almost completely stopped my scalp acne, my whole head of hair needs just two lathers to clean compared to 4 with liquid shampoo, I barely need to use a conditioner anymore, my hair stays clean for a full extra day, the bars end up being much cheaper than liquid, it takes up less space, easier to travel with… I love everything about them! I truly swear by shampoo bars now, liking them so much also helped push me to switch to solid soaps for my body and face aswell. So my shower routine is 100% plastic free now! 🌱

The best food containers to me are the ikea glass ones with the sealable plastic lid, I know they are not sustainably made, BUT they are affordable, super high quality, I can put whatever in them and it won't spill, I can freeze stuff, reheat in the microwave or oven, so versatile! Since they are a "once in a lifetime" kind of purchase, I don't feel bad at all...highly suggest them! (please ikea pay me! 🤣)
@electriiceso
@electriiceso Жыл бұрын
I kind of agree with you on this. I actually love that the lids and containers are sold seperately cause if something bad happens to the lid or container i can go and get that part (theres nothing worse than having a container and no lid and you cant even replace the lid cause it only comes in a 26 pc set or not avaliable). And i see those containers in thrift stores often enough that i now have a bit of a collection. And each lid fits like 2-3 different size containers. If you have to buy new and want something practical that will last you a long time and are affordable, the ikea resuable containers are def the ones to go for. I know there are more ethically made options out there, but I dont have the funds for it and a lot of the good stuff isnt even avaliable in Canada (unless I want to pay like $40 in shipping and pay customs on top of that)

I so relate to your commentary about "chasing the best thing" wow. So I worked in the cosmetic retail industry for 5 years and I was only able to realize how it sucked my soul out after I left. I was constantly chasing the "best" product-- the best mascara, the best cleanser, the best moisturizer, etc. I wasted so much money buying products, only using them a few times, and then tossing them months or years later when my cabinets would fill to the brim from constant shopping. It overwhelmed me. And I got so jaded hearing women come into the shops I worked at looking for that perfect product too. it made me self-reflect and realize how duped we had all been into wasting so much time, effort, money, and resources. Ever since I stopped working in those spaces and stopped watching that kind of content on KZfaq I haven't bought a single beauty item. I probably have enough makeup and personal care products to last me another year.

Great point at the end. I've tried to make sustainable swaps when I can. I wear contacts, and for a while wore the 2 week ones, but I work in a hospital and am exposed to all sorts of nasty germs and the thought of taking my contacts out everynight to swim and breed whatever germs I have picked up in my lenses each night just grossed me out. And I can't wear glasses because I don't want them broken by a confused patient. Not every sustainable option works for everyone.

There's something to be said for actually being a customer of larger brands and advocating for them to improve. While P&G may never reach a level of sustainability that many of us are comfortable with, a vocal group of their customers pushing for small improvements drives a lot of change for people beyond just those advocating. Yes, people can still advocate for P&G to improve without being a P&G customer, but it does ring more true for companies when actual customers are speaking up (and sharing what they do like about those products).

For me, i had (and currently have) problems with sustainable deodorants; i have tried 15 different sustainable deodorants and none have worked for me, either they just last 2-4 hours which is not compatible with my lifestyle, or they do work for a decent amount of time (not perfect though) but hurts my skin in the long run (after around 4 days of use, my skin literally starts to peel off and hurts). So i had to go back to regular deodorants, and to be honest i dont have the time, money, energy and opportunity to keep trying more; what i try to do is alternate between the normal ones and the sustainable one that irritates my skin, keeping all the necessary precautions to avoid it (deep moisturizing, using it every tow days tops, etc.), this way at least im not using the normal ones all the time :(

Also, I completely agree with you about compostable phone cases! I used Pela cases for years, but when I upgraded phones, the store had a different compostable case brand that I grabbed [convenience. not as good of a company as Pela, which is why I'm not naming it.]. It has lasted me a full two years and is still going strong. I never got that kind of use out of the Otterboxes or Lifeproof cases. I like the wall! And I love the “do your best” thought process, shampoo bars have taken a bit of getting used to but they do work for me & I’ve switched to bars for everything but hand soap since for some reason bars dry my hands out worse than anything I use in the shower. The only other thing I would say isn’t worth it in my case right now is the pela cases, I really liked mine but it started to fall apart after a few years and I couldn’t justify replacing it for $50+(I think the price might have gone up since then too) multiple times over the years so I just got a secondhand plastic one that will last me as long as I have this phone. I’d love to get more cases from them in the future but I couldn’t afford it right now. I think I’d be the same with sustainable makeup if I used any, I’d need to be in a better financial situation to afford a lot of the more sustainable options(especially with these things that need replacing every so often)

I think shampoo bars might take a bit to find the right one, I personally have used 2 so far and the first was really nice on my hair while the other felt like it dried out my scalp and just wasnt nice, I’m still trying to get through that bad one by just using less of it at once so it doesnt feel as bad on my scalp and I have a different brand to try after that. It might also take some time and use for your scalp to get used to a shampoo thats not as harsh as many big brand shampoos are but it can all depend on the person. Also for food containers, I have a few microwaveable glass ones but I also tend to save glass jars or a few nicer plastic containers that I end up with from various foods and use those to take drinks or food to work. When you mentioned that steel has a huge carbon footprint it made me really glad that I choose to thrift a metal insulated cup instead of buy a new one recently (my old plastic one broke)!

One idea to use up your bad shampoo bar is to use it as hand soap bar or dissolve it in water to use it as a liquid hand soap(it might expire quickly afterwards though). When I switched to the ethique shampoo because my old liquid one was making my hair fall out, I used up the old shampoo by using it as handwashing soap and it worked pretty well.

I love the do your best advocate for the rest mentality. In my opinion as long as you’re asking yourself ‘is this the most sustainable choice I can make given the options and resources available to me?’ as a habit you’ll be way farther along than most. Better to be hitting the mark at 70% most of the time vs 100% for a short time and burning out on it, and in the meantime it’s important to preserve some energy (and joyfulness!) to do the group / systems work that is so needed. I don’t know anyone who has been keeping this work close to heart for the long term who maintains the “purity culture” mindset of perfect or nothing- you can’t. Also it’s hard to create and maintain effective ally relationships by holding others to an extreme personal standard.

I totally agree with the point about using whatever works best for you, if you've tried the more sustainable option and it doesn't fit your life. I have a shampoo bar I absolutely love from Lush, but I haven't found a conditioner bar I like so I still use liquid conditioner, and that's okay

Great video! I just got my first Who Gives a Crap order and I’m really excited! I want to try out the dream cloths 😊. I was also wondering - what do you think of the Minimal silicone collapsible food containers? I don’t have any yet but since they get so small I’d actually be able to take them with me since I usually find that portability is my barrier for bringing food containers. I also like that they’re both oven and microwave safe so I was curious what you think of them

First and foremost: I don’t know WHO is telling you that your wallpaper isn’t cute, because while I myself would be in need for more color, for your home it looks amazing! Secondly: I appreciate that you came back to some of these products and really thought critically about them for us. Like many, you had gotten me to think and buy differently (my partner and I are on the way to buying a bidet I swear 🤪). Not only have you been able to use these products long term and tell us about it, but you were able to really think about truly if its worth the extra resource from the planet, and money spent. It’s something worthwhile that we should all be able to do in our day-to-days. I’ll quit rambling- thanks for another amazing video! ❤️✌️

That was a nice, and honest review- really appreciate it, as always! And I also firmly believe, that sometimes we can just indulge in something that is not inheritely "zero waste", as we also need to feel good with ourselfs in order to do good thing (talking e.g. about the shampoo bars). But could not happen to notice, you had a peculiar tone of voice. I am not really following much lately, as been busy as hell - did something happen? If anything is going on, hope it will get better soon! And if not, and my ears are just messing up with me, sorry for the comment;) Cheers!

If I've understood it correctly the thing that actually expires in makeup that's important is the preservatives, so bacteria can start to grow. I'd reccommend that you at least throw them out if you start to get more acne (facepowders) or get stye (eyeshadows), and be very diligent with cleaning your brushes

I've started using a shampoo bar as a more sustainable and silicone-free alternative to the silicone filled shampoos I used before, and it's so much better for my hair. It took a while for me to get used to it, but I use it with a scalp massager (like a silicone brush) and I personally really love it.

I'm chemically hypersensitive so some soaps and makeup works for me and some don't. I figure if the sustainable product works for you then use it, and if it doesn't work for you then don't buy it again but do use it up... unless it gives you a rash (toss anything that gives you a rash).

I knew it to be true but it's so nice to hear it from someone like you as well bc I don't know if you know this, but your followers absolutely believe your word is gospel sometimes lol. But it's nice to hear that we're allowed our one or two guilty pleasures. For me, it's antiperspirant deodorant. I've tried so many, including Native but bc I have a baking soda allergy, most natural deodorants literally cause chemical burns on my armpits. And the natural ones without baking soda don't seem to do the trick. I pride myself on trying to use natural and sustainable things in my home, ESPECIALLY things that touch or go into my body but switching back to antiperspirant brought back a level of confidence for me that I'm so happy to have again.

We have swapped to a very nearly zero plastic household for shower, cleaning, laundry, toilet, etc., but the one thing we can't swap is dishwasher detergent. Nothing works like the big name in the plastic pods. When we have to rewash everything the sustainable one isn't better. We're still hopeful for something that works, but for now we're sticking with the one we know. I hate it, it makes me feel awful to use, but it doesn't undo all of our other work.

Definitely regret getting metal food containers. I bought them before realising they can’t go in the microwave. There is a size though that works perfect for a big salad for lunch I use. I still use them but it’s annoying to move the food to be heated to a plate or bowl for microwaving. Glass is better for going to work, and I put it in an insulating bag to make sure it doesn’t break. Who gives a crap = amazing! I’ve used their toilet paper for 8 years now and I’m considering pairing it with tushy bidet too

I am using soap for my hair and had to get used to it for a few weeks. But now it’s fine. I must admit I have a normal shampoo that I use sometimes too, but there are really mild options out there that you need to rinse out with apple vinegar sometimes and your hair is voluminous and shiny. You just have to commit, try a few with different “re-oiling” factors (some meant for dry and some meant for greasy hairs and scalps) and not use too much of it. But I totally understand why this is something where most people struggle with. You have to rinse the shower afterwards, because there would be much soap residue and your hair does smell like vinegar a little bit…

Shampoo bars are amazing once you find the right one. I tried a couple and then shied away from them because i didn't like them. But then eventually tried again and found some AMAZING ones that made my hair so incredible. I've been using it for a year and a half and my hair is so thick and full and beautiful and I can go so much longer before it gets gross. I'll never go back.

I am interested in what your opinion is about the future increased need for certain minerals to be mined to be used in batteries for electric vehicles. These minerals will need to be mined in order to create the more energy-efficient vehicles and take away our reliance on fossil fuels. But the trade-off will be mining the Earth's minerals.

The best food storage option for me is plastic, even if it’s not the most sustainable. It lasts forever, I’ve been using the same containers for years. They microwave, they nest for storage in my tiny kitchen, they’re easy to clean and most importantly they help me cook and take my own food to work. They do the job I need and as much as I am passionate about sustainability I know the “less” sustainable option here is the most sustainable for me. I also love my ethique shampoo, my local bar soap, my local bar moisturiser, but have to currently use bottled conditioner, as my hair is so damaged after a bad bleach experience that my bar conditioner isn’t nearly moisturising enough. I’m on the hunt for a replacement but in the meantime I’ve had to settle. I try and view it all as a balance. I’m doing my best ❤
